Biography John Wallis was born at Ashford on November 22, 1616, and died at Oxford on October 28, 1703. He was educated at Felstead school, and one day in his holidays, when fifteen years old, he happened to see a book of arithmetic in the hands of his brother; struck with curiosity at the odd signs and symbols in it he borrowed the book, and in a fortnight, with his brother's help, had mastered the subject. As it was intended that he should be a doctor, he was sent to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, while there he kept an ``act'' on the doctrine of the circulation of the blood; that was said to have been the first occasion in Europe on which this theory was publicly maintained in a disputation. His interests, however, centred on mathematics.
In 1655 Wallis published a treatise on conic sections in which they were defined analytically. I have already mentioned that the G©om©trie of Descartes is both difficult and obscure, and to many of his contemporaries, to whom the method was new, it must have been incomprehensible. This work did something to make the method intelligible to all mathematicians: it is the earliest book in which these curves are considered and defined as curves of the second degree.
The most important of Wallis's works was his Arithmetica Infinitorum, which was publishd in 1656. In this treatise the methods of analysis of Descartes and Cavalieri were systematised and greatly extended, but their logical exposition is open to criticism. It at once became the standard book on the subject, and is constantly referred to by subsequent writers. It is prefaced by a short tract on conic sections.

Wallis, John
English mathematician and cleric who made important contributions to the development of algebra and analytical geometry. He was one of the founders of the Royal Society.
Wallis was born in Ashford, Kent, and studied at Cambridge. In 1640 he was ordained in the Church of England. He moved to London 1645 and assisted the Parliamentary side by deciphering captured coded letters during the Civil War. From 1649 he was professor of geometry at Oxford, and in 1658 he was appointed keeper of the university archives. In 1660 Charles II chose him as his royal chaplain. After the revolution of 1688-89, which drove James II from the throne, Wallis was employed by William III as a decipherer.
Wallis also conducted experiments in speech and attempted to teach, with some success, congenitally deaf people to speak. His method was described in his Grammatica linguae anglicanae 1652.
Wallis's Arithmetica infinitorum 1655 was the most substantial single work on mathematics yet to appear in England. It introduced the symbol to represent infinity, the germ of the differential calculus, and, by an impressive use of interpolation (the word was Wallis's invention), the value for . His Mechanica 1669-71 was the fullest treatment of the subject then existing, and his Algebra 1685 introduced the principles of analogy and continuity into mathematics.

Dr. John Wallis:
The Origin of The Royal Society, 1645-1662
From Account of Some Passages of his Life About the year 1645, while I lived in London (at a time when, by our civil wars, academical studies were much interrupted in both our Universities), beside the conversation of divers eminent divines, as to matters theological, I had the opportunity of being acquainted with divers worthy persons, inquisitive into natural philosophy, and other parts of human learning; and particularly of what has been called the New Philosophy , or Experimental Philosophy . We did by agreements, divers of us, meet weekly in London on a certain day, to treat and discourse of such affairs; of which number were Dr. John Wilkins (afterward Bishop of Chester Dr. Jonathan Goddard, Dr. George Ent, Dr. Glisson, Dr. Merret (Drs. in Physic), Mr. Samuel Foster , then Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College, Mr. Theodore Hank (a German of the Palatinate, and then resident in London, who, I think, gave the first occasion, and first suggested those meetings), and many others. These meetings we held sometimes at Dr. Goddard's

ORIGINS OF MODERNITY
mathematics
Wallis, John (1616-1703)
Tractatus duo.
Oxoniae : Typis Academicis Lichfeldianis, 1659.
This work includes Wallis' analysis of two curves, the cycloid and the cissoid, which were objects of intense study in the early modern period. The cycloid, originally named by Galileo, is the locus of a point on the rim of a circle of radius a rolling along a straight line. The cissoid was a curve invented by Diocles circa 180BC which was often used in attempts to duplicate the cube using geometric methods.

Wallis Posthumously Settles a Squabble WALLIS, John A Treatise concerning St. Matthias Day, Misplaced in the Oxford Almanack for the Year 1684 (being Leap-Year) at Feb. 24. In a Letter from Dr. Wallis to Dr. John Fell late Lord Bishop of Oxford. Published from the Original Manuscript in the Savilian Study. Oxford: 1719. 3 p.l., 28 pp. 8vo, cont. calf (well-rebacked), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Oxford: 1719. First edition of this very scarce posthumously published work. We learn from the Preface that there was considerable debate within the Oxford community regarding keeping St. Matthias's Day on the 24th or 25th of February in leap years. Wallis's text, from a manuscript written in 1684, was published to add support for the 24th as the preferable day. Fine copy. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Jonathan A.
