Andre Weil, mathematician, died on August 6 aged 92. He was born on May 6, 1906. One of the most respected mathematicians of the second half of this century, Andre Weil is best known for two things: his fundamental discoveries in number theory, and his membership of the secretive group known as Bourbaki, which redefined the foundations of modern pure mathematics. He held a professorship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, where his colleagues included Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, John von Neumann and Kurt Godel. His sister Simone, the renowned mystic and philosopher, active in the French Resistance, died in 1943. Andre Weil was born in Paris. His father Bernard was a physician; his mother Selma came from a community of Austrian Jews in the Russian port of Rostov-on-Don. By the age of ten he was "passionately addicted" to mathematics, as he says in his autobiography The Apprenticeship of a Mathematician. His other passions were languages in 1922, aged 16, he read the Bhagavad Gita in the original Sanskrit and travel. After graduating from the Ecole Normale in Paris he went walking in the French Alps, always taking with him a notebook of mathematical calculations. He was especially fascinated by "Diophantine equations" named after the Greek Diophantus, who flourished around AD 250 where the name of the game is to find whole numbers that satisfy some stated algebraic relation. (For example: find three whole numbers whose sum is a square and whose sums in pairs are also squares. Diophantus's answer: 41, 80, and 320.)

Bourbaki, Nicolas (1939) Mike Conlay mconlay@sdcc14 written 6/11/95 presented 6/15/95 Nicolas Bourbaki was not an actual person. Rather his name is a pseudonym for a society of young twentieth century french mathematicians. This group of mathematicians stemed from a group of young graduates of the Ecole Normal Superieure in Paris. These men sought to jointly write a textbook on analysis geared toward French university students. This book was intended to replace the classic annalysis textbook used in France that had been writen by Goursat. They wished for it to live up to the quality of Goursat's work yet modernize it so that it incorporated mathmatical advancements that had occured in the twentieth century. Thus began the mathematical society that collaborated under the pseudonym Bourbaki. The format of Elements is very abstract and strictly logical. Thus it may appear boring or above the capabilities of less experienced mathematicians. Bourbaki once wrote that the Elements were "...directed especially to those who have a good knowledge of at least the contents of the first year or two of a university mathematics course." This, however, refered to those who attended the Ecole Normale Superieue in Paris, one of the finest mathematical institutions in France where such notables as Lagrange had taught. Furthermore, the problems in "Excercise", which accompanied the Elements, are too difficult for any undergraduate. But through this style, Bourbaki's Elements presented an intrinsically complex unified and simplified account of the products of mathematics, even the most recent ones. The Elements were left open to constant revision to accomodate for the ever developing world of mathematics.

Warner, Sylvia Townsend
For twenty pages perhaps, he read slowly, carefully, dutifully, with pauses for self-examination and working out examples. Then, just as it was working up and the pauses should have been more scrupulous than ever, a kind of swoon and ecstasy would fall on him, and he read ravening on, sitting up till dawn to finish the book, as though it were a novel. After that his passion was stayed; the book went back to the Library and he was done with mathematics till the next bout. Not much remained with him after these orgies, but something remained: a sensation in the mind, a worshiping acknowledgment of something isolated and unassailable, or a remembered mental joy at the rightness of thoughts coming together to a conclusion, accurate thoughts, thoughts in just intonation, coming together like unaccompanied voices coming to a close.

Jim Propp,
I plan to be doing some work on Weil this summer. I discussed these
letters briefly in a book a few years ago, but did not provide a full
translation. I do not believe an English translation currently exists.
If you can wait for a fwe months I can probably provide a translation.
Otherwise I 'd be happy to help out. They are very beautiful and in
certain
ways quite astonishing pieces of prose.

Summary:
Dr Jacques Cabaud is Simone Weil's first biographer. His book, "Simone Weil: A Fellowship in Love," is published by Harvill Press London, 1964. This is a transcript of the full interview with Jacques Cabaud speaking to Lyn Gallacher from his home in Germany.
Presenter: Lyn Gallacher
Details or Transcript:
How did you first come across Simone Weil?
In 1950, I was in Paris on a scholarship to work on a thesis, the title of which was "Pascal the Mystic". That's when I fell upon a newspaper review of Simone Weil's second posthumous book: "Waiting on God". The quotations in this article were so striking, and of such exceptional literary quality, and the authenticity of the mystical experience so obvious, I fell under the spell immediately. "Pascal can wait", I thought," this is genuine, this is great furthermore, this is new, untouched territory. Forget secondary literature. I'll be the first! I'll write her biography." This was seven years after her death.. Somebody had to interview the witnesses of her life, very few of whom had died, as she had, during the war years. Luckily, her parents had carefully stored her manuscript writings which were plentiful.
You mean her parents were aware their daughter was a genius?

Algebraic models of marriage systems have been in use for nearly fifty years. These models continue to be a matter of controversy. Most anthropologists have found algebraic models abstract and unnecessary. Mathematical scientists have tended to consider the value of these models self-evident. I argue here that the anthropologists have been in large correct, and that the crux of the matter comes down to the question of what constitutes a mathematical model. Different mathematical cultures answer this question in different ways. Although there is some formal mathematical content to this note, it is written with the intent that the non-mathematical reader can easily absorb the gist. What is a Mathematical Model?
