John Walker Lindh: The route to courtroom
In his first court appearance since his capture in December, American John Walker Lindh, who fought with the Taliban in Afghanistan, said he understood that he was charged with conspiring to kill Americans. The punishment for the charges could include life in prison. Here are events that led to his capture and return to the United States to face charges. November 2000 Begins school in Pakistan to study Islam and the Arabic language. April 26, 2001 Last contact with family, who live in California, until his capture. May 15, 2001 Leaves the school to travel to Pakistan's mountains. Lindh is treated in an Afghan hospital after being found. November 25, 2001 Captured by anti-Taliban forces. Questioned by CIA agent Johnny "Mike" Spann and another agent at fortress that became the scene of a prison uprising later in the day. Spann is killed in the uprising. Walker Lindh is wounded and takes refuge in a basement. December 2, 2001 Found by Northern Alliance fighters and taken into U.S. custody.

War against terror VICTORVILLE, California (AP) John Walker Lindh, the American serving a 20-year sentence for helping the Taliban, has been transferred to a federal prison in this desert community northeast of Los Angeles. Lindh, 21, arrived at the medium-security Federal Correctional Institution in Victorville on Saturday, under guard by federal marshals, authorities said. He had been held at a federal lockup in Virginia. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison last October after pleading guilty to supplying services to the Taliban during the war in Afghanistan and carrying explosives in commission of a felony. At the prison on the former George Air Force Base he will be housed with 1,656 other inmates, said Traci Billingsley, a U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman. "Typically the inmates are double bunked, with just a writing surface and lockers in their cell," Billingsley said. "Most inmates are required to work during the day, in food service, plumbing, groundskeeping or painting, something like that."

Mary Walker/John Burnside descendants
(There is a reference in this post to a slave named Lucy.) To descendants of Mary Walker and John Burnside of Pocahontas County., WV: Identifying the parents of Mary (Walker) Burnside has had me stumped for many years. There are so many Walkers, especially in Rockbridge County, that it seemed impossible to sort them out. Too many Marys, Johns and Alexanders! Emma Siggins White's book on the Wigton Walkers (mostly of Rockbridge County) does not identify her as near as I can tell. Jewell Simmons, a Walker/Burnside researcher, some time ago submitted Mary Walker's name to the LDS records as the daughter of Alexander Walker and Jane Hammer, but I have thought for many years that she was in error because of the dates of birth of Mary's children. I believe now that Mary was the daughter of Alexander Walker who built his plantation on Little Run near the present town of Mt. Meridian, Augusta County, VA. Alexander Walker's plantation, his family and descendants and a little of his history is found in the book, My Augusta A Spot of Earth, Not a Woman by C.E. May, 1987. Alexander is in Augusta County as early as 1748, is granted a patent on 400 acres in 1760, had several children, and died testate in 1775, leaving his plantation to his son, John. I have been unable to determine if this Alexander Walker is related to the Wigton Walkers of Rockbridge County, VA, but I would be very surprised if he was not, given the dates and locations of the families.

John Walker
Not much is known about this early pioneer of Kaufman County. From his tombstone we know when he was born and from census records know he was born in Kentucky, but do not know his parentage. He died in Kaufman County and lies buried in the Walker Family Cemetery with his wife and children. His tombstone reads: John Walker

Died
Dec 30, 1881
"Dear Father,
with a reverent hand
this to thy Memory given;
While one by one thy
Household band,
God reunites in Heaven" He was eulogized in the Kaufman Sun on Jan. 20, 1882 thus: "Mr. John Walker, on Legg Prairie, one of the oldest settlers of this county, died two or three weeks ago at the ripe old age of seventy-three years. Mr. Walker, some thirty years ago, with Uncle Charley Hare, of Johnson's Point, built the first ever erected in Kaufman. The old gentleman lived to see his adopted county grow and prosper until she had but few equals in the state and then like the brave, true and noble old gentleman that he was, he breathed his last in the bosom of his family. Date of Defense Availability unrestricted Abstract Diversity of ectotrophic mycorrhizal (EM) fungi on out-planted seedlings of two oak species (Quercus rubra and Q. prinus) was estimated at two sites in mature mixed forests in the southern Appalachian mountains. Late – stage fungi were well represented. Total richness was 73 types, with 42 types having a frequency of only one. Thelephoroid / tomentelloid, russuloid, and cortinarioid groups were the richest. Dominant fungi included a putative Tuber sp. and Craterellus sp., and Laccaria cf laccata. Diversity was lower at a high elevation chestnut oak dominated site compared to a lower mesic cove – hardwood forest site. There was little evidence for fungal specificity to red oak versus white oak seedlings. We also compared EM fungus distributions on root systems of oak seedlings from samples taken in mid-July and early-September. The majority of EM types occurred only in the mid- or late-summer samples respectively. Dramatic shifts in mycobiont dominance were observed in relation to sample date, including increases in Cortinarius spp. richness, decreases in Thelephoraceae richness, and the disappearance of Amanita spp. types in the late- compared to mid-summer samples. A multi-stage model of seasonal EM dynamics is proposed, with implications for the niche expansion of associated phytobionts. In this model, generalistic mycobionts are most frequent and occur throughout the season. Other more specialized fungi show seasonal specificity.
