Karl Pearson: A Reader’s Guide Go to FRONT page Print the legend! [The first thing Pearson could remember] was sitting in a high chair sucking his thumb. Someone told him to stop sucking it, and added that unless he did so, the thumb would wither away. He put his two thumbs together and looked at them for a long time. “They look alike to me,” he said to himself. “I can’t see that the thumb I suck is any smaller than the other. I wonder if she could be lying to me.” Here in this simple story we have rejection of constituted authority, faith in his own interpretation of the meaning of observed data, and finally, imputation of moral obliquity to a person whose judgement differed from his own. These characteristics were prominent throughout his entire career. of modern statistics were Karl Pearson (18571936), the first Galton Professorof Eugenics at UCL, and raphael weldon (1860-1906), who was also at UCL.
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/~ucbhtoc/History.html
A brief history of biometry Modern statistics originated in the 17th century from two sources. The first came from political science and was developed to describe in a quantitative way, the affairs of goverment and the state (which is in fact where the term stat isistics actually comes from). This study was also known as political arithmetic. The development of taxing and insurance systems promoted an interest in censusing population numbers, and measuring longevity (which we will cover in this course) and causes of mortality. These problems attracted a special interest in England, as the country prospered during the development of its empire. John Graunt (1620-1674) and William Petty (1623-1687) were two of the statisticians of this time. The second root of modern statistics, the mathematical theory of probability, developed mostly in continental Europe out of an interest in games of chance or gambling. Major contributors to this theory were Pierre de Fermat Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) and Jacques Bernoulli (1654-1705). These two approaches were first combined by

Enough Speculation
Michael Ruse
A llen Orr's critique of Darwin's Black Box is devastating and, assuming that there are some out there who find the book plausible and yet have open minds, might do some good. For me, although I did not need convincing, there is the sheer pleasure in seeing an expert in his field take on the ignorant and arrogantly presumptuous. However, I do feel that Orr failed to raise the most important issue of all: Did Behe have the right, in the first place, to appeal to design? Do not misunderstand me. As far as I am concerned, if Behe wants to appeal to design to understand the world, he can do so all that he wants. I will defend to the end his right to do so. If he wants to spend the next six months standing on his head in Harvard Square, I am his backer. Rather, I ask whether he has the right to do so in a context where he expects us to take him seriously, especially to take him seriously as a scientist. Think of an analogous example. This last summer, a large jetliner went down in the Atlantic just off Long Island. Six months later, no one has any real idea as to how or why it happened. Would the pertinent aviation authorities, or the President of the United States for that matter, have the right to declare that it was an act of God, in the sense of a miraculous intervention by the Deity? Or, if you prefer, by an evil spirit? Our reaction to such a suggestion would be somewhere between humor and disgust, even in a country like the United States where God is invoked in public discourse with a frequency and familiarity which makes the members of older civilizations cringe with embarrassment.

Book Review Holding Their Own: Perspectives on the Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the United States, by Dorothea Fischer-Hornung and Heike Raphael-Hernandez (2000), 336 pages. Samir Dayal Nothing more vividly reveals a culture to itself than a recognition of itself in an outsider’s eyes. It is not too much to say then that one of the most productive features of a collection of essays on multi-ethnic literatures of America published in Europe, such as Holding Their Own , is that it provides an outsider’s perspective. By the same token, it is worth noting too that the multicultural situation in the U.S. potentially has some light to shed on Europe’s own struggles with multi-ethnic constituencies. Admittedly, it is not always clear in this collection that cultural distance is really the salient feature of the comments made by the contributors, or that there is something particularly European about a given commentator’s analysis. Still, most of the contributors are affiliated with universities outside of the U.S., or are not U.S. residents, and this certainly plays a role in the rich variety of perspectives gathered together in this publication. Such “outsider” perspectives can productively displace a U.S.-centered understanding of U.S. multi-ethnic literatures’ significance in a larger, international context. What is invoked in this rich and varied collection of essays, then, is a kind of double consciousness: an appreciation of those literatures simultaneously within the national (U.S.) context and in a broader conceptual frame. This is most appropriate, since double consciousness is one of the five key themes organizing these wide-ranging essaysthe other four are the various ways of conceptualizing the intertwined notions of home, place and space, cultural difference, the politics and poetics of opposition, and marginality. The editors admit candidly that the volume’s twenty-four essays (not counting the introduction or the brief Afterword) “have been divided into chapters to unify a decidedly non-unified project” (xii-xiii). The essays appearing under each chapter do have a rough coherence; they can be regarded as variations on themes.

Hi Everyone. We've just returned from the grueling and exciting three day weekend that is the State Championships, held this year at Cal State Northridge. In short, there were many positive results, including a second place team performance in the large school division. The Bells earned 118 points as a team, usually enough to win the title; however, James Logan of Union City, having been denied for the last two years, quite simply would not take second again. Logan won with an all-time high score of 143 points. We congratulate Mr. Tommie Lindsey and the James Logan team on a monumental effort; please take a minute and congratulate our own guys, listed below, who won and lost with equal grace...
