54. Legends Of Climbing -- Stories From The World's Greatest Mountain Climbers: Ed V
Lou whittaker, john Roskelley, Stacy Allison, Greg Child, Jim Wickwire Ed Viesturs. Mountain Zone Editor Peter Potterfield was asked by the Outside Radio
http://classic.mountainzone.com/climbing/misc/legends.html
The Legends of Climbing
Mountain Zone Editor Peter Potterfield was asked by the Outside Radio Network to moderate the Climbing Legends symposium, which featured a panel of America's best known high altitude climbers. Sponsored by The North Face and Chevy Trucks, the event was held at REI's Flagship Store in Seattle on November 15, 1997. Here is Potterfield's report: The Climbing Legends forum had long ago sold out, and in mere days, at $7 per head, so it was a packed house at Seattle's REI store when Ed Viesturs, Jim Wickwire, Stacy Allison, John Roskelley, Greg Child and Lou Whittaker climbed up on the dais for two hours of questions and answers. Steven Bezruchka, a physician with extensive Himalayan experience, was also on hand.
Peter Potterfield Greg Child shared what it's like to be on the North Face Climbing Team; we learned of the only instance in Ed Viestur's remarkably safe climbing career when he thought he had pushed his luck too far; we heard John Roskelley's most memorable moment in the mountains (it's not even about climbing); and, a dozen other cool details you'd never learn if you weren't just sitting around shooting the breeze. The entire program is to be broadcast on the Outside Magazine's fledgling Outside Radio Network at a date to be announced later. In the meantime, here are some of the things America's best-known climbers had to say.

Lou Whittaker: "What we're hearing here tonight proves that we've all been damn lucky, and maybe that's tempered by a little bit a good judgment as well. When you see a climber like Willi Unsoeld die in an avalanche on Mount Rainier, you have to admit that even the best of climbers can make mistakes. Remember, there are old climbers and bold climbers, but no old, bold climbers. That risk is always there. We've lost a lot of friends but we have a great time in the mountains. Security is a superstition, as Helen Keller said, it does not exist in nature. Avoiding danger is no safer than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing."
John Roskelley: But, ironically, one of my most interesting experiences in the mountains had nothing to do with climbing. It was during an approach in the Himalaya, and I was walking along by myself listening to my Walkman. I crested a small hill and found myself face-to-face with a snow leopard. It was an incredible experience, and it shows how the good times had while climbing have as much to do with the places you go and people you go with as with the actual climbing.

Verbatim reports of proceedings and Debates of the European Parliament. Speeches by Dr. John Whittaker Speech on the World Bank Mr President, in the European Union, we are very good at sanctimonious rhetoric about the need for poverty reduction in poor countries. But whatever the appearances, this is not what today’s discussion is about. As Mr Almunia has made clear, it is about influence. Full Details Speech on the European Economic Situation (Goebbels report) Mr President, Mr Goebbels' report is a frank admission of much that is wrong with the European Union. He has recognised that high economic growth is necessary to achieve low unemployment, to pay pensions and to achieve what is here called 'social cohesion' or 'social protection'. Full Details Speech on Competition Policy (Evans report) Mr President, we all recognise that there is a case for promoting competition in the interests of economic efficiency. Mrs Kroes has promised to continue the work of her predecessor in rooting out unfair state aid and cartels wherever she can find them. Full Details The EU budget In EU countries about one fortieth of tax revenue is spent by EU institutions. In Britain, we are told that this is a small price to pay for the privilege of trading with our neighbours and for the prosperity the EU has brought us.
