23. John Spencer Loves Life On 'The West Wing' -- Even Facing Death

John Spencer loves life on 'The West Wing' even facing death
By Frazier Moore
Associated Press NEW YORK It was an unsettling scene last May, to say the least. President Bartlet, his lovely daughter and her boyfriend, and all the White House bigwigs you adore were blasted by gunfire in a Virginia parking lot. Then a slow fade to black for the "West Wing" season finale, and a 41/2-month wait to see if everyone made it. You could have analyzed that wrenching scene frame-by-frame, like poring over the Zapruder film. But even if you did, the questions remained: Who were the shooters? Who was their intended target, and why? Who was hit? How badly? In the choppy, blurry ambush, everybody was seen lurching or hitting the ground. But there were no telltale wounds or blood. No obvious casualties. Obvious not even to the actors getting fired upon, including John Spencer, who plays chief of staff Leo McGarry. "One or more of us could have taken a bullet," Spencer acknowledged last June. "But who among us did, we don't know. We were all supposed to panic and drop as we heard the shots." No one with the series or NBC has been talking since, except in recent days to taunt "West Wing" fans with incessant promos asking "WHO'S BEEN SHOT?"

John Augustus Sutter
At one time the absolute ruler of what amounted to a private kingdom along the Sacramento River, John Sutter saw his immense wealth and power overrun in the world's rush to pick California clean of gold. Sutter was born John Augustus Sutter in Baden, Germany, though his parents had originally come from Switzerland, a lineage of which he was especially proud. In 1834, faced with impossible debt, he decided to try his fortunes in America and, leaving his family in a brother's care, set sail for New York. There he decided that the West offered him the best opportunity for success, and he moved to Missouri, where for three years he operated as a trader on the Santa Fe Trail. By 1838, Sutter had determined that Mexican California held the promise of fulfilling his ambitious dreams, and he set off along the Oregon Trail , arriving at Fort Vancouver, near present-day Portland, Oregon, in hopes of finding a ship that would take him to San Francisco Bay. His journey involved detours to the Hawaiian Islands and to a Russian colony at Sitka, Alaska, but Sutter made the most of his wanderings by trading advantageously along the way. When he finally arrived in California in 1839, Sutter met first with the provincial governor in Monterey and secured permission to establish a settlement east of San Francisco (then called Yerba Buena) along the Sacramento River , in an area then occupied only by Indians.

John M. Chivington
The hero of Glorietta Pass and the butcher of Sand Creek, John M. Chivington stands out as one of the most controversial figures in the history of the American West. Chivington was born into an Ohio farm family in 1821. His father died when he was only five and the burden of providing for the family fell to Chivington's mother and older brothers. While he was growing up, Chivington worked on the family farm so much that he received only an irregular education. By the time of his marriage in 1844 he had been operating a small timber business in Ohio for several years. Although he had not been particularly religious as a child and young man, Chivington found himself drawn toward Methodism when he was in his early twenties. He was ordained in 1844 and soon began his long career as a minister. He accepted whatever assignment the church gave him, moving his family to Illinois in 1848 and then to Missouri the next year. Chivington was something of a frontier minister, usually establishing congregations, supervising the erection of churches, and often serving as a de facto law enforcement officer. For a time in 1853 he assisted in a Methodist missionary expedition to the Wyandot Indians in Kansas. Chivington's contempt for slavery and talk of secession caused him enormous trouble in Missouri. In 1856, pro-slavery members of his congregation sent him a threatening letter instructing him to cease preaching. When many of the signatories attended his service the next Sunday, intending to tar and feather him, Chivington ascended the pulpit with a Bible and two pistols. His declaration that "By the grace of God and these two revolvers, I am going to preach here today" earned him the sobriquet the "Fighting Parson."

31. The Chemistry And Processing Of Jamaican Bauxite
Information about the extraction of bauxite, from Professor Robert john Lancashire, University of the west Indies.
http://wwwchem.uwimona.edu.jm:1104/lectures/bauxite.html
The Chemistry and Processing of Jamaican Bauxite
The first commercial extraction of alumina (Al O ) from bauxite has been attributed to Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in about 1854. Soon after this, in 1888, Karl Joseph Bayer described what is now known as the Bayer Process, which led to a dramatic reduction in the cost of aluminum metal. Today, it is an everyday commodity, rather than a precious metal. Although deposits of aluminous red earth have been known to occur in the Tertiary Limestone areas (which covers two thirds of the land surface of Jamaica) since the 1820's, it was not until the 1940's that their economic significance as an ore of aluminum was recognised. In October, 1943, Alcan was incorporated under the name Jamaica Bauxites Limited as a Jamaican company to investigate the commercial potential of Jamaican bauxite. In the same year, 2500 tonnes of ore was shipped to the USA for process investigation and it was realised that the bauxite was suitable for processing using Bayer technology.
The Kirkvine works were completed around 1952 and the first shipment of alumina was consigned to a Norwegian smelter in January 1953.

Biography of one of the deadliest outlaw gunslingers of the old west.

Home Stage/Screen Music Sports ... Journalism John Wesley Hardin
Click here to see original photograph
O ld West outlaw and gunslinger John Wesley Hardin was born May 26, 1853, in Bonham, Texas. Rumored to be so mean he once shot a man for snoring, Hardin was shot to death in El Paso on August 19, 1895, by a man he had hired to kill someone else. John's father, James G. Hardin, was a Methodist preacher, lawyer, schoolteacher and circuit rider. His mother was Elizabeth Hardin. At age fourteen, John stabbed a schoolmate. At age fifteen, he shot a black man to death in Polk County. While fleeing from the law following that murder, he killed at least one, and possibly four Union soldiers who were attempting to apprehend him. As a cowboy on the Chisolm Trail in 1871, Hardin killed seven people. He killed three more upon arriving in Abilene, Kansas. Back in Texas, following a run-in with the State Police back in Gonzales County, Hardin got married, settled down and had three children. But he soon resumed his murder spree, killing 4 more times before surrendering to the Cherokee County sheriff in September 1872. He broke out of jail after a couple of weeks, however. Hardin next killed Jack Helm, a former State Police captain, who led the fight against the anti-Reconstructionist forces of Jim Taylor in the Sutton-Taylor Feud. Hardin had become a supporter of Taylor's from 1873 to 1874.

A uthor, lecturer, and guide, John Anthony West delivered a seismic shock to archaeology in the early 1990's when he and Boston University geologist Robert Schoch revealed that the Great Sphinx of Giza, Egypt, showed evidence of rainfall erosion. Such erosion could only mean that the Sphinx was carved during or before the rains that marked the transition of northern Africa from the last Ice Age to the present interglacial epoch, a transition that occurred in the millennia from 10,000 to 5000 BC.
" Egyptian civilisation was not a development, it was a legacy "

THE SPHINX LIVES JAW ON MSNBC http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5727486 Experience teaches me that dealing with the mainstream media is always like trying to befriend a tiger by hand-feeding it steaks. One wrong move and you get your arm chewed off, or just an insatiably hungry tiger... In any event, I was pleased by this brief but informative piece, and think you will be too. If it had appeared on the Fox news site I would have been obliged to call it 'fair and balanced', which would have complicated matters, since this would have the been the first time anyone (outside the Fox network) had ever uttered those words other than sarcastically. On MSNBC, however, there is no need for further roundabout explanation. It's well done and concentrates on the matter immediately to hand which is of course to try to generate the money needed for the interminably postponed geo-panel.
