Hermann Weyl (known as Peter to his close friends) was educated at the universities of Munich and Göttingen. His doctorate was from Göttingen where his supervisor was Hilbert. After submitting a doctoral dissertation Singuläre Integralgleichungen mit besonder Berücksichtigung des Fourierschen Integraltheorems he was awarded the degree in 1908. It was at Göttingen that he held his first teaching post. From 1913 to 1930 he held the chair of mathematics at Zürich Technische Hochschule, from 1930 to 1933 he held the chair of mathematics at Göttingen and from 1933 until he retired in 1952 he worked at the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton. He attempted to incorporate electromagnetism into the geometric formalism of general relativity. Weyl published Die Idee der Riemannschen Fläche (1913) which united analysis, geometry and topology. He produced the first unified field theory for which the Maxwell electromagnetic field and the gravitational field appear as geometrical properties of space-time. From 1923-38 he evolved the concept of continuous groups using matrix representations. With his application of group theory to quantum mechanics he set up the modern subject. He also made contributions on the uniform distribution of numbers modulo 1 which are fundamental in analytic number theory.

Hermann Weyl Hilbert . He later wrote:- I resolved to study whatever this man had written. At the end of my first year I went home with the "Zahlbericht" under my arm, and during the summer vacation I worked my way through it - without any previous knowledge of elementary number theory or Galois theory. These were the happiest months of my life, whose shine, across years burdened with our common share of doubt and failure, still comforts my soul. Hilbert . After submitting his doctoral dissertation he was awarded the degree in 1908. This thesis investigated singular integral equations, looking in depth at Fourier privatdozent , a post he held until 1913. His habilitation thesis investigated the spectral theory of singular Sturm Liouville Riemann surfaces in session 1911-12 and out of this course came his first book which was published in 1913. Weyl, Hermann German mathematician and mathematical physicist who studied mainly topological space and the geometry of Bernhard Riemann, but also quantum mechanics and number theory.
As a colleague of Albert Einstein during 1913, Weyl became interested in the developing general theory of relativity and came to believe (erroneously) that he had found a way to a grand unification of gravitation and electromagnetism. Weyl was able to anticipate the nonconservation of parity, which has since been found to be characteristic of weak interactions between leptons (a class of subatomic particles).
Weyl's most important work on Riemann surfaces was the definition of the complex manifold of the first dimension, which has been important in all later work on the theory of both complex and of differential manifolds.
Weyl's works include Raum-Zeit-Materie/Space-Time-Matter 1918. He also published works on philosophy, logic, and the history of mathematics.

He was one of the first to conceive of combining general relativity with the laws of electromagnetism . While no mathematician of his generation aspired to the 'universalism' of Henri Poincaré or Hilbert, Weyl came as close as anyone.

Symmetry, as wide or narrow as you may define its meaning, is one idea by which man through the ages has tried to comprehend and create order, beauty, and perfection. Hermann Weyl, 1885-1955 In 1930, Weyl accepted the mathematics chair at Göttingen as a replacement for Hilbert, who retired that year. With the rise of the German Nazi regime in January 1933, Weyl left Göttingen and accepted an academic position at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, where he worked with Einstein and others until his retirement in 1952. In his last years he returned to Zürich, where he died on December 8, 1955 at the age of seventy. In addition to pioneering work on matrix representations of continuous groups, analytic number theory, Riemann surfaces and topology, Weyl developed a gauge theory of the 4-dimensional spacetime metric
