HAWKINS, STEPHEN DWAYNE , was serving in 1985 as a Quartermaster Third Class at the Commander Submarine Group 8 in Naples, Italy. A visitor to his home off base in June reported seeing a classified message there. Interviews with Hawkins by NIS agents and a series of polygraphs that showed deception resulted in Hawkins confessing that he had taken at least 17 Secret messages home with him and was considering selling them to a hostile intelligence service. He was convicted at General Courts-Martial on 15 January 1986 of violating Article 92, wrongful removal of classified material and wrongful destruction of a classified message. He was sentenced to a dishonorable discharge, one year in prison, and reduction in grade to E-1.

46. Nanotechnology In Manufacturing
What Next? The Coming Revolution In Manufacturing Autodesk Technology Forum Presentation by john walker, May 10th, 1990. Somewhat dated but well worth reading.

Nanotechnology in Manufacturing
Ever since I read K. Eric Drexler's Engines of Creation I'd been interested in nanotechnology and followed the relevant literature while trying to figure out, as is my wont, how to make a buck out of it. As one of the designers of Xanadu and an ardent supporter of the project, Eric became acquainted with Autodesk when we invested in Xanadu in 1988. When Eric saw a demo of HyperChem at a conference, he immediately realised that the fit between Autodesk and Hypercube, Inc., developers of HyperChem, was potentially very good. When Eric and Chris Peterson spoke to me about this opportunity, I finally saw not only an opportunity for Autodesk to establish itself in the scientific modeling market, but also a way to position ourselves to benefit from the advent of nanotechnology, if and when it emerged, for surely one could not design atomically-precise structures without a molecular CAD system, which is precisely what a molecular modeling package is. In early 1989, I prepared this talk about the consequences of nanotechnology to help tilt the balance in favour of the HyperChem deal. The talk was delivered at the Autodesk technology forum on May 10, 1990, before an audience which included Eric Drexler, Chris Peterson, and Neil Ostlund, founder and president of HyperCube, the designer of HyperChem.

48. Cellular Automata Laboratory
An extendable DOS/Windows application for exploring cellular automata, accompanied by a thorough user guide; by Rudy Rucker and john walker.
http://www.fourmilab.ch/cellab/
by Rudy Rucker and John Walker
Introduction (from the User Guide
Cellular automata are self-generating computer graphics movies. The most important near-term application of cellular automata will be to commercial computer graphics; in five years you won't be able to watch television for an hour without seeing some kind of CA. Three other key applications of cellular automata will be to simulation of biological systems (artificial life), to simulation of physical phenomena (heat-flow and turbulence), and to the design of massively parallel computers. Most of the programs in the Rudy Rucker Cellular Automata Lab (CelLab) are two-dimensional cellular automata. In these programs the computer screen is divided up into "cells" which are colored rectangles or dots. Each cell is repeatedly "updated" by changing its old color to a new color. The net effect of the individual updates is that you see an ever-evolving sequence of screens. A graphics program of this nature is specifically called a cellular automaton when it is 1) parallel, 2) local, and 3) homogeneous. Parallelism means that the individual cell updates are performed independently of each other. That is, we think of all of the updates being done at once.

HName: Walker, John, III "Johnnie Walker" DateBorn: 1906 Placeborn: Pittsburgh, PA Datedied: 1995 Placedied: Amberley, West Sussex, United Kingdom summa cum laude Self-Portrait with Donors . Walker's many spectacular acquisitions included Rembrandt's Aristotle with the Bust of Homer , Fragonard's La Liseuse , El Greco's Laocoon , and the Ginevra de' Benci by Leonardo da Vinci bought in 1967 from the Prince of Liechtenstein. He made the selections from the Samuel Kress collection of Renaissance art bequest. Walker was also responsible for the planning of the gallery's east building expansion, designed by architect I M Pei and completed in 1978. In 1961, Walker took as his personal assistant the 25-year-old J. Carter Brown (q.v.), whose father, John Nicholas Brown, had been a fellow student with Walker's in Sachs' classes. Brown succeeded Walker in 1969 as Director and Walker assumed the title Director Emeritus. Walker and his wife settled in Sussex, in Amberley (near Arundel), England, and Fishers Island, New York, spending winters in Florida. In his retirement he authored monographs on James McNeill Whistler and John Constable. Walker was one of the few major museum directors with a strong career in art history (as opposed to politics, as his predecessor had, or development, as modern directors are drawn from). His writings on art drew the praise from Berenson, who was his principal mentor. Walker displayed Berenson's attitude that museums' successes lay in the quality of it collections as much as crowd pleasing. He took a conservative stance on cleaning of pictures, regarding aggressive cleaning as an act of vandalism. He was also forthright about his duty to curry favor for donations. ''In the United States,'' he wrote in his autobiography, ''it is axiomatic that the undertaker and the museum director arrive almost simultaneously.''

