Bill Venables provided an S-Plus function to generate random Wishart
variates in response to one of my previous questions. I will include the
function at the end of this message.
Suppose V is a covariance matrix on which you want an inverse Wishart
following parameters: degrees of freedom = d, covariance matrix = inverse
of (d*R). So, just generate V-inverse and invert to obtain samples from an
inverse Wishart distribution. In the code below, you would set "df" to d
and "SqrtSigma" to chol(solve(d*R)), the Cholesky decomposition of the
inverse of d*R, and invert the result.
Now, here is Bill Venables code, along with his commentary: "The following code should generate a single p x p Wishart matrix realisation with df degrees of freedom. If SqrtSigma is not

Earlier I asked if there is any code available to generate realizations
from a Wishart distribution. Thanks to Bill Venables, Erin Hodgess and
Coen Bernaards for help. Following is a summary of approaches:
The most straightforward reference I found was pp. 203-204 of Mark E.

Knox, John (1514 to 1572)
John Knox organised the Calvinistic reformation in Scotland. He was born in Giffordgate in 1514. He died in Edinburgh 24. November 1572.
After visiting Latin school Haddington John Knox studied theology and law at the University of Glasgow. 1536 he was ordinated as priest. 1540 he worked as notary in Haddington, later as a teacher of the household of some earls. Knox turned to the reformation influenced by the preachers Thomas Gwilliam and George Wishart. He had close contact to Wishart until he died as martyr in 1546. When it came to an uprise in St. Andrews after Wishart was burned at the stakes the Protestants of the town called John Know as their minister.
French troops defeated the uprise in July 1547 and took John Knox to the galley. After his release the British government under Edward VI. (1547-1553) gave him a preaching job in Berwick upon Tweed, close to the Scottish border, and in 1551 in Newcastle. He rejected to become Bishop of Rochester, because he rejected the Episcopal constitution and the Catholic behaviour of the Anglican Church.

The transcript of the book used as our Main Source for the Pitarrow branch reports the notice given to an earlier book, "Life of George Wishart" by Charles Rogers, which states that Guiscard or Wiscard was "a Norman epithet used to designate an adroit or cunning person" and was conferred on Robert Guiscard, son of Tancred de Hauteville who became Duke of Calabria, founded the Kingdom of Sicily, and died 27.07.1085. Some of his descendants adopted Guiscard as their family name. There were Wychards (spelt variously) in several English counties in the early 13th century. Submitted May 1997 [This information came from several sources. A typewritten copy of a mss. by Mr. B. Wishart of So. Minneapolis, MN, whose record ends in 1902; Crumrine's History of Washington Co. PA, 1884; The History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties, 1884; family records, and my own researches.] Dr. John Wishart and Dr. James Wishart who practiced in Washington Co PA in the early 1800s were sons of Dr. David Wishart of Perthshire in Scotland and Bedford Co. PA. It is possible that James Wishart, a charter member of Chartiers Presbyterian Church in Washington Co (1798) was their uncle. The two brothers were born in Scotland and came to the U.S. in 1796 with their parents and other brothers and sisters. They sailed from Greenock, Scotland, on 1 July 1796 and "after a tedious and dangerous voyage, being shipwrecked off Little Egg Harbor," they landed at New York on 8 September. Dr. David Wishart bought land on Yellow Creek in Bedford Co. and lived there for the rest of his life. He was born on 9 August 1752 in Kincardine, Perthshire, and died after 1830 in PA. His wife was Janet Belches (18 May 1762- d. after 1806), dau of James and Catherine Waterman Belches. David and Janet had thirteen children, two of whom died in infancy. Dr. John Wishart, their oldest son (24 March 1781-19 June 1864) was b. in Perthshire, grew up in Bedford co., worked on the family farm and studied medicine with his father. "In 1806 he entered the University of Philadelphia, and after a full course graduated in the spring of 1808. He married Mary, a daughter of Robert Tate, Esq., and removed to Washington, and opened an office October 3rd of that year, 'at the house of Mrs. Dodd, nearly opposite the courthouse,' now (1884) the site of Hasting's hardware store and the Washington Savings-Bank." Crumrine.
