MUSIC (Guitar):
Andres Segovia [1893-1987], from Spain, was the most famous guitarist of all time. He brought the classical guitar from its folk- and dance-related image to the symphonies and concert halls of the most established musical prominence. He developed an approach to plucking the guitar strings with the fingernails of the right hand, which became the dominat school of guitar, displacing the gentler and more lyrical Neapolitan school which used the fingertips. Christopher Parkening is arguably the greatest American performer of Classical Guitar. After a year of intensive Classical Guitar at Brookdale Community College, under Christopher Parkening's master student Barry Eisner, I was able to play a few baroque pieces and original compositions at community college concerts, and then retired to the occasional original song at Woodstock, various parties and resorts, and while hitchiking across America, singing for my supper. The Pentagon's Dynamic Duo: Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz
By Richard H. Curtiss
Richard Perle…
Richard Perle is perhaps the best-known member of the group roughly known as the Washington neocons—neoconservatives who advocate a hard-line foreign policy aimed at complete U.S. control of key regions of the world. Chairman of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board, Perle also is, in the words of foreign affairs analyst Holger Jensen, “an ardent Zionist, a personal friend of [Israeli Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon, head of Hollinger Digital, part of the group that publishes the Daily Telegraph in London, a board member of the Jerusalem Post , resident ‘fellow’ of the American Enterprise Institute and ex-employee of the Israeli weapons manufacturer Soltam.” In the 1960s, Perle was a protégé of nuclear arms strategist Albert Wohlstetter of the RAND corporation. Although he has spent much of his life in the arms industry, Perle never served in the U.S. armed forces, perhaps because he was a student, and then married, at the time of the Vietnam War.

Wolfowitz Urges Extra Aid After Trip To Africa
Paul Wolfowitz , the new head of the World Bank , said yesterday he was returning from a week-long trip to Africa to urge the Bush administration to help fund a big aid push for the continent, saying he regarded it as being on the move and full of real partners with whom the west could work, reports The Guardian (UK, 06/20).
Wolfowitz said he would prepare proposals for the Gleneagles summit of the G8 and described the British government's support for Africa as "almost a gift from heaven." He said: "I have seen more reasons for Africa to become a continent of hope," adding that he had been struck by the "can do" mentality of its leaders and people. Wolfowitz 's proposals include using extra aid to combat problems identified on his visit, such as malaria, poor infrastructure, inadequate lending for small and medium-sized businesses, and better cross-border cooperation.

Paul Wolfowitz: The Talkative American?
Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz exerts a powerful reality distortion field, as evidenced by the very nearly sycophantic rendering of the National Journal's James Kitfield, one of several veteran Washington journalists who accompanied the Great Man on his recent trip to Iraq. The trip memorably featured a rocket artillery attack on Baghdad's al-Rashid Hotel early on the morning of Oct. 26. (According to his roommate at the al-Rashid, Stephen Hayes of the Weekly Standard, Kitfield was in the shower when all hell broke loose.) Kitfield's own account moves quickly past that morning's blood and fire to illuminate the glow that he perceives, seemingly against his own better judgment, emanating from Wolfowitz's glamorous idealism and unshakeable optimism. A highly condensed version: Probably no Western functionary has so captured the imagination of Arabs since British intelligence officer T.E. Lawrence joined the forces under Faisal al Hussein in 1916 and became "Lawrence of Arabia." In the minds of many Iraqi sheiks and governing officials, and the international press, Wolfowitz is the man most readily associated with the United States' drive to oust the regime of dictator Saddam Hussein and set Iraq on the largely uncharted path to democracy... "When you first arrived in Iraq, we thought you wore the ring of Solomon!" laughed Sheik Ali Khalid Al Iman, welcoming Wolfowitz to a roundtable discussion with local Kurdish, Arab, and Turkmen religious leaders in Kirkuk, held in the shade of a long pavilion. "Now we see from your behavior and politeness toward Islam that you may even be one of us, because you come hoping to try and help us solve our problems. And as you can see at this table, we are of three ethnic groups, and two strands of Islam, Sunni and Shiite, and there are no problems among us."

