William Wallace 's parents were Janet Simson and Alexander Wallace who was a leather manufacturer. Alexander taught his son William basic arithmetic but William had no formal schooling after the age of eleven. He was brought up in Dysart until he was 16 years old, working there as an apprentice bookbinder, then in 1784 his family moved to Edinburgh. There he taught himself mathematics, earning his living working for a bookseller and also tutoring mathematics privately. Although he was not a student, Wallace did attend mathematics classes at Edinburgh University and both Robison and Playfair encouraged the young man who they realised had very considerable mathematical talents. Wallace became a mathematics teacher at Perth Academy in 1794 and he married in the same year; the marriage produced three daughters and a son. At this time Wallace began to publish mathematics and his first paper appeared in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1796. He also began writing articles for

In his earlier years Wallace was an occasional contributor to Leybourne's Mathematical Repository and the Gentleman's Mathematical Companion. Between 1801 and 1810 he contributed articles on " Algebra," " Conic Sections," " Trigonometry," and several others in mathematical and physical science to the fourth edition of the Encyclopaedia , and some of these were retained in subsequent editions from the fifth to the eighth inclusive. He was also the author of the principal mathematical articles in the Edinburgh Encyclopaedia, edited by David Brewster (1808-1830). He also contributed many important papers to the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. See Transactions of the Roy. Ast. Soc., 1844. His principal works were The Logic of Hegel (1873), which contains a translation of the Encyklopadie with an introduction, a second edition of which, with a volume entitled Prolegomena, appeared in 1892; Epicureanism (1880); Kant (Blackwood's Philosophical Classics, 1882); Life of Arthur Schopenhauer (1890); Hegel's Philosophy of Mind (translated from the Encyklopadie, with five introductory essays); Lectures and Essays on Natural Theology and Ethics, being a selection from his papers edited with a biographical introduction by Edward Caird. He wrote several important articles for the gth edition of the Ency. Brit., which, with some revision, have been repeated in the present work.

Few pages on this web site have provoked as much email traffic as this one and it is, perhaps, not a surprise. Many people feel very passionately about the legend of William Wallace and have done so for hundreds of years. It is worthwhile, however, to not confuse the legend with facts. Legends are, by definition, not necessarily fact. Although these data have been compiled from many sources usually deemed reliable, no sources or references are provided because no guarantee of scholarly accuracy is offered. For all I know, the entire article may be inaccurate. If your researches reveal differing results, it is perhaps not surprising. While I will be happy to receive your updated data, and will even consider posting it, I will neither defend nor argue about the content of this article, nor will I cite information sources. That being said, I hope you enjoy this page. Webmaster During this time Wallace was in the habit of visiting the garrisoned towns in disguise to see for himself the strength and condition of the enemy. During these visits he had various personal encounters with English soldiers, frequently having to escape difficult situations where he was heavily outnumbered. His heroic exploits became legendary and following the heavy Scottish defeat at the Battle of Dunbar in 1296, he became the focus of hope for many Scots and to the sacred cause of national liberty. Among those who were drawn to the fame of The Wallace were Sir Andrew Moray of Bothwell, Sir William Douglas, Sir Robert

William Wallace Lincoln ("Willie") was born on December 21, 1850. He was the third son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln. Willie was named after Dr. William Wallace who had married Frances, one of Mary Todd's sisters. Willie was more like his dad than older brother Robert; he had the same magnetic personality of Abraham Lincoln. A 16 year old girl, Julia Taft, described Willie as "the most lovable boy I ever knew, bright, sensible, sweet-tempered and gentle-mannered."
In Springfield Willie attended a private school operated by Miss Corcoran. Like his folks, Willie loved learning. Willie developed lots of interests including writing poetry and drawing up railroad timetables. He had excellent natural ability in math. Additionally, Mary Todd said Willie was "a most peculiarly religious child." He was more studious than his younger brother, Tad.
In June of 1859 Willie went to Chicago with his father who had legal business in that city. Father and son stayed in the Tremont House. Willie wrote a letter to his friend, Henry Remann, about his wonderful experience. (The photographs of Willie are from the Chicago Historical Society).

*New Exhibition* The Wallace Monument was completed in 1869 on the back of a wave of nationalism then sweeping Europe, with expatriate Scots and international figures contributing towards its construction. A new exhibition tells the fascinating story behind the building of the monument, including the fund-raising campaign, the design competition, and the building and opening of what has become a national landmark. 220 feet (67m) high, this Victorian Gothic tower was opened in 1869 to commemorate Scotland's greatest freedom fighter, Sir William Wallace (1267-1305). It was funded by public subscription, and donations poured in from expatriate Scots around the world. Support came from many European leaders, including the Italian patriot, Garibaldi. In 1296, Edward I of England invaded Scotland and the Scottish Wars of Independence began. William Wallace began a guerrilla campaign against the English and became known as the hammer and scourge of the English. On 11th september, 1297, the Scots defeated the English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge.

wallace, william G 1996 State University of New York at Stony Brook (USA), 153 pp.greybar.jpg 2645 Bytes. The acclimation and adaptation to cadmium (Cd)

Acclimation and Adaptation to Pollutants:Effects on Metal Trophic Transfer
Wallace, William G 1996
State University of New York at Stony Brook (USA), 153 pp.
Acclimation to Cd resulted in an increase in the proportion of Cd bound to the cytosol of oligochaetes (possibly due to the production of metallothionein-like proteins) and in the proportion of Cd biologically available to shrimp; Cd bound to cytosol was completely absorbed by shrimp. Oligochaetes chronically exposed to Cd evolved Cd resistance and produced Cd-rich granules. Cd sequestered in granules was biologically unavailable due to the insolubility of these concretions.
Shrimp fed Cd-contaminated prey items (LIMNODRILUS HOFFMEISTERI OR ARTEMIA SALINA) exhibited significant and obvious reductions in their ability to effectively capture live prey (A. SALINA). Just as with oligochaetes exposed to Cd via solution, the percentage of Cd bound in the cytosol of shrimp increased with increased Cd exposure; induction of Cd-binding proteins (metallothioneins) was directly responsible for this increase in cytosol bound Cd. Additionally, prey capture success was inversely related to (1) the percentage and amount of Cd bound in the cytosol of shrimp, (2) shrimp Cd body burdens, and (3) the amount of Cd bound to the high molecular weight protein fraction of shrimp cytosol (i.e., Cd not detoxified via metallothioneins).
This study has integrated physiological induction of metal detoxification systems, development of metal resistance, and effects on metal trophic transfer and toxicity to predators. This scheme represents the development of a physiological approach to understanding the impacts of metals on aquatic environments, and, together with previous work, describes a model linking molecular aspects of metal resistance in prey to direct consequences to predators, and by extension to the ecosystem as a whole. This model extends beyond Cd, oligochaetes and grass shrimp to include other predator/prey relationships in which other toxic metals (i.e., Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, Cr, Ag and Hg) are sequestered and detoxified by similar mechanisms.
