Geoffrey Walker attended Watford Grammar School and from there, having won a mathematics scholarship in his final year, he entered Balliol College, Oxford. He received a First Class degree from Oxford in 1931, having specialised in differential geometry for which he won a special distinction. He remained at Merton College, supported by a Harmsworth scholarship during 1932-34 and he also held an Oxford University senior mathematics scholarship in 1933. In his final years at Oxford he was greatly influenced by Milne . Leaving Oxford, he then moved to Edinburgh to undertake research. After submitting his Ph.D. thesis to Edinburgh, Walker was examined by Eddington . After the award of his doctorate he was appointed as a lecturer in mathematics at Imperial College in London. This was a post for the academic year 1935-36 and after completing this temporary appointment he received his first permanent post as a lecturer in mathematics at Liverpool University. He was appointed in 1936 and was to remain in Liverpool until 1947 when he was offered the chair of mathematics at the University of Sheffield. In 1952, after five years in Sheffield, Walker was to return to Liverpool University, this time as Professor of Pure Mathematics. He held this post until he retired in 1974. However, the pressures of administration in this post restricted his time for research:-

John James Walker 's father, John Walker, was the headmaster of various schools. In fact Walker attended London High School, the school at which his father was then headmaster until his father moved to become headmaster of Plymouth New Grammar School. Walker completed his school education at Plymouth New Grammar School before entering Trinity College Dublin as an undergraduate. Although his father's family were originally from Yorkshire, several generations had lived in Ireland. His mother's family were English but Walker followed his father's family tradition in attending Trinity College Dublin. Walker's grandfather had been a fellow of Trinity and published classical texts as well as elementary mathematics and logic texts. Things were not entirely straightforward for Walker at Dublin for his family had ceased to be conformists so he was debarred from holding a scholarship. To add to his problems his father died young and Walker was left having little in the way of funds to see out his education. However he excelled at Trinity College, winning gold medals for both mathematics and physics as well as winning other distinctions.

BY SAMANTHA HUNT
[Read about Jules Bourglay and K. Veerabadran , other notable walkers in Samantha Hunt's series of non-fiction pieces.]
In 1969, Arthur Blessit heard Jesus Christ ask him to walk around the world, visiting every nation of every continent while carrying a twelve-foot-long cross. Blessit has been walking for thirty-three years. Blessit has even walked in Antarctica. He has visited the tiniest nations, the Vatican City and Sovereign Knights of Malta. He has crossed Africa and the United States on foot. He has climbed Mount Fuji (12,388 feet) and the Bronzal Pass, between Pakistan and Afghanistan (18,200 feet). He walked to the Dead Sea. He walked to Red Square. He walked to Orlando, Florida. Blessit once carried his wooden cross to meet the world's largest tree. The tree is in Mexico. It is 163-feet tall and 163-feet around. This tree is the largest, not the tallest. At Blessit's count his shoes last him approximately 500 miles, which means he has worn through 69.6 pairs of shoes since he began walking. Blessit has walked through forty-nine nations at war. These wars cause problems for Blessit, not just because they are wars, but because wars often result in the creation of a new country, or, at least, an old country with a new name. Should Blessit walk Burma again now that it is Myanmar? Zaire now that it is the Democratic Republic of Congo? Did Jesus mean Arthur should double back and walk Kosovo, Croatia, and Serbia even though he once walked Yugoslavia?

According to George E. Davis , the ideal chemical engineer could move from industry to industry, mixing and matching the various operations that the American Arthur D. Little (1863–1935) was later to call "unit operations." Little first used this term in a 1915 report to the president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where the curriculum in "chemical engineering" dated from 1888. The first degrees in this field in the United States were given at MIT in 1891, although the content of the original courses still centered on industrial chemistry and mechanical engineering, without the characteristic unit-operations laboratory. William H. Walker (1869–1934), Warren K. Lewis (1882–1975), and Little were among the leaders who defined chemical engineering as a separate profession with a distinct approach and training method. Little majored in chemistry at MIT before the advent of chemical engineering and was the editor of the college newspaper, The Tech In 1900 Little formed a new partnership with William H. Walker, a young MIT chemistry instructor who had graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and who held a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Göttingen. Walker was soon recalled to MIT to reform the chemical engineering curriculum—with Little in the background gaining approval and funds for various initiatives to bring industry and education closer together. In 1908 MIT's Research Laboratory of Applied Chemistry commenced operations. Here chemical engineering students worked on real industrial problems supplied by various chemical companies, who also supplied fellowships.
