Witt, Johan de
Born: Sept. 24, 1625, Dordrecht, Neth.
Died: Aug. 20, 1672, The Hague One of the foremost European statesmen of the 17th century who as councillor pensionary (the political leader) of Holland (1653-72) guided the United Provinces in the First and Second Anglo-Dutch wars (1652-54, 1665-67) and consolidated the nation's naval and commercial power. De Witt was a member of one of the old burgher-regent families of his native town of Dordrecht (Dort). His father, Jacob, was six times burgomaster and for many years sat for the town in the States of Holland. He was a strenuous adherent of the republican or oligarchical states-right party in opposition to the princes of the House of Orange, who represented the federal principle and had the support of the masses of the people. De Witt was educated at Leiden and early displayed remarkable talents, especially in mathematics and jurisprudence. His Elementa curvarum linearum (written before 1650, but published 1659-61) was one of the first textbooks in analytic geometry. (He later also applied his mathematical knowledge to the financial and budgetary problems of the republic.) In 1645 he and his elder brother Cornelius visited France, Italy, Switzerland, and England, and on his return he lived at The Hague as an advocate. In 1650 he was appointed pensionary of Dordrecht, which made him the leader of the town's deputation in the States of Holland. In this year the States of Holland found themselves engaged in a struggle for provincial supremacy, on the question of the disbanding of troops. The youthful prince of Orange, William II, with the support of the States General and the army, seized five of the leaders of the states-right party and imprisoned them in Loevestein Castle; among these was Jacob de Witt. The sudden death of William, at the moment when he had crushed opposition, led to a reaction. He left only a posthumous child, afterwards William III of Orange; the principles advocated by Jacob de Witt triumphed, and the authority of the States became predominant in the republic.

    Johan de Witt, raadpensionaris van de Staten-Generaal, een korte biografie
    * Dordrecht, 1625
    Johan de Witt gold jarenlang als het gezicht van de Republiek op het gebied van de buitenlandse politiek. De Witt onderhield contacten met alle grote buitenlandse vorsten en mogendheden. Binnenslands was deze geniale politicus de grote man achter de schermen, die op veel gebieden grote invloed had. Als pensionaris van de Staten van Holland en raadpensionaris van de Staten-Generaal stond hij in feite, maar nooit formeel, aan het hoofd van de Republiek. De dood van De Witt was tevens het einde van het Eerste Stadhouderloze tijdperk. Prins Willem III trad in 1672 als Stadhouder aan. De Oranjes bleven vooralsnog aan de macht tot 1795. Literatuur

    Executive summary: Leader of Holland, 1653–72 At this time of constitutional crisis such were the eloquence, sagacity and business talents exhibited by the youthful pensionary of Dort that on the 23rd of July 1653 he was appointed to the office of grand pensionary ( Raadpensionaris ) of Holland at the age of twenty-eight. He was reelected in 1658, 1663 and 1668, and held office until his death in 1672. During this period of nineteen years the general conduct of public affairs and administration, and especially of foreign affairs, such was the confidence inspired by his talents and industry, was largely placed in his hands. He found in 1653 his country brought to the brink of ruin through the war with England, which had been caused by the keen commercial rivalry of the two maritime states. The Dutch were unprepared, and suffered severely through the loss of their carrying trade, and De Witt resolved to bring about peace as soon as possible. The first demands of Oliver Cromwell were impossible, for they aimed at the absorption of the two republics into a single state, but at last in the autumn of 1654 peace was concluded, by which the Dutch made large concessions and agreed to the striking of the flag to English ships in the narrow seas. The treaty included a secret article, which the states-general refused to entertain, but which De Witt succeeded in inducing the states of Holland to accept, by which the provinces of Holland pledged themselves not to elect a stadtholder or a captain-general of the union. This Act of Seclusion, as it was called, was aimed at the young prince of Orange, whose close relationship to the Stuarts made him an object of suspicion to the Protector. De Witt was personally favorable to this exclusion of William III from his ancestral dignities, but there is no truth in the suggestion that he prompted the action of Cromwell in this matter.

Like his father, Jacob de Witt, burgomaster of Dort, he became a leading opponent of the house of Orange and played a vital role in the three successive Dutch Wars . As leader of the republican party, he was elected (1653) grand pensionary, thus acquiring control of state affairs. He represented the mercantile interests and accordingly encouraged industry and commerce. He ended the disastrous war with England (first of the Dutch Wars) in 1654, but the Restoration in England was considered a danger to Dutch maritime and political freedom and led to the renewal of the war in 1665. The favorable (to the Dutch) terms of the Treaty of Breda (1667) were largely due to Jan de Witt. In order to end the power of the house of Orange he secured passage of the Eternal Edict, which abolished the office of stadt-holder. He helped form the Triple Alliance of 1668 against Louis XIV, thus ending the War of Devolution; the Treaty of

    Giacomo Girolamo Casanova, chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798), was an Italian adventurer. At the end of his life, he wrote a highly entertaining autobiography that became famous because of the almost endless list of his erotic conquests. This, however, is only a part of this book, which is in the first place a vivid encounter of daily life in the eighteenth century Europe. Occasionally, Casanova was on a secret mission, for example to Calais, in Holland, and for the Venetian authorities. De Ruyter, Michiel
    Dutch admiral (1607-1676), first to organize a professional navy, and generally regarded as one of the greatest geniuses of naval warfare. Until then, naval engagements had been a despised type of war, fought by desperados in upgraded trading vessels; after De Ruyter, it was an honorable profession. He was active in three wars against the English, but on as many occasions, he fought together with them against the Berber pirates in the western Mediterranean. He was killed in action near Syracuse by the French. De Witt, Johan

    The translation from Dutch is as follows :
    Are there still descendants of *Raadspensionaris Johann de Witt? Are the two de Witts in Paris (both married to a daughter of French minister Guizot) descendants of the great Dutch statesman or better descendants of the regent family from Dordrecht?
    DE WITT (Dordrecht)
    Already in the 13th and 14th century we can find members of this family on the list of burgomasters and other regents of Dordrecht. They called themselves "die Witte" or "de Witte" or de Witt" and the spelling changes several times until most of them accepted "de Witt" as a final version. Most of them, because even during the life of Raadspensionaris* (see note at bottom) de Witt, two of his cousins were calling themselves Johan de Wit and Gijsbert de With.
    The family always remained in Dordrecht, and was always respected a lot and supplied a lot of government personnel. One of them was born on 7th February 1519, Jacob de Witt.
