William White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk 1883
SCULTHORPE is a large scattered village and parish, 2 miles N.W. of Fakenham, in the western division of the county, Gallow hundred and petty sessional division, Walsingham union and county court district, Norwich bankruptcy district, Fakenham polling district of West Norfolk, Burnham rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. It had 574 inhabitants in 1881, living on 2055 acres, and has a rateable value of £3779. The parish for the most part belongs to Sir Willoughby Jones, Bart., lord of the manor, who resides at Cranmer Hall, a large red-brick mansion in a well-wooded park. Lord Hastings, J.S. Scott Chad, Esq., and others, own land here. The CHURCH (St. Mary and All Saints) was built by St. Robert Knollys in the reign of Edward III., and has a remarkably well-proportioned tower of a still earlier date. The chancel, which had long been in ruins, was rebuilt in 1847 by the lord of the manor, as a memorial of his brother, the late Sir Laurence Jones, Bart., who was murdered by brigands in Turkey, in 1845, and whose remains were buried beneath it. The rest of the church was restored and enlarged and rebuilt in 1861 at the joint expense of the lord of the manor and the rector. It contains a very fine font of the Early-Norman period, several ancient brasses, and some beautiful stained glass. The rectory, valued in the King's Book at £16, is in the patronage of Sir Willoughby Jones, Bart., and incumbency of the Rev. Herbert Walsingham Jones, M.A., J.P., Hon. Canon of Norwich Cathedral, who has a good residence, 71A. 21P. of glebe, and a yearly tithe rent-charge of £550, awarded in 1831.

Robert Woodhouse "For, there is little doubt, that the student's curiosity and attention will be more excited and sustained, when he finds history blended with science, and the demonstration of formulae accompanied with the object and causes of their invention, than by a mere analytical exposition of the principles of the subject." Robert Woodhouse Robert Woodhouse (1773-1827) was the eighth occupant of the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics at Cambridge University. A mathematician by profession, he was considered to be a reformer. He was one of the first to introduce to England and Cambridge the methods of calculus developed on the Continent and the notation devised by Leibniz. He was senior wrangler at Caius College, Cambridge when he was awarded his BA in 1795 and was the winner of the Smith's Prize. His M.A. was awarded in 1798 and he was elected a fellow that same year. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1802. At Cambridge, he was elected to the Lucasian professorship in 1820, but held the chair for only two years. He took the Plumian Chair of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge, in 1822, which he held for five years until his death in 1827. Woodhouse was the first superintendent of the Cambridge astronomical library. He was a moderator for the Senate House mathematics examinations for the years 1803, 1804, 1807 and 1808. He used the standard Cambridge notation in devising calculus problems for the examinations despite his personal preferences for the continental style.

Biography Robert Woodhouse was born at Norwich on April 28, 1773; was educated at Caius College, Cambridge, of which society he was subsequently a fellow; was Plumian professor in the university; and continued to live at Cambridge till his death on December 23, 1827.
Woodhouse's earliest work, entitled the Principles of Analytical Calculation, was published at Cambridge in 1803. In this he explained the differential notation and strongly pressed the employment of it; but he severely criticized the methods used by continental writers, and their constant assumption of non-evident principles. This was followed in 1809 by a trigonometry (plane and spherical), and in 1810 by a historical treatise on the calculus of variations and isoperimetrical problems. He next produced an astronomy; of which the first book (usually bound in two volumes), on practical and descriptive astronomy, was issued in 1812, and the second book, containing an account of the treatment of physical astronomy by Laplace and other continental writers, was issued in 1818. All these works deal critically with the scientific foundation of the subjects considered - a point which is not infrequently neglected in modern textbooks.
A man like Woodhouse, of scrupulous honour, universally respected, a trained logician, and with a caustic wit, was well fitted to introduce a new system; and the fact that when he first called attention to the continental analysis he exposed the unsoundness of some of the usual methods of establishing it, more like an opponent than a partisan, was as politic as it was honest. Woodhouse did not exercise much influence on the majority of his contemporaries, and the movement might have died away for the time being if it had not been for the advocacy of Peacock, Babbage, and Herschel, who formed an Analytical Society, with the object of advocating the general use in the university of analytical methods and of the differential notation.

Robert Woodhouse 's father was a draper, who was also called Robert Woodhouse, and his mother was Judith Alderson, the daughter of a Unitarian minister from Lowestoft. As well as Robert junior, the subject of this biography, Judith and Robert Woodhouse had a younger son John Thomas Woodhouse who was born in 1780. Robert junior attended grammar school in North Walsham. On 20 May 1790 he was admitted to Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated as Senior Wrangler (ranked first among the First Class students) and first Smith's prizeman in 1795. He became a fellow of Caius College in 1798, as did his younger brother a few years later, and held the fellowship until 1823. Woodhouse was made a fellow of the Royal Society on 16 December 1802. He was appointed Lucasian professor of mathematics in 1820 but this chair provided such a small income that he was happy to resign in 1822 so that he might accept the better paid position as Plumian professor of astronomy and experimental philosophy. He also became the first director of the Cambridge University observatory which had just been newly built. He held this latter professorship, and was head of the Observatory, until his death in 1827. Fellows of a Cambridge College were not allowed to be married so Woodhouse had to resign his fellowship in order that he might marry Harriet Wilken on 20 February 1823. In fact Woodhouse would have married sooner but his income was, until he became Plumian professor, insufficient to support a wife. Harriet, who came from Norwich, was the daughter of an architect. Her brother William Wilkens was even better known as an architect than was their father. Robert and Harriot had one son.
