Developing a Student Project in Abstract Algebra: The Lights Out Problem
John Wilson
Centre College
wilson@centre.edu
Abstract of article : This article describes the development, solution, and results of a group project assigned during the second course of the abstract algebra sequence at Centre College. The Lights Out puzzle consists of 25 lights arranged in a square. When a light is touched, that light and each of the adjacent lights is toggled on or off. The students in this project were asked to develop a mathematical model for the puzzle and to determine how to turn off all of the lights starting with any given set of lights turned on. Several tips are given for faculty members who want to incorporate student projects into their courses. About the author : John Wilson thoroughly enjoys explaining mathematics to people of any age. He has tutored or taught mathematics every year since he was in the seventh grade. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of the South he earned his MS and Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina. He has taught at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky since 1985. He married his high school sweetheart and they have two children. He enjoys playing games and solving puzzles of all types but receives a special pleasure when they lead him to an interesting mathematical question.

127. JOHN HENRY WILSON
According to family records, john Henry wilson was born in Defiance, wilson, john J roomer MW 50 Div Md at 25 OH OH OH SuperintendentMedical College.
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~sabthomp/wilson/WilsonJohnH.htm
JOHN HENRY WILSON September 03, 1878 to June 03, 1960 According to family records, John Henry Wilson was born in Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio. However, more than likely they were in Hancock County, Ohio near Findlay, Ohio where his mother's family lived. There are discrepancies on his birth year as well as the day in September that he was born. For many years, the records showed that he was born in 1879. And since he decided to stop aging when he reached the age of 39, few people knew his real age. His death certificate (transcribed below) says he was born September 3, 1879. The family bible pages written in the early 1900's say he was born September 9, 1879. After accumulating the early census etc, I have changed the birth year to 1878 but have left the day in September as the 3rd rather than the 9th. John was the second son of Joshua Wilson and Adaline Eckert . He had an older brother, Clarence , and an adopted/foster sister by the name of Jennibell Tennant . John was good in school and attended Nebraska Normal College where he obtained three college degrees by 1903. EDUCATION John graduated in the class of 1901 from Nebraska Normal College at Wayne, Nebraska, with a degree in teaching. He continued his education and received a Scientific Degree in 1902 and a Business Degree in 1903.

„Musician in Ordinary". Er starb im Alter von 79 Jahren und hinterließ viele eigene Lieder sowie mehrere berühmte Liedersammlungen. Karadar Bertoldi Ensemble Studio Informatico Anesin
