THE ANALYTICAL LANGUAGE OF JOHN WILKINS
By Jorge Luis Borges ; he did also suggest the creation of a language similar to this former system, a general language, organizing and covering all human ideas. John Wilkins, around 1664, started to work on this task. He divided the universe in forty categories or classes, these being further subdivided into differences, which was then subdivided into species. He assigned to each class a monosyllable of two letters; to each difference, a consonant; to each species, a vowel. For example: de , which means an element; deb , the first of the elements, fire; deba , a part of the element fire, a flame. In a similar language invented by Letellier (1850) a means animal; ab, mammal; abo, carnivore; aboj, feline; aboje, cat; abi, herbivore; abiv, horse; etc. In the language of Bonifacio Sotos Ochando (1845) imaba means building; imaca, harem; imafe, hospital; imafo, pesthouse; imari, house; imaru, country house; imedo, coloumn; imede, pillar; imego

John Wilkins (1614 - 1672)
John Wilkins' contribution to the development of science was more philosophic than theoretical. He wrote A Discourse concerning a New Planet (1640), which argued for a new approach to scientific experiment. His was a strong voice, among others, in the intellectual revolution of the 17th century. His writing had much in common with that of Galileo, although he was not directly influenced by him. Wilkins was brought up in Oxford, and was a son of Walter Wilkins - whose wife Jane was daughter of the Puritan minister John Dod. John received an enviable education - he was tutored in the classics by Edward Sylvester, an esteemed Greek scholar, and it was said that by the age of 13 Wilkins was ready to enter as a student at New-Inn before being moved to Magdalen Hall, Cambridge. Having completed a BA, he took orders and entered the Church. His writing, however, argued against using Holy Scriptures as evidence for physical reality, and warned that humankind should not be '... so superstitiously devoted to Antiquity as for to take up everything as canonical which drops from the pen of a Father...'. The scriptures, he said, should be referred to as '...a Rule of our Faith and Obedience', and he did not consider it wise '...to stretch it to be a Judge of such natural truths as are to be found out by our own industry and experience'.

26. Bishop John Wilkins
Concise information on this first president of the Royal Society.

Bishop John Wilkins
John Wilkins chaired the founding meeting of the Royal Society and was its first secretary. He was the only person to have been head of a college in both Cambridge and Oxford. He was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge but was deposed at the Restoration in 1660: he had married Oliver Cromwell's sister, and this did not endear him to returning royalty. He had previously been Warden of Wadham College, Oxford He is of interest to cryptographers because he wrote a book called `Mercury, or the Secret and Swift Messenger', which is described in David Kahn's history `The Codebreakers' as `the first book in English on cryptography'. It is much more than that: it is a treatise on the state of the art in seventeenth century telegraphy. Wilkins describes a number of optical and acoustic techniques. He explains how the letters of the alphabet can be represented as five bits each and then transmitted using any available means - such as two different bells, or a musket shot for `0' and a cannon shot for `1'. He goes on to what may be the first systematic treatment of coding in different number bases (binary and ternary). This technology evolved into the chains of semaphore stations used by both Britain and France in the Napoleonic wars, and they in turn stimulated the development of the electric telegraph in the mid-nineteenth century. He also speculates on whether a universal language could be constructed; this inspired Roget's thesaurus, and (much later) Esperanto. In passing, Wilkins explains how to protect telegraph messages against being understood by hostile observers. As well as showing how to break simple substitution ciphers, and introducing various geometrical enciphering schemes, he proposes the use of nulls to make cryptanalysis harder. He not only launches the subject of cryptology into the English literature, but introduces the words `cryptographia' and `cryptologia' to the English language. The book ends with two pages on cryptography policy that are still pertinent today. His conclusion is that `If all those useful Inventions that are liable to abuse, should therefore be concealed, there is not any Art or Science which might be lawfully profest'.