I was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 23, 1924, the oldest of three children. My parents were themselves the children of immigrants. They had to earn a living as soon as they finished secondary school. So my sisters, my cousins and I were the first generation of our family to attend a university. I was educated, and well educated, in the neighborhood public schools of New York City. I was good at school from the very beginning, but not very intellectual until my last year in high school. Then one of those teachers who make a difference taught me to read the great 19th century French and Russian novelists, and to take ideas seriously. I won a scholarship to Harvard College and arrived there in September 1940.
Like many children of the Depression, I was curious about what made society tick. My first studies were in sociology (with Talcott Parsons) and anthropology (with Clyde Kluckhohn) as well as elementary economics. By the end of 1942, when I had turned 18, it seemed that there were more urgent and exciting matters than what I was doing, so I left the university and joined the U.S. Army. I served briefly in North Africa and Sicily, and then from the beginning to the end of the war in Italy, until I was discharged in August 1945.
I think that those three years as a soldier formed my character. I found myself part of a tight-knit group, doing a hard job with skill and mutual loyalty, led by one of the most remarkable men I have ever known, who never wavered from the path of humor and decency. Twice again I have had similar experiences: in Walter Heller's Council of Economic Advisers (along with

Wolfowitz and the World Bank By Rick Smith
Bush's recent nomination of Deputy Secretary of Defense, Paul Wolfowitz to head the World Bank has proven to be a controversial decision. Perceived as the architect of the unpopular invasion of Iraq and one of the more militant of the White House neo-cons, worldwide distrust comes as no surprise. This raises the puzzling question, why would Wolfowitz be leaving the Pentagon now?
The BBC's Greg Palast revealed last week that an investigation conducted by BBC's Newsnight and Harper's magazine has uncovered a 323-page document from the U.S. State Department via the Freedom of Information act describing conflicting plans for Iraqi oil. One faction, representatives of the U.S. oil industry, or `Big Oil,' favor a new state-owned oil company in Iraq, while the neo-cons, including Wolfowitz, drafted a plan to privatize and then auction off the resources to corporations.
Former CEO of Shell Oil USA, Philip Carroll, was appointed to take control of Iraq's oil production for the U.S. government and was able to stall the neo-con scheme by making it clear to U.S. occupation chief Paul Bremer that there would be no privatization of Iraqi oil while he was in charge.
The Pentagon neo-con policy supported privatization of Iraqi oil as a means to undermine OPEC by flooding the market with cheap oil in a move that could be considered economic imperialism. According to Palast's report, Iraqi-born oil industry consultant, Falah Aljibury, says he took part in secret meetings in California, Washington and the Middle East, to formulate a forced coup d'etat long before September 11

Wolfowitz is currently United States Deputy Secretary of Defense and second in charge of the defense department, under the US Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld. On February 5, 2001, president Bush announced his intention to nominate Dr. Paul Wolfowitz to be Deputy Secretary of Defense. He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on Feb. 28th and sworn in March 2, 2001 as the 28th Deputy Secretary of Defense. This is Dr. Wolfowitz's third tour of duty in the Pentagon.

He has written widely on the subject of national strategy and foreign policy and was a member of the advisory boards of the journals Foreign Affairs and National Interest.
For the last seven years, Dr. Wolfowitz has served as Dean and Professor of International Relations at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of The Johns Hopkins University. SAIS is widely regarded as one of the world's leading graduate schools of international relations with 750 students, studying on campuses in Washington, D.C.; Nanjing, China; and Bologna, Italy. As Dean, he led a successful capital campaign that raised more than $75 million and doubled the school's endowment. Also under his leadership, the curriculum and facilities were modernized and new faculty and programs were added to shift the school's focus from the Cold War to the era of globalization.
