THE NEW LEFT RHETORIC OF AMBIVALENCE edward witten Mr and elsewhereattempts to provide collective alternatives in the absence of personal ones.

Rhetoric of Ambivalence From The Nation - America's Longest Running Weekly Magazine. Rhetoric of Ambivalence by Witten, Edward Open the article in The Nation Digital Archive Abstract: The American Left suffers from a curious ambivalence. The young radicals face a poverty both of personal and of political alternatives. They have met personal questions such as the draft and career selection by attempting to transform individual into collective decisions. Thus the rhetoric of "resistance" and "confronting the war makers" undertakes to transform draft resistance from an act of personal morality to a collective strategy. The rhetoric also lacks political content. Failing to create the possibility of even potentially effective collective action, it leaves the radical trapped between personal defiance and jail, or personal acquiescence and betrayal. Selections from Full Text: ...parents, of the public school systems... ...Because the radicals are largely limited to the campus, they have also been unable to create serious alternatives to the established forms of political action... ...Such loose comparisons as these, however, do not form the kernel of an analysis of domestic imperialism that could provide a program of political action toward liberation...

Schedule Duality, Spacetime and Quantum Mechanics Edward Witten, Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) In the last few years, physicists have learned that the different string theories discovered and studied in different ways are limiting cases of a single, more powerful theory, known as M theory. "M" stands for magic, mystery, or matrix, according to taste. Some of these developments will be explained in this lecture.
Edward Witten, professor of physics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., is arguably the premier theoretical physicist of our time. Renowned for his many contributions to particle physics and string theory, Witten has almost single-handedly constructed a new branch of mathematical physics For his achievements, he has been awarded mathematics' highest prize, the 1990 Fields Medal. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, he is a recipient of a MacArthur Prize, the Dirac Medal, and many other honors.

Edward Witten
Other highlights of Witten's work include his proof of the positivity of energy in classical relativity, his interpretation of unusual symmetries in physics, including mirror symmetry and SL(2,Z) invariance, his proposals leading to the discovery of new rigidity theorems, and his picture of invariants in low dimensional topology and geometry, including the discovery of the Seiberg-Witten equations and their relation to geometry. The early contributions of Witten are summarized in: Michael Atiyah, On the work of Edward Witten, Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians, Kyoto, 1990 I (Tokyo, 1991), 31-35 L D Faddeev, On the work of Edward Witten, Addresses on the works of Fields medalists and Rolf Nevanlinna Prize winner (Tokyo, 1990). Edward Witten, the Charles Simonyi Professor of Mathematical Physics in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study, is one of the world's leading theoretical physicists. Professor Witten is one of the principal authors of string theory, the framework with which physicists have sought to unify quantum mechanics with gravity. String theorists propose that tiny, high-dimensional strings, closed into loops, vibrate to produce the various components of matter. The mathematics describing these strings, many physicists believe, may one day prove to be the key to one of the main puzzles of physics: the relationship of gravity to other known natural forces. In recent years, by means of mysterious new "duality" symmetries, physicists have obtained a much more far-reaching understanding of string theory that has many implications.
Much of Dr. Witten's early work was involved in application of the Standard Model of particle physics. He is the author of many influential papers on quantum chromodynamics, which explains the strong force that binds atomic nuclei together. He has worked increasingly in the area of more speculative unification theories, and has been working on superstring theory since 1984.

"He shows the direction for the rest of us," stated Institute physicist Nathan Seiberg, who collaborated with Witten on a series of groundbreaking papers. "His main strength is that he's powerful in everything. Both in math the most sophisticated math and physics … he has remarkable physics intuition as well as complete control over the math that is needed. And, in that respect, I think he's unique."
