March 1995 It's an Ill Wind
Blowing Some Good By Sally Pobojewski Nobody has anything good to say about smog. It burns our eyes, hurts our lungs, kills plants, acidifies lakes and spoils the view. Environmental activists and government officials have spent millions of dollars and written reams of legislation in an attempt to get rid of the stuff. According to U-M atmospheric scientist and geologist James C. G. Walker , however, the blanket of air pollution that hangs over much of the industrialized world has a benevolent side. He says it could be protecting us from the full impact of other serious environmental threats, such as global warming and depletion of the ozone layer. A Boon of Bad Air "Bad air does have its benefits," says Walker, the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences "But by masking the effects of other environmental problems, it may be lulling us into an unmerited complacency. Environmental damage may already be worse than we think." A specialist in global change issues, Walker's laboratory is the Earth itself. He's interested in how human activities-particularly the widespread burning of fossil fuels like oil, natural gas and coal-are changing the global ecosystem in fundamental ways that scientists do not fully understand. One of the more publicized and controversial changes is global warming . When we humans burn fossil fuels to run cars or power plants and factories, tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases rise into the atmosphere and remain there for hundreds of years. Although not as visible as the smoggy haze of air pollution, greenhouse gases are just as dangerous. Like the plastic cover on a greenhouse, they trap heat near the Earth's surface and prevent it from radiating into space. With no way to escape, the heat builds up and our planet gets warmer.

Elkanah (1805-1877) and Mary Richardson (1811-1897) Walker were one of six missionary couples (plus one single man) sent by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to the Oregon Mission. The Walkers and one other couple, Cushing and Myra Eells, established the mission at Tshimakain, near the present day town of Ford, Washington, to work with the Spokane Indians.
The Walkers were joined on their journey by three other couples-Rev. and Mrs. Cushing Eells; Rev. and Mrs. Asa B. Smith; and Mr. and Mrs. William H. Gray-all appointees of the American Board-to the already established mission at Waiilatpu, near present-day Walla Walla, Washington. Rev. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman and Rev. Henry and Eliza Spalding had established the mission there. A single man-Andrew Rodgers-joined the party en route and accompanied them. The Walkers and the Eells established the mission at Tshimakain the following year (1838).
Both of the Walkers, but particularly Mary Richardson Walker, wrote extensively in their dairies. These dairies provide great detail into the physical, psychological and spiritual endeavors of missionary service in the primitive days of the Pacific Northwest. Much about the Walkers and the activities of the Oregon Mission have been researched and reported by Clifford M. Drury, through his books, articles and research papers.
The American Board closed Tshimakain after nine years (1838-1848), along with the entire Oregon Mission, as a result of the Whitman Massacre.

WALKER NAMED ARTHUR ASHE JR. SCHOLAR ATHLETE
CALDWELL, N.J. - Like most student-athletes, sophomore soccer player Miguel Walker (St. Catherine, Jamaica) has a busy schedule. Along with his responsibilities as a full-time student and a member of the Caldwell College men’s soccer team, Walker serves as the president of Caldwell’s International Student Organization (ISO), tutors other students in the writing lab as well as in philosophy and economics, and gives tours to prospective students through the Office of Admissions. And on days when his schedule becomes a bit lighter, namely weekends and holidays, Walker works in maintenance on the campus. What sets Walker apart from most student-athletes, besides his hectic schedule, is that in spite of all of the activities and responsibilities that he has on his plate, Walker has maintained a 3.95 grade-point average as a financial economics major, earning a spot on the Dean’s List three times. For his excellence in the classroom and on the soccer field, Walker has been named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Athlete by Black Issues in Higher Education. He is one of nine men’s soccer players in the nation, regardless of division, to be selected to the first team. The Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Athlete Award was created to honor student-athletes of color who achieve athletically and academically while contributing to the community and on campus. The award is named after the late world-renowned tennis player who became an activist for civil rights around the world after his playing career ended. Walker recalls reading about Ashe in the book

Work in progress with Jeremy Long: an edited and annotated edition of Diary Walker Bros Prospecting Expedition 1913 The two brothers Christopher Henry and Arthur Charles Walker travelled with Commonwealth Government camels from Alice Springs to Meekatharra (Ryan's Well to Wiluna) in 1913, along with Arthur Edward Crofts (d. 1 January 1949, Perth) and Andy Everett (d. 8 November 1978, Meekatharra). The elder brother, Chris, wrote up a journal at the end of the trip. The Perth Daily News serialised the WA part of the journal every Saturday in the Goldfields Section between 1 December 1934 and 23 February 1935. We've studied Walker's journal and his maps, and we have travelled (with Aboriginal people) along parts of their route, in the NT-WA border areas and a section of the Gibson Desert. Our aim is to put together a book about the expedition, as it hasn't received the recognition we think it deserves. We've tried to contact the family of any of the people involved. We don't know of any living Walker family; the younger brother Arthur Charles Walker died at Nedlands (Perth) in May 1951.

George Walker At Suez
by Anthony Trollope
Of all the spots on the world's surface that I, George Walker, of Friday Street, London, have ever visited, Suez in Egypt, at the head of the Red Sea, is by far the vilest, the most unpleasant, and the least interesting. There are no women there, no water, and no vegetation. It is surrounded, and indeed often filled, by a world of sand. A scorching sun is always overhead; and one is domiciled in a huge cavernous hotel, which seems to have been made purposely destitute of all the comforts of civilised life. Nevertheless, in looking back upon the week of my life which I spent there I always enjoy a certain sort of triumph; or rather, upon one day of that week, which lends a sort of halo not only to my sojourn at Suez, but to the whole period of my residence in Egypt. I am free to confess that I am not a great man, and that, at any rate in the earlier part of my career, I had a hankering after the homage which is paid to greatness. I would fain have been a popular orator, feeding myself on the incense tendered to me by thousands; or failing that, a man born to power, whom those around him were compelled to respect, and perhaps to fear. I am not ashamed to acknowledge this, and I believe that most of my neighbours in Friday Street would own as much were they as candid and open-hearted as myself.

Walker, Ethel (1861-1951) Dame Ethel Walker produced her major paintings late in life, from the time she was in her fifties until her death at the age of ninety. Well-known during her lifetime and named a Dame of the British Empire in 1943, Walker is no longer considered a major artist. Although many of her paintings belong to the collections of British galleries, today they are rarely exhibited and scholars seldom mention them. Sponsor Message.
Walker's works may have fallen out of favor because of her identification with the Impressionist movement, in which she never achieved eminence. Walker was born in Edinburgh on June 9, 1861. Her Yorkshire father, Arthur Walker, was from a family of iron-founders, and her mother, Isabella Robertson, was Scottish. Walker received her secondary school education in Brondesbury, London, where her drawing master, Hector Caffieri, encouraged her to develop her artistic talent. After secondary school, Walker attended the Ridley School of Art. Nevertheless, she did not exhibit any special interest in art until she formed a close friendship with Clara Christian in the 1880s. The two women attended the Putney School of Art and then lived, studied, and worked together as fellow artists.