John Wilkins. John Wilkins January 1 November 19 ), an English churchman, served as Bishop of Chester from until his death. He was born at Fawsley Northamptonshire , and educated at Magdalen College, Oxford (then Magdalen Hall). After ordination he became vicar of his home town of Fawsley in 1637, but soon resigned and became chaplain successively to Lord Saye and Sele Lord Berkeley , and Prince Charles Louis , nephew of King Charles I and afterwards elector palatine of the Rhine In 1641, Wilkins published an anonymous treatise entitled Mercury, or The Secret and Swift Messenger . This small but comprehensive work on cryptography proved a timely gift to the diplomats and leaders of the imminent English Civil War . In he became warden of Wadham College, Oxford . Under him the college prospered extraordinarily, for, although a supporter of Oliver Cromwell , he remained in touch with the most cultured Royalists , who placed their sons in his charge. In

33. Darwinism And The Division Of Labour
The founding conference of the British Society for the Social Responsibility in Science in November 1970, was on the theme, 'The Social Impact of Modern Biology'. The conference was attended by a number of eminent scientists, e.g., Nobel Laureates James Watson, Jaques Monod, Maurice wilkins; David Bohm, Jacob Bronowski, R.G. Edwards (of Steptoe Edwards, the pioneers of 'testtube babies'), as well as some radicals, Hilary Steven Rose, john Beckwith. It was, perhaps, the last moment when radicals and posh scientists were relatively united. The talk was published in The Listener, 17 August 1972, pp. 202-5 and in Science as Culture no. 9 110-24, 1990.

Wilkins, John (1614-1672)
Brother-in-law of Oliver Cromwell and Oxford graduate who became Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and eventually Bishop of Chester. Wilkins was among the new wave of thinkers who voiced freely their opinions on the implications of the Copernican Revolution . As a young author he was one of several men, including Johannes Kepler , who, following Galileo 's telescopic observations, were inspired to speculate about the possibility of lunar life and of traveling to the Moon (see Moon, voyages to ). He expounded upon the former in the first edition of his book The Discovery of a World in the Moone, or, A Discourse Tending to Prove That 'Tis Probable There May Be Another Habitable World in That Planet published anonymously in 1638. Two years later, having read Francis Godwin 's contemporaneous fantasy about a lunar journey, he was encouraged to set down his own thoughts on such a possibility in the third edition of

Evolution and Philosophy
An Introduction
by John S. Wilkins Our apologies, but you must have JavaScript enabled to view author contact information.
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons License volution and philosophy have a relationship as old as the idea of evolution itself. This is partly due to the fact that science and philosophy only separated about the time evolutionary theories were being first proposed, but also because - especially in the Darwinian context - evolution was opposed to many cherished philosophical doctrines. The first main criticisms of evolution lay in the idea that species were eternal types, and so by definition species could not change. More recently, criticisms have rested on the notion of science itself, that evolution fails to meet the standards of true science, views that also were expressed at the time of Darwin and earlier. If we are to understand these criticisms, we must understand the philosophy of science in some detail. Many other topics of philosophical debate have been raised, and they are briefly reviewed: reductionism, progress and directionalism, teleology, naturalism, and evolutionary ethics. Not all of them are related to creationism, but all apply to antievolutionary arguments by those working from a humanities slant. Finally, the view has been put, even by philosophers like Popper who admire and accept evolutionary theory, that it is a tautology and metaphysical rather than science. My conclusion is that evolution, especially the modern theories, is science at its best, and when it and the nature of science are considered realistically, evolution is not lacking from a philosophical perspective. This essay will deal with these philosophical questions and misunderstandings about evolution:

Background note:
West Pointer John Darragh Wilkins was a career army officer with fifteen years of service behind him when the Civil War broke out. Having already received a commendation for gallant and meritorious conduct at the Battles of Contreras and Churubusco during the Mexican War, Wilkins had the reasonable expectation of personal advancement, and when he received a promotion from Adjutant to Captain of the 3rd Infantry in April, 1861, his notions might have seemed confirmed. Like many ambitious officers in the regular army, Wilkins was skeptical about the value of volunteer troops, and by the early months of 1862, his attitudes began to sour as he felt increasingly frustrated with the poor performance of the non-professionals in combat, the self-seeking leadership in the military, and the army's general ineffectiveness. Yet gnawing away even more at Wilkins' morale was his sense that while his class-mates from West Point and other officers rose through the ranks with ease, he remained mired in the sargassum of a captaincy. He moaned about having become the only field officer in his regiment, and was thus acting commander, while promotion still managed to elude him.
