by Simon Singh Eventually, my colleague, John Lynch, persuaded him that it was his duty to be filmed. By telling his story on screen, Wiles could inspire a new generation of mathematicians and reveal the power of mathematics to the public. Here was a story of passion and intrigue that would enchant people around the world.
Andrew Wiles aged ten years, when he first encountered Fermat's Last Theorem Wiles first became aware of the Last Theorem when he was ten years old. On his way home from school he popped into the Milton Road library and began reading The Last Problem by Eric Temple Bell. From that moment on, he dedicated his life to finding a proof, even though this was something that had eluded the greatest brains on the planet for three centuries. He completed his PhD in mathematics under the supervision of John Coates and eventually became a professor at Princeton University. His research was in number theory, but was not aimed at Fermat’s Last Theorem. Three hundred years after Fermat had thrown down the gauntlet, mathematicians had decided to put Fermat’s Last Theorem to one side because they considered it impossible. For example, the mathematician David Hilbert was asked why he did not attempt a proof of the Last Theorem, and he replied, "Before beginning I should have to put in three years of intensive study, and I haven’t that much time to squander on a probable failure.”

Andrew J. Wiles Awarded the "IMU Silver Plaque"
The British mathematician Andrew J. Wiles was honored with the "IMU silver plaque" of the International Mathematical Union. The chairman of the Fields Medals Committee, Yuri Manin, presented him with this award during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin. During the Congress, which is held every four years, four Fields Medals are awarded to outstanding mathematicians under the age of forty. In view of their significance the Fields medals are often dubbed the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics." Four years ago, Andrew J. Wiles was a hot favorite for an award, since in 1993 he had presented a proof of Fermat's Last Theorem one of the most famous mathematical puzzles, which had remained unsolved for more than 350 years. Shortly afterwards, however, colleagues found a gap in the proof, which Wiles was only able to close up a year later. But this was too late for the Fields Medal, because Wiles was then over the age limit of forty. With its special tribute, the International Mathematical Union acknowledged Andrew J. Wiles's outstanding achievement. Andrew J. Wiles

Home About Us Contact Us Subscribe ... Sports Thursday, May 05, 2005 UP Math prof proves Princeton man wrong By Rony V. Diaz Edgar Escultura, a professor of mathematics at the University of the Philippines, proved that Andrew Wiles’ proof of Fermat’s last theorem is false. In 1993 Andrew Wiles of Princeton University announced at a lecture in London that he had proved Fermat’s last theorem (FLT). This is a conjecture by the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in 1637 that for any integer n greater than 2, Fermat’s equation that claimed xn + yn = zn has no solution in integers x, y z except which satisfies the equation. Integers are whole numbers like 8, 73, 1,257, etc. Since that time mathematicians and amateurs had been trying to find a proof but failed. When Wiles made the announcement it was celebrated around the world. In Chicago, for instance, mathematicians marched on the streets in euphoric celebration. Escultura, who had been working on the problem since 1992, disputed Wiles’ claim and inserted his refutation in the appendix to his book, Diophantus: Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy. He went on to present his results at the Second International Conference on Dynamic Systems and Applications in Atlanta in 1995.

FERMAT'S LAST THEOREM
Cubem autem in duos cubos, aut quadratoquadratum in duos quadratoquadratos, et generaliter nullam in infinitum ultra quadratum potestatem in duos ejusdem nominis fas est dividere: cujus rei demonstrationem mirabilem sane detexi. Hanc marginis exiguitas non caparet. By contrast it is impossible to separate a cube into two cubes, a fourth power into two fourth powers, or in general any power above the second into two powers of the same degree. I have found a truly marvelous proof of this theorem but this margin is too narrow to contain it.
