Early Life
Johann Rudolf Wolf was born the 7th of July, 1816, in Flanden, Switzerland. Rudolf attended the University of Zurich where he studied Mathematics under Raabe. He continued his studies in Vienna and Berlin under the tutelage of men such as Encke, Crelle, Dirichlet, Poggendorf, and Steiner. In 1839 he became a teacher of mathematics and physics at the University of Bern. He also became a professor of astronomy there in 1844. Scientific Accomplishments Wolf wrote a lot about his various theories. He wrote about his prime number theory and his theories on geometry as well as those on probability and statistics. His main contribution to science however was in relation to Sun research. Connection to Sun Research Wolf's connection to Sun research is a very important one, as he was the scientist who discovered the 11 year sunspot cycle and its connection with the geomagnetic activity of Earth. In 1849 he created a system known as Wolf's sunspot numbers. This system is still in use today for studying solar activity by counting sunspots and sunspot groups.

Halieis 1974 Part 1: We came, we saw, we dug!
Preface: My wife Judy and I were part of the Halieis Excavation team in the summer of 1974. I kept a diary during that entire summer. In it I occasionally recorded some interesting observations along with a lot of mundane ramblings on how I spent my day in the trenches or working on the finds. Re-reading it, however, has brought back a flood of memories, so I have fleshed out the diary data with other memories in an effort to tell what it was like to be part of the excavation that summer. In this first part, I look closely at the first two weeks of the season, with all their excitement and novelty. My wife Judy and I had spent the summer of 1973 in Nauplion with Wolf Rudolph, Jeff and D'Arcy Danielson, Don and Ingrid Keller, and others, examining and cataloging finds from previous excavation years at Halieis. Jeff, Don, and I had even visited the Necropolis of Halieis once with Wolf during that summer. But my wife and I had never been on a real excavation before, so we looked forward to the summer of 1974 when the Indiana University team would be excavating at Halieis. On Wednesday, after a leisurely morning and early afternoon at Hotel Rozos, about 3:15 p.m. we all took a trip over to the site of Halieis, where we examined Field 10, the Acropolis, and the Necropolis. Afterward we relaxed at our hotel before going into Porto Cheli for the evening. Most of the group gathered at the Bonsoir Snack Bar. I remember the stars being very bright at night on the hotel side of the bay. We came to enjoy the daily walk into town and back to the hotel.

Of Skeletons and Stale Bread
I dug at Halieis for one season only, 1970, which was Wolf Rudolph’s first season as director of the excavations. Mike Jameson was on hand for the season, too. For most of the summer my trenches were in the East Tower area, where the finds included a number of late period burials and the remains of classical houses. My favorite skeleton was "Smiley," whose jaw was unhinged into an unusually exuberant grin and in whose midriff, just above the lower rib, was a bronze key. How did the key get there? Did Smiley swallow it to keep greedy relatives from getting into his/her lockbox? Did someone leave it, purposely or inadvertently, in Smiley’s pocket when he/she was buried? My least favorite skeletons were a pair of children, buried one atop the other just outside the city wall. Delicate, friable bones that crumbled as we tried to separate them from the dirt. Very frustrating work. And who likes to deal with dead babies, anyway? We eventually removed the burials en bloc and took them back to the dig house. I don’t know where they finally ended up. In addition to working around the East Tower, I also excavated briefly on a small hilltop, probably a sanctuary, called Koukouras. It was a beautiful location, isolated, with spectacular views to Spetsai across the water. The dirt road to the site was steep and poorly graded. Even with a running start, it usually took two or more tries for our dig van to make it to the top. In addition to collecting surface pottery and numbering and drawing the conglomerate blocks that had been piled around some pine trees at the crest of the hill, we dug a few shallow, featureless trenches.
