To.....A walk on the wild highland way! Eight days and eight nights... ...on the West Highland Way... ...This site is a personal recollection and story of my trip or jaunt on the West Highland Way and is not intended as a guide, though there is one or two snippets in the story you may keep in mind if you intend to take up the challenge of walking the "way". The "way" is roughly 100 miles long, from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William on the west coast, taking you through the remnants of the Caledonian forest, Loch Lomond, Glencoe, a view of the Arrochar Alps, the West Highland Railway, marshland, hillside and glens. The terrain can be rough, steep, boggy, over tree roots, it also follows an old Drovers road, disused railway lines, An old Military road and barely discernible tracks. Being in the west of Scotland the weather is unpredictable at best. From being "dreich" or howling wind and rain to brilliant sunshine in a matter of hours is not unusual. At night (or even day) the temperature can plummet, even in the summer. And if the weather doesn't get you, the midges will! (they are especially ferocious around Loch Lomond and Glencoe) which are out and about early morning and early evening mainly in July/August. Accommodation is limited and choc-a-bloc in the summer, if you have not booked ahead then you will need a sturdy weatherproof tent and a good sleeping bag because camping is the only alternative. At the end of 35 minutes, John Henry had drilled - two seven foot holes - a total of fourteen feet, while the steam drill had only drilled one nine foot hole. Some folks say that John Henry's likeness is carved right into the rock inside the Big Bend Tunnel. And if you walk to the edge of the blackness of the tunnel, sometimes you can hear the sound of two 20 pound hammers drilling their way to victory over the machine.