Fourth Edition, 1994
The Autodesk File chronicles the history of Autodesk, Inc. and its principal product, AutoCAD, through contemporary documents edited and annotated by Autodesk founder and former CEO John Walker . The book traces the company from the first glimmer of an idea in the minds of the founders, through start-up, initial public stock offering, and growth from a loose confederation of moonlighting individuals to a leader in the industry of computer aided design. The book is available in several different editions, suited for on- or off-line reading with various tools. Click on the titles of the section describing the edition you select to view it or download to your computer.

Harrison Walker Ellis Remembers John Hannah Gray
by George M. Apperson Harrison Walker Ellis John Hannah Gray EUTAW, ALABAMA, perhaps surprisingly, was the connection between Ellis and Gray, but they were now far separated in time and place, pursuing their ministerial callings with remarkable dedication. Ellis was still a slave when his remarkable intellect began to be recognized. The publicity prompted the Synod of Alabama and Mississippi to raise funds to purchase him, his wife Celia, and their children, Jerry and Martha. Cresswell, who asked $2500.00 for the four, thought he might die before the sale was concluded, so he proposed adding a codicil to his will, giving the Synod possession of Ellis when the money was in hand. He then accepted the funds that had already been contributed. Lectures on Theology Theology: Explained and Defended Human Nature in its Four-Fold State John Gray undoubtedly would have agreed. He led in the organization of the Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis in 1844, and among the charter members was an African American slave!

The Scotch-Irish in America
Their History, Traits, Institutions and Influences, Especially as Illustrated in the Early Settlers of Western Pennsylvania and their Descendants by
John Walker Dinsmore
Published by the Winona Publishing Company, Chicago, Illinois, 1906 FOREWORD John Walker Dinsmore San Jose, Cal. BLOOMINGTON, ILL., June 18th 1906. I have read with deep interest the advance sheets of "The Scotch-Irish in America", by Rev. Dr. John W. Dinsmore, my friend, and former pastor. It is in every respect an admirable book. Every man who has a drop of Scotch-Irish blood in his veins will be profoundly interested in its perusal. Dr. Dinsmore knows whereof he writes. Nothing the book contains is matter of hearsay to him. The people described are those among whom he was reared-his neighbors and friends; the incidents mentioned, those of which he was the witness in his early life. The congregation so graphically described is the type of thousands of others scattered throughout this broad land. In this book we live again in the old days and fashions of our fathers and much that should never have been forgotten is vividly recalled. Dr. Dinsmore has rendered a valuable service in this clear-cut presentation of the good old times and customs home life and church life of the generation of which but few remain. Young and old alike will find pleasure and profit in the perusal of this book.

  • About this Edition
This Web edition of The War of the Worlds was prepared in June of 1995 by John Walker . It is based on the Project Gutenberg electronic text (etext) edition, warw11.txt which I obtained from the mirror archive then maintained by L'Association des bibliophiles Universels where you will also find a wide variety of French language public domain texts. Legal notice: This document is in the public domain and may be distributed and used without any restrictions or royalties whatsoever. It is not being distributed under the Project Gutenberg trademark, and Project Gutenberg bears no responsibility or liability resulting from use of this document. (This statement is included pursuant to the "small print" at the start of the original document.) The original ASCII etext was produced by Michael Oltz at Cornell University . Having created an etext and Web edition of Jules Verne's De la Terre à la Lune myself, I'm well aware that 99.9% of the effort goes into producing the original ASCII document; from there to the Web isn't much work at all. It's only because Mr. Oltz contributed the many hours it takes to scan and proofread the original text that you can enjoy it here. Thank you!

    A.Walker’s Guide: Land’s End to John o’Groats.
The impersonators have had their say. Now it's time for the real A.Walker to speak: So, you ant to walk the length of the country do you? Well if you think you can just do it next week, think again. The more time you have to plan your adventure of a lifetime, the better, and it will only add to the excitement. It's about 874 miles as the crow flies, and that would involve swimming (I walked 1086 miles). There are lots of things to bear in mind, so in no particular order, here goes. First Questions

    First Questions
There are a few major questions that you need to answer before going too far:
    • Are you going South to North, or North to South? John o'Groats is probably a better place to finish, but things to bear in mind are: the prevailing wind (Southwesterly); the tourist season; the midge season; the grouse shooting season; Long Distance Trail books going South-North; leaving larger mountains in Scotland until your fitter, etc.
    • Will you go alone, or with someone else? Do you know anyone you could put up with for 24 hours a day, for 10 weeks, through thick and thin, or would you get lonely? What happens if one of you sprains an ankle after 200 miles?
