Friedrich Wilhelm Weber
Physician, member of the Prussian House of Deputies, and poet, born at Alhausen, near Driburg, in Westphalia, 25 December, 1813; died at Nieheim, 5 April, 1894. His father was forester for the Count of Asseburg. Weber first attended the village school, then when thirteen years old he went to the gymnasium at Paderborn There are three biographers of Weber; the two smaller ones are: KEITER, Friedr. W. Weber, der Dichter von Dreizehnlinden (1884); HOEBER, Friedr. W. Weber, sein leben u. sein Dichtungen (1894); the larger one is: SCHWERING, Friedr. W. Weber, sein Leben u. sein Werke (1900), it gives all necessary bibliography in the notes. The best commentary of Dreizehnlinden is a literary study by TIBESAR (1895). N. SCHEID

Wilhelm Weber entered the University of Halle in 1822 and wrote his doctoral dissertation in 1826. After that he taught at Halle. Gauss . Weber developed sensitive magnetometers and other magnetic instruments during this time. Dirichlet became temporary directors of the astronomical observatory there. His work on the ratio between the electrodynamic and electrostatic units of charge in 1855 proved extremely important and was crucial to Maxwell in his electromagnetic theory of light. Weber found the ratio was 3.1074 m/sec but failed to take any notice of the fact that this was close to the speed of light. Weber, Wilhelm (1804-1891)

German physicist who devised a logical system of units for electricity Weber wanted to unify electricity and magnetism into a fundamental force law. He modified the central force concepts which pervaded physics in Elektrodynamische Massenbestimmungen (Electrodynamical Measurements), (1846) by presenting a force law which was dependent on velocity and acceleration Weber also linked the force between atoms to the their potential energy Weber worked with Gauss in measuring magnetic strength. He conceived of current as the flow of electrons and was much more interested in discovering mathematical formulas than in trying to understand the physics. He also invented the electrodynamometer an instrument for measuring small currents

Weber, Wilhelm Eduard German physicist who studied magnetism and electricity. Working with mathematician Karl Gauss, he made sensitive magnetometers to measure magnetic fields, and instruments to measure direct and alternating currents. He also built an electric telegraph. The SI unit of magnetic flux, the weber, is named after him.
Weber defined an electromagnetic unit for electric current which was applied to measurements of current made by the deflection of the magnetic needle of a galvanometer. In 1846, he developed the electrodynamometer, in which a current causes a coil suspended within another coil to turn when a current is passed through both. In 1852, Weber defined the absolute unit of electrical resistance.
Weber put forward in 1871 the view that atoms contain positive charges that are surrounded by rotating negative particles and that the application of an electric potential to a conductor causes the negative particles to migrate from one atom to another. He also provided similar explanations of thermal conduction and thermoelectricity.

Wilhelm Eduard Weber
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Wilhelm Eduard Weber Wilhelm Eduard Weber ( October 24 June 23 ) was a noted physicist He was born in Wittenberg , where his father, Michael Weber, was professor of theology. William was the second of three brothers, all of whom were distinguished by an aptitude for the study of science. After the dissolution of the University of Wittenberg his father was transferred to Halle in . William had received his first lessons from his father, but was now sent to the Orphan Asylum and Grammar School at Halle. After that he entered the University, and devoted himself to natural philosophy. He distinguished himself so much in his classes, and by original work, that after taking his degree of Doctor and becoming a Privatdozent he was appointed Professor Extraordinary of natural philosophy at Halle. In , on the recommendation of Gauss , he was called to G¶ttingen as professor of physics, although but twenty-seven years of age. His lectures were interesting, instructive, and suggestive. Weber thought that, in order to thoroughly understand physics and apply it to daily life, mere lectures, though illustrated by experiments, were insufficient, and he encouraged his students to experiment themselves, free of charge, in the college laboratory. As a student of twenty years he, with his brother
