Frustrated and penniless, in 1794 he emigrated to the United States and established himself in Philadelphia. Inspired by the vast unsettled frontier, Wilson's interests turned to the scientific study of birds. The first comprehensive work published on the subject, his American Ornithology added 39 new species to those previously known and earned him the title Father of American Ornithology. Far more accurate and painterly than anyone who preceded him, his engravings and descriptions were well recognized in his lifetime. Thomas Jefferson, an early subscriber, was among his supporters. Wilson never recovered from his last exhausting river crossing in pursuit of an elusive specimen. He died at age 47, one volume short of completing American Ornithology. Comprised of seventy-six hand-colored engravings, American Ornithology depicts 262 species of birds. We offer a complete selection of Wilson's work. All plates are in excellent condition. These museum-quality hand-colored engravings remain very affordable. In fact, we feel that Wilson's work is undervalued and represents an excellent opportunity for the collector of early-American natural history art.

No. 1935:
WILSON, BEFORE AUDUBON by John H. Lienhard Click here for audio of Episode 1935. Today, an unlikely ornithologist. The University of Houston's college of engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. A merica's first great ornithologist was not James Audubon, but Alexander Wilson. And he was born, not in America, but in Scotland, in 1766. His father was a reformed smuggler, who worked as a merchant when Alexander was young, and then went back to smuggling. As a late teenager, Wilson became a peddler and a would-be poet. Robert Burns was, by then, the rock star of Scottish poetry, and Wilson wanted to be the next Burns. He published his first book of poetry when he was 24 and, though he appears to've had the poetic voice, he did not yet have Burns' imagination. To do what Burns had done, you had to do more than just sound like him.

96. Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology
Antique prints of birds from alexander wilson s first American ornithology.
http://www.philaprintshop.com/wilson.html
The First American Ornithology
First edition Supplement Second edition
First Edition:
Prints by Alexander Wilson. From American Ornithology Philadelphia: Bradford and Inskeep, 1808-14. Folio. Engravings. Original hand-coloring. Full, but narrow margins as issued. Alexander Wilson is known as “the father of American ornithology.” He earned this title both because of his American Ornithology the first natural history just on American birds, which was first issued from 1808 to 1814 and so predated Audubon by about two decadesand because he was the first American citizen to become a full-time scientist in this field. Wilson, a Scottish immigrant, drew most of the birds for his ornithology himself; the engraving was mostly by Alexander Lawson and John G. Warnicke. Wilson worked with a small budget and so had to crowd as many specimens as he could onto one plate for the series. This led to the characteristic appearance of many of his prints, with several birds, juxtaposed in different combinations, filling the page right up to the plate mark. Although he fell far short of his goal of depicting every species of bird in North America, Wilson’s is a highly respected work in the history of science, and he was the leading competitor and chief precursor of Audubon. These are fine and important prints from the first American ornithology. Note on condition: The first edition of Wilson's American Ornithology was issued on American made paper that had many impurities in it. Thus it is almost impossible to find these prints without some discoloration and spotting on the paper. All prints listed below are in good condition for Wilson prints, with specific blemishes noted. 'Good' condition indicates that while there may be some discoloration or spotting, it is not considered by us to be visually displeasing nor to affect the value of the print in a significant manner.

Alexander Wilson
Father of American ornithology. Born in Paisley, the son of a weaver, Wilson initially followed the same trade, becoming an apprentice in Lochwinnoch. He also wrote and published poems, but unfortunately one of these resulted in his imprisonment for libel. On his release, Wilson emigrated to the USA. There he was employed as a teacher and engraver, but quickly became interested in ornithology. He travelled more than 10,000 miles through the Eastern US studying birds and this work led to the publishing of his American Ornithology in nine volumes (1808-14). This described more than 280 species and remains a valuable resource. He also carried out the first census of breeding birds in America. Wilson drowned while following a bird and lies buried in Philadelphia. He is remembered by a statue next to Paisley Abbey.

The "father of American ornithology," Alexander Wilson [1766-1813] , is well represented in the Hill Collection by beautiful copies of the first and second printings of the first edition of American ornithology , published from 1801 to 1814 in nine volumes, with a revised volume nine issued as a supplement in 1825. The birds in the first edition were grouped and presented by Wilson in random order. Later Wilson's close friend and collaborator on the first edition, George Ord [1781-1866], produced a four-volume version of American ornithology arranged systematically by species. At about the same time, Charles Lucien Bonaparte [1803-1857] prepared a supplementary four-volume American ornithology: birds not given by Wilson . Copies of the Ord and Bonaparte works round out the original editions of Wilson in the Hill Collection. Later editions and reprints of Wilson's American ornithology appeared throughout the century, edited or presented mainly by Robert Jameson

by Alexander Wilson Alexander Wilson Alexander Wilson has been called the "father of American ornithology." The scientific research and accuracy of description which underlay his nine-volume American Ornithology made all earlier books on ornithology obsolete. His paintings were typical of the early 19th century in that they were fixed, stiff portraits of birds, usually in profile, with little background and with several unrelated species crowded together on a page. While his individual birds lacked the action and splendor of Audubon's work, Wilson's unity of text and paintings created a rare and lasting catalog of the birds of America. continue tour
