A member of the Republican Party , White was elected to the House of Representatives in 1880. He campaigned for increased spending on African American education. White helped to establish four new schools and for a while served as principal of the school in New Bern.
In 1885 White was elected to the state Senate where he served on the committees for the insane asylum, insurance and judiciary. He also continued to work as a lawyer in New Bern and Taboro.

Walter Francis White was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on 1st July, 1893. His father was a postman and his mother a schoolteacher. Atlanta had Jim Crow laws and as a child White attended African American schools and sat in the rear of buses. When he was thirteen White experienced a race riot in Atlanta.
Although White's African American school was of a poor standard he managed to obtain a place at Atlanta University. After graduating in 1916 White worked for Standard Life, a large insurance company. He also became secretary of the Atlanta branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP). White organized a campaign to improve African American public facilities in the city. This brought him to the attention of James Weldon Johnson , who offered him a full-time post at the NAACP.

Lou Henry Hoover Admirably equipped to preside at the White House, Lou Henry Hoover brought to it long experience as wife of a man eminent in public affairs at home and abroad. She had shared his interests since they met in a geology lab at Leland Stanford University. She was a freshman, he a senior, and he was fascinated, as he declared later, "by her whimsical mind, her blue eyes and a broad grinnish smile." Born in Iowa, in 1874, she grew up there for ten years. Then her father, Charles D. Henry, decided that the climate of southern California would favor the health of his wife, Florence. He took his daughter on camping trips in the hillsher greatest pleasures in her early teens. Lou became a fine horsewoman; she hunted, and preserved specimens with the skill of a taxidermist; she developed an enthusiasm for rocks, minerals, and mining. She entered Stanford in 1894"slim and supple as a reed," a classmate recalled, with a "wealth of brown hair"and completed her course before marrying Herbert Hoover in 1899.

Henry I and the White Ship 100 - 1135 William I left the duchy of Normandy to his eldest son, Robert, and the kingdom of England to his second son, William Rufus. Armed rivalry between the two was suspended in 1096, when Duke Robert joined the First Crusade and pawned Normandy to William Rufus. In 1100, while Duke Robert was travelling homeward, William Rufus was killed in a hunting accident. His younger brother Henry, who was - perhaps coincidentally - hunting nearby, hastened to have himself proclaimed King. Having agreed a settlement with Duke Robert, Henry I rapidly moved against the Duke's allies, dispossessing the powerful earl Robert of Shrewsbury. In 1106 he defeated the Duke in battle, conquering Normandy for England. Finally he assured his succession by marrying William, his only legitimate son, to the daughter of the Count of Anjou. However, William died in 1120 in the wreck of the White Ship, a state-of-the-art vessel which went down carrying most of the royal household. In his place, Henry named his daughter Matilda as his heir - a fatefully unpopular choice. Like the beginning, the end of Henry's reign illustrated the precariousness of Norman succession.

Henry White 's parents were Isadore Maria Haight and Aaron White. Henry attended Cazenovia Seminary where his father was a teacher of elementary mathematics and surveying. From there White entered the Wesleyan University, in Middletown, Connecticut, which was founded in 1831 by a group of Methodists. At the Wesleyan University White was taught mathematics and astronomy by Van Vleck 's father, John Monroe Van Vleck. It was John Monroe Van Vleck who persuaded White that he should continue to study mathematics at graduate level. John Monroe Van Vleck was himself a graduate of the Wesleyan University, taught there from 1853 until he retired in 1912, and was actively involved in the development of the American Mathematical Society After graduating with an A.B. in 1882, White was appointed as an assistant to John Monroe Van Vleck in the astronomical observatory at the Wesleyan University, then he moved to Centenary Collegiate Institute, Hackettstown, New Jersey where he taught mathematics and chemistry for a year before returning to the Wesleyan University to become a tutor. In 1887, following advice from John Monroe Van Vleck, he decided to study for his doctorate in Germany and travelled to Leipzig to begin working with

    Henry Kirke White
    A Poet's Humble Beginings
Henry Kirke White was a Nottingham poet who drew inspiration for much of his poetry from Wilford and Clifton. He was born in 1785 in Nottingham where the Exchange Walk Arcade now stands on Cheapside. A small slate plaque just inside the entrance to the Arcade marks the location. He was the son of a butcher who became a lawyers Clerk in Bridlesmiths Gate when 14 years old.
An Exhausting Pace He put all his energy into his work and his studies before taking his first steps into poetry. In a letter to a friend he wrote:-
'I have been for the last three months busily engaged in preparing a volume of poems for the press. To this undertaking every moment which I could snatch from business and sleep has been devoted ... perhaps you will deem me presumptuous that I venture to appear before the public at so early an age but I have been encouraged by ... men of eminence in the literary world ... I have not the capacity to pursue my studies as I would wish from a narrowness of income, this book if successful will be a material health to me.' In fact he was expending so much energy in work, studies and poetry that he was becoming ill. He became so fragile he believed he was about to die and made it known he wanted to be buried in one of his favorite locations, Wilford.
