Watson, Rodger Henry (1910 - 1999)
FAIAS, FASAP Archival/Heritage Sources Published Sources Agricultural scientist Born: 22 February 1910 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Died: 21 April 1999 Victoria, Australia. Rodger Henry Watson was a world leader in animal science and made major contributions to the fields of ruminant nutrition, reproduction and neo-natal mortality of lambs. Watson was President of the World Association for Animal Production from 1968 to 1973. Career Highlights Graduating from the University of Queensland with first-class honours in Agriculture, Rodger Henry Watson was awarded a Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) studentship. This allowed him to train at the Sir William Dunn Institute of Biochemistry (University of Cambridge) and at the Institute of Physiology at Gottingen, Germany. He returned to Australia in 1936 and soon took up a post at the McMaster Animal Health Laboratory in Sydney. There he worked on the physiology of digestion in ruminants. To further his research in this field, Watson moved to CSIR’s Adelaide Animal Nutrition Laboratory. In 1943 Rodger Watson was seconded from CSIR to become Officer-in-charge at Melbourne’s Central Wool Testing House. Three years later he transferred to the nearby Animal Health Laboratory which was run by CSIR (subsequently CSIRO – Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation). His work there, which concentrated on the reproductivity of ewes and neo-natal mortality in lambs, had a major influence on the sheep industry world-wide.

From Keith Kyle In characterising Labour ministers' ability to provide a 'thousand reasons why the Upper House cannot possibly be elected' as 'a failure of imagination, nerve and democratic politics', Ross McKibbin ( LRB , 5 July ) does not come to grips with the real problem of a revising chamber. If the House of Lords is to be elected, it will either have to be by the same method as the House of Commons or by a different one, presumably some form of proportional representation. In the case of the former, the result would merely be another Labour landslide; in the case of the latter, you would get an Upper Chamber with a greater claim to democratic legitimacy than the Commons - a prescription for gridlock. Then there is the question of the type of people who would seek and obtain election. They would probably closely resemble the type of people - an increasingly limited group - who seek election to the House of Commons, when what is wanted is a wide range of expertise and experience. Almost all of the candidates would belong to political parties. The Martin Bells would be as much an endangered species in the one chamber as in the other. What we now have is virtually a one-chamber legislature and that chamber is the House of Lords. This is the only place in which the Government is uncertain of being able to carry its legislation as (often poorly) drafted. It is the only place in which its periodic assaults on the liberties of the subject have sometimes been repelled.

An increasingly alarmed watson and Sir henry stalk a prowler who As watson and Sir henry give chase, they hear the eerie howling of a distant hound.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/hound/synopsis.html
Story Synopsis
One morning, Dr. James Mortimer pays a visit to consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson at 221B Baker Street. Mortimer is concerned by the mysterious death of his old friend Sir Charles Baskerville, which local folk attribute to the 200-year-old family curse: a gigantic phantom hound, a monstrous black beast with dripping jaws and glowing eyes reputed to have savaged his ancestors to death. Sir Charles lived in fear of the legend and died with a look of abject terror on his face. There was evidence of a desperate dash for safety, but far more frightening were the distinct footprints of an enormous hound close to the corpse.
Mortimer is also afraid for the new heir, Sir Henry Baskerville, who has been located in Canada and is coming to claim his inheritance. From the moment he arrives in London, odd things start to happen. Two of his boots go missing, anonymous warnings are delivered to his hotel and a bearded man is following him. It is beginning to look as if Sir Henry's life may be in danger too.
Sir Henry is about to take up residence at his ancestral home, Baskerville Hall on Dartmoor. Unable to leave London for the present, Holmes sends Watson down to Devon as his agent, with instructions to keep him fully informed of events, however trivial. The men have learned that a violent convict has escaped from the nearby prison and is still missing upon the moor. At Baskerville Hall, Watson encounters the bearded butler Barrymore and his wife, while the sound of a woman sobbing and the creak of aged floorboards rob him of his sleep.

The Lawgiver of English Usage
Henry Watson Fowler The King's English , was published by the Oxford University Press and quickly became a de facto standard. Exposing the shortcomings of eminent writers, the tome offering but five basic commandments: 1. Prefer the familiar word to the far-fetched.
2. Prefer the concrete to the abstract.
3. Prefer the single word to the circumlocution.
4. Prefer the short word to the long.
5. Prefer the Saxon word to the Romance.
The majority of "Old English" words are lost to modern usage and have no descendants. Of the small core of survivors, most are readily familiar and seldom have abstract meanings. The roots are typically short and often contain a single syllable. Some have taken on meanings only indirectly related to those in Saxon times. And, others are downright awkward in contemporary usage. Fowler addressed these point in A Dictionary of Modern English Usage , first published in 1926 and still in print. He warns that: This lexicon of Modern English words contains many of those Saxon words that Fowler would have us prefer. May it - along with Fowler's sage advise - lead to a
