Lost in a Forest
by Steven R. Finch and John E. Wetzel
Steven.Finch@inria.fr
j-wetzel@uiuc.edu
Fifty years ago, Richard Bellman posed an interesting search problem that can be phrased as follows: A hiker is lost in a forest whose shape and dimensions (but not its orientation) are precisely known to him. What is the best path for him to follow to escape from the forest? Construing “best” as meaning “shortest,” we survey what is known for regions of various shapes, we clarify the relationship with Leo Moser's well-known “worm” problem, and we consider some related questions. Potter, Wielandt, and Drazin on the Matrix Equation AB : New Answers to Old Questions

holtz@math.Berkeley.edu

In this partly historical and partly research-oriented note, as part of our continuing examination of the unpublished mathematical diaries of Helmut Wielandt we display a page dated 1951. There he gives a new proof of a theorem due to H. S. A. Potter on the matrix equation AB BA , which is related to the q -binomial theorem, and asks some further questions, which we mostly answer. We also describe results by M. P. Drazin and others on this equation.

Eigenvalues, the Duality Theorem, and Linear Programming
      ALAN : Alan Hoffman
      IRV : Irvin Lustig
      Video Excerpt

      IRV
How did your work in linear programming influence you in other areas? ALAN I discovered that in addition to planning, there were two more ways in which linear programming was relevant. One had to do with an estimation of eigenvalues on matrices. In my work with Helmut Wielandt, a visiting mathematician from Germany, we studied the question of eigenvalues as related to matrices and distances, and we solved it using linear programming. Our theorem on the estimation of eigenvalues is called the Hoffman-Wielandt theorem. It was a thrill to me to see that linear programming could be applied to other parts of mathematics, including combinatorial problems, like the Konig-Egervary theorem. It was through this theorem, rather than through the diet problem, that I was able to understand duality. IRV George mentioned the diet problem in my interview with him as one of the first problems ever solved. Were there others?

Jakob Nielsen papers
General, short description of the collection
A short description:
This collection of Jakob Nielsen papers consists mainly of reprints, which Nielsen has received from other scientists and sorted by authors. In addition to the reprints there is other material from some of the persons, i.e. letters, manuscripts, applications for positions etc. All the material is from the period around 1890-1959 and the reprints are in many different languages. However, the additional material is mainly in Danish or German.
Size:
The collection is contained in 79 archival boxes of which the first 25 are standard boxes while the rest are Nielsen's original boxes.
Handed over:
The collection was located in the basement of the mathematical library in the E block of the H. C. Ørsted Institute in the fall of 1996. It is not known when and how it was put here. Photocopies of material from the Staatsarchiv Hamburg was added to box 10 in July 1999.

Jakob Nielsen papirer
Overordnet beskrivelse af samlingen
Kort beskrivelse:
Klausuler:

Householder Numerical Linear Algebra Symposium Meets in Peebles, Scotland
Mark Embree
The Edwardian charm of the Peebles Hotel Hydro in the Scottish Borders was the backdrop for the Fifteenth Householder Symposium on Numerical Linear Algebra, held June 10-14. The conference, which meets every three years, continues the tradition established by the Gatlinburg Symposia, originally organized by Alston Householder and held in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. A picture from an early symposium is immortalized in Matlab: load gatlin; image(X); colormap(map) The Householder Symposia are exceptional for their limited size (roughly 125 delegates) and remote location, intended to minimize distractions. Young researchers have ample opportunity to mix with leaders in the field, facilitated at this year's conference by random seating at lunch and dinner in the hotel dining room. The customary format consists of plenary talks during the day, followed by parallel sessions in the afternoon and evening. Lively exchanges during the talks are encouraged, although the audience was generally decorous at this year's meeting. Some Highlights The Householder meetings provide good vantage points for identifying research trends in numerical linear algebra. A visitor to the 1999 symposium in Whistler, British Columbia, for example, would have noticed an emphasis on model reduction of large-scale dynamical systems.

Reminiscences and Appreciation
Philip J. Davis
A two-day conference, Numerical Analysis, Linear Algebra and Computations, was held at the California Institute of Technology, May 16-17, to celebrate the 90th birthday of John Todd. Philip Davis, whose association with Todd dates back to the time just after World War II, looked back on those early days of computing and numerical analysis in the first invited talk at the conference. What follows is an adapted version of that talk. We gathered in Pasadena to honor a nonagenarian of international reputation who has devoted at least eighty of his ninety years to the cause of mathematics and to its applications. There is an old proverb that asks: "Who is honored?" The answer given is: "He who honors other people." So I was greatly honored by the opportunity to pay tribute to John Todd. It is by no means an easy matter to select out the high points of a long profes-sional career, but for this occasion it seemed important that I make the attempt. Jack Todd was born in 1911. He received his BSc at Queens College Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1931. During World War II, he was with the Mine Design Department in Portsmouth, England, and later with the Admiralty Computing Service in London. In 1939, just before the war began, Jack and Olga Taussky were married. In 1946, he gave his first course in numerical mathematics at King's College London. In 1949, John Curtiss hired him to head the Computation Laboratory at the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST) in Washington, and from 1954 to 1957 he was chief of the Numerical Analysis Section. He moved to Caltech as a professor of mathematics in 1957 and has been there since that time.
