Life
Print Preview of Section Born in Vienna on April 26, 1889, Wittgenstein was raised in a wealthy and cultured family. After attending schools in Linz and Berlin, he went to England to study engineering at the University of Manchester. His interest in pure mathematics led him to Trinity College, University of Cambridge, to study with Bertrand Russell. There he turned his attention to philosophy. By 1918 Wittgenstein had completed his Tractatus Logico-philosophicus (1921; trans. 1922), a work he then believed provided the “final solution” to philosophical problems. Subsequently, he turned from philosophy and for several years taught elementary school in an Austrian village. In 1929 he returned to Cambridge to resume his work in philosophy and was appointed to the faculty of Trinity College. Soon he began to reject certain conclusions of the

(3 Cauac (Rain) / 7 Ch'en (Black) - 159/260 - 12.19.10.10.19) Wittgenstein, Ludwig
Austrian-born British philosopher noted for his analyses of language and meaning. Among his writings are Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921) and Philosophical Investigations (1953). Wittgenstein, Ludwig Josef Johan Wittgenstein, Ludwig Josef Johan, 1889-1951, Austrian philosopher. He studied (1912-13) at Cambridge Univ. under Bertrand RUSSELL . In Vienna in the 1920s he came in contact with adherents of LOGICAL POSITIVISM; they were profoundly influenced by his first major work, the Tractatus Logico-philosophicus (1921), which posits a close, formal relationship between language, thought, and the world. Language and thought work literally like a picture of the real world, and to understand any sentence one must grasp the reference of its constituents, both to each other and to the real . Language, however, can indicate an area beyond itself; unsayable things (e.g., things not demonstrable) do exist, and sentences whose structure of meaning amounts to nonsense can result in philosophical insight. Thus Wittgenstein, unlike the logical positivists, allowed for the possibility of a

Certainty

It is a dogma of the Roman Church that the existence of God can be proved by natural reason. Now this dogma would make it impossible for me to be a Roman Catholic. If I thought of God as another being like myself, outside myself, only infinitely more powerful, then I would regard it as my duty to defy him.
Wittgenstein, Ludwig
Catholicism

A philosopher who is not taking part in discussions is like a boxer who never goes into the ring. Wittgenstein, Ludwig Debate Death is not an event in life: we do not live to experience death. If we take eternity to mean not infinite temporal duration but timelessness, then eternal life belongs to those who live in the present. Wittgenstein, Ludwig Death and Dying The human body is the best picture of the human soul. Wittgenstein, Ludwig Health Like everything metaphysical the harmony between thought and reality is to be found in the grammar of the language.

Widgery, David (1947-1992) David Widgery was a loyal but extremely heterodox member of the British IS and then the SWP from the late 1960s until his tragic early death in 1992. He had a wide range of interests and activities. From his youth a cultural radical he wrote not only for the revolutionary press but also for the underground press of the late 1960s, editing one issue of the famous underground magazine OZ as well as writing regularly for Socialist Worker and International Socialism British Medical Journal (about as Establishment as you can get) via New Statesman and New Society Time Out and City Limits to Socialist Worker Freindz and INK . Among his other works are a number of heavyweight analyses of the politics of health and particularly of the National Health Service in Britain, numerous short pieces on culture and descriptive writing of aspects of working class life that have rarely been captured so brilliantly. He was one of the finest left writers in Britain ever. See the David Widgery Archive Wijnkoop, David (1876-1941)
