Alfred Weber and Subsequent Developments in Industrial Location Theory
(http://faculty.washington.edu/krumme/450/weber.html)
  • Why are we interested in Weberian Triangles? Objectives of deriving Weberian principles and least-cost location theory.
  • Setting up the theoretical model: the constraints (assumptions)
  • the "objective function" for this "normative" model
  • starting with transport cost minimization
  • overall cost minimization
  • profit maximization
  • Assumptions related to organization and, importantly, to production process and production function [the initial Weber model is based on linear production relations with no scale economies and no input substitution; "Leontief-type production function".
  • Assumptions related to inputs used in the production process
    • Inputs are available in unlimited supply at given (fixed) prices independent of location
    • These material inputs are either localized at a limited number of locations or ubiquitously available ( = everywhere).
    • "pure" versus weight-losing materials
    • competitive price formation on markets for inputs (input prices are independent of production levels)
  • Assumptions related to markets
    • Demand is fixed and concentrated at a limited number of (known) locations (points)
    • competitive price formation (given prices at market, i.e. prices are independent of production levels)

He and his wife became apologists for Stalinism in the 1930s. Weber, Max (1864-1920) In his famous The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism published in 1905, Weber attributed the success of German capitalism to the psychological consequences of Calvinism. However, when the Protestant morality that he had come to accept as inescapable destiny came under attack from young avant-garde During this period, Weber promoted the need for social theory to adopt a value-free methodology, and he engaged himself in comparative studies of Eastern religions with those of Christian Europe. The German Historical School
The German Historical School may not have known it was a "school" before it became involved in the long Methodenstreit with Carl Menger and the Austrian School at the end of the 19th Century. However, it always knew its economics was distinctly different from that practised in the Classical Anglo-Saxon world of Ricardo and Mill . Its flavor, as its name indicates, was "historical" and thus relied much on empirical and inductive reasoning. Its roots were in Hegelian philosophy and the romantic/nationalist critiques of abstract theory by List and Müller . Its kinship across the English Channel lay not with the Classical but rather with the English Historical School. The early methodological principles of the Historical school were laid down by Wilhelm Roscher . Following Hegel , Roscher disparaged the idea of universal theoretical systems - arguing that economic behavior and thus economic "laws" were contingent upon their historical, social and institutional context. To derive any economic "laws", the he argued, the method is thus inevitably cross-disciplinary: one must look at economic life with the eye of a historian and sociologist, as well as an economist. Hence the first task would be essentially that of combing through history for economic details in order to arrive at some idea of what this relationship between the social and economic organization of society might be. As a result, much of the work of the

    Ernst, Wilhelm, and Eduard Weber
    W. Bruce Fye, M.D., M.A. Department of Cardiology, Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield, Wisconsin, USA They were born in Wittenberg, Germany (about 60 miles southwest of Berlin), into a family of 12 children. Ernst Weber, the oldest of the brothers, studied medicine at the Universities of Wittenberg and Leipzig. He spent his career at the University of Leipzig where his research and teaching focused initially on anatomy and comparative anatomy. Appointed to the Chair of Anatomy at the ancient university in 1821, Ernst also held the Chair of Physiology there beginning in 1840. When Carl Ludwig created his unique physiologic institute at Leipzig in 1865, Ernst gave up the Chair of Physiology and retired six years later. Wilhelm Weber received his medical degree from the University of Halle in 1826. The Weber brothers began their academic careers in this fertile intellectual context. In 1821, Ernst launched a series of experiments on the physics of fluids. His younger brother Wilhelm, just 18 years old at the time, assisted him in these pioneering investigations. Their sophisticated research resulted in the publication in 1825 of

Weber, Max Wilhelm Carl (Germany-Netherlands 1852-1937)
    zoology, field biology
Not to be confused with his more famous namesake, the sociologist, Max Weber the zoologist forged a considerable reputation for himself as an expedition organizer and descriptive biologist. Weber's great skill as a comparative morphologist was well-served by his associations with the zoological garden and museum in Amsterdam, as he was thus able to secure a regular stream of deceased exotic specimens for examination. At the same time, he was an outstanding field biologist and collector, and is still remembered for his productive expeditions to the Dutch East Indies. During these he developed well-thought out ideas on the region's biogeography, taking an especial interest in the unusual circumstances of the great island of Sulawesi (Celebes). Weber's most important publication, 1904's , remained a standard text on the systematics and anatomy of mammals through much of the twentieth century; he also left behind an enviable legacy as a model teacher and professional scientist.
