The Sir Christopher Wren Building
The Sir Christopher Wren Building at the College of William and Mary in Virginia is the oldest academic building in continuous use in the United States. It was constructed between 1695 and 1699, before Williamsburg was founded, when the capital of the colony of Virginia was still located at Jamestown. Tradition has it that the building was designed by the famed English architect Sir Christopher Wren who designed St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The Wren Building has been destroyed by fire three times in 1705, 1859 and 1862. Each time the structure was rebuilt, and for more than three centuries, it has been "the soul of the College." In the building, generations of William and Mary students have attended classes and lectures, enjoyed meals and attended chapel services. Classes are still held in the Wren Building, which also is home to several faculty offices.

Hotel History
Sir Christopher Wren's House was designed and built by the celebrated architect Sir Christopher Wren. He chose to set up his family home in Windsor, a town close to his heart because his father was the Dean of Windsor and, as a young boy his family lived in the Deanery within the grounds of Windsor Castle.
A luxury hotel Windsor
A rich history of the Sir Christopher Wren's luxury hotel Windsor. A historic hotel, overlooked by the ramparts of Windsor Castle. Situated in an idyllic position, on the banks of the River Thames, the house is overlooked by the ramparts of Windsor Castle to one side, and Eton Bridge and the river to the other. As with all of Wren's projects, meticulous attention to detail was applied to every part of the building process and only materials of the highest standards were used. A good example of the perfection to which the house was built is the floor to ceiling Oak panelling above the fire place in the hotel's Oak room, though over 300 years old and preceding Wren's era, is still in mint condition. Later in Wren's career, he supervised the building and completion of the magnificent Windsor Guildhall where he recreated the same magnificent plasterwork on the ground floor evident in his own house. Wren died in 1723 at the age of 91 and records show that in the years following his death, there were several private owners of his family home. There is little information available on the alterations that took place, although it is thought that in 1752 the Drawing Room was extended and the magnificent alabaster fireplace, attributed to the work of Sir Thomas Fettiplace, was fitted.

Wren Bibliography
As Surveyor of the King's Works, architect of St Paul's cathedral and President of the Royal Society, Wren left behind a bewildering quantity of drawings, letters, and documents concerning his professional activities, but he never kept a diary. Details of his childhood and personal life thus have to be patched together from other sources.
Understandably England's most famous architect has attracted his fair share of attention from architectural historians. As the list below shows, the quantity of writing on him is substantial and continues to be added to at an impressive rate. At the time that this bibliography was being first compiled in December 2000 at least three new biographies of Wren were in preparation, progress was being made on publishing revised catalogues of his drawings at the Soane Museum and All Soul's College, Oxford and a massive volume was being written on the history of St Paul's Cathedral. The following list is thus a work in progress. There are undoubtedly many omissions but I shall do my best to keep it relatively up to date. All suggestions will be gratefully received. Useful contributions will be acknowledged in the Acknowledgements and Sources section.

Sir Christopher Wren (1632 - 1723)
Although he is known as an architect and designer, Sir Christopher Wren's career did not begin with training in these disciplines. Before the age of 17 he had invented an instrument that wrote in the dark, a pneumatic engine and a new deaf and dumb language. Among his first contributions to the world was the perfection of a working barometer. His talents were extraordinarily diverse. After an education at Westminster and Wadham College, Oxford he became a Fellow of All Souls where he was distinguished in maths and physics. At Wadham he experimented with opium as an anaesthetic enabling doctors to perform prolonged surgery. Then in 1662 Wren joined other mathematicians, scientists and scholars to form the Royal Society of London for Promoting Natural Knowledge. Born to the Dean of Windsor, he led a privileged early life playing with the young Prince Charles in Windsor Castle. His predilection for learning and science was evident at an early age, but his interest in architecture was equally strong and may have been inspired by a book which he read as a boy, entitled
