Maurice Wilkins - DNA enabler As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the discovery of the structure of DNA, the Royal Society of New Zealand, in association with the NZ Portrait Gallery, commissioned a portrait of Maurice Wilkins (thanks to several contributors who are listed below) by one of our leading artists, Ms Juliet Kac. It also commissioned a poem by New Zealand poet Chris Orsman, which was read by Kiwi author Emily Perkins at the unveiling of the portrait of Maurice Wilkins in London this past November.
Living in Paradise
The family moved from Pongaroa to Wellington when Wilkins was still a baby, living at 30 Kelburn Parade. Wilkins has said these years were like "living in paradise". He believes passionately that he is a New Zealander, saying his years in Wellington were the happiest of his life. Wilkins firmly believes the opportunities for exploration and discovery in New Zealand helped his later development as a scientist: "In the time of my parents, before World War One, most people who came to New Zealand from Europe were the more enterprising people; the people who were stronger mentally. It takes a certain amount of imagination to make a life on the other side of the world, the same imagination it takes to climb the tallest mountain."
Student of John Randall
With the start of the Second World War, Wilkins began work for the Ministry of Home Security and Aircraft production. His research centered on radar development under John Randall at the University of Birmingham.

Classics Home Postgraduate Home Undergraduate Home Taught Masters ... Contact Professor John Wilkins I am a specialist in the history of food in Greco-Roman culture, with current interests in literature (especially comic drama) and medicine (especially nutrition). The texts I am currently working on are the Deipnosophistae (Philosophers at Dinner) of Athenaeus and On the Powers of Foods of Galen, both written in the last 2nd/early 3rd centuries AD, at a time when Greek authors were reviewing the previous millennium of Greek culture. I enjoy spending time in the countries of Europe, eating unusual food and (best of all) sitting round a table with friends, sharing food and drink and arguing about things that really matter. I have co-organised conferences on food, comedy, Athenaeus and international exchange in Britain and abroad. I am also developing electronic aids to teaching and research. I have strong links and a number of shared projects with colleagues in Paris. I have had research grants from the AHRB and the Wellcome Trust for visits to Germany and Poland. I was a visiting professor in Paris in 2000. My publications include: Euripides: Heraclidae (Oxford, 1993)

George Hubert Wilkins was born on 31 October 1888 at Mount Bryan, South Australia, 100 miles north of Adelaide. He was the youngest of 13 children. His upbringing, on the lonely farm at the edge of the Australian outback where he witnessed devastating droughts, was a motivation for his life's work. In 1903 his parents moved to Adelaide and Wilkins enrolled in the University but never completed his courses. He became interested in cinematography and moved to Sydney where he worked in Australia's pioneer film industry. He then left for England to work as a newsreel cinematographer for Gaumont.
After moving to London in 1909 Wilkins worked as a Gaumont cinematographer covering many international events including the Balkans War in 1912. But he still wanted to become a polar explorer. He was offered his first trip to the Arctic as cinematographer with the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913 led by Vilhjamur Stefansson. He walked thousands of miles over unexplored territory, learnt to live off the polar ice and developed his revolutionary ideas for polar travel. In 1916 he returned to Point Barrow, Alaska, to learn the world had been at war for two years.
When he learnt about the war, Wilkins went to France where he was appointed an official photographer with the Australian War Records Office. From November 1917 until the end of the War Wilkins was responsible for Australia's photographic record of fighting at the Western Front. He constantly risked his life working forward of the front line and refused to carry firearms. He became the only Australian official photographer, in any war, to receive a combat decoration. He was awarded the Military Cross twice. At the end of the war he travelled to Turkey to make a photographic record of the battlefields of Gallipoli.
