Thompson Return To Site Contents Page The biographical list is separated into past and current scholars, and each part is in alphabetic order per last name. Part 1: Past Carl Bezold. (1859-1922). German assyriologist. He was born at Donauwörth in Bavaria in 1859 and died in Heidelberg (Germany) in 1922. He lived in London (England) from 1888 to 1895 whilst engaged in preparing a catalogue of the British Museum tablet collections. The end result was the Catalogue of the Cuneiform Tablets of the Kouyunjik Collection of the British Museum (5 Volumes, 1889-1899). This catalogue contains descriptions of approximately 14,500 tablets and fragments. His knowledge of assyriology was considered encyclopedic. He was proficient in numerous ancient and modern languages including Chinese, Assyrian, Arabic, Syriac, English, French, and Italian. From 1886 to 1915 he was the editor of Zeitschrift für Assyriologie . In 1894 he was appointed Professor of Semitic Philology and Director of Oriental Seminars at the University of Heidleberg. He held this prestigous academic position until his death. Bezold's 1911 pamphlet Astronomie, Himmelsschau und Astrallehre bei den Babylonie

Bartel Leendert van der Waerden
Born: 2 Feb 1903 in Amsterdam, Netherlands
Died: 12 Jan 1996 in Zurich, Switzerland
As a school pupil B L van der Waerden showed remarkable promise and he developed for himself the laws of trigonometry. He studied mathematics at the universities of Amsterdam and Göttingen from 1919 until 1925. The year 1924 he spent in Göttingen studying with Emmy Noether . His doctorate, supervised by Hendrik de Vries, was awarded by Amsterdam for a thesis on the foundations of algebraic geometry . In 1928 he received his habilitation from Göttingen. The year 1928 was a busy one for van der Waerden. He received a position at the University of Rostock but was appointed to a lectureship at Groningen in the same year. In 1931 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Leipzig where he became a colleague of Heisenberg Before and after World War II van der Waerden had problems as a foreigner from the Nazis. Although working in Germany he refused to give up his Dutch citizenship and his life was made difficult. After the War van der Waerden worked for Shell in Amsterdam in applied mathematics. In 1947 he visited the USA going to Johns Hopkins University. He returned in 1948 to a chair of mathematics at Amsterdam where he remained until 1951. In 1950 Karl Fueter

MATHEMATICAL COLORING BOOK:
Mathematics of Coloring
and The Colorful Life of Its Creators
by Alexander Soifer This book is dedicated to problems involving colored objects, and to results about existence of certain exciting and unexpected properties that occur regardless of how these objects (points in the plane, space, integers, real numbers, subsets, etc.) are colored. In mathematics these results comprise Ramsey Theory. The book will also include some problems that can be solved by inventing colorings, and results that prove the existence of certain colorings, most famous of the latter being, of course, The Four-Color Theorem. Most books in the field present mathematics as a flower, dried out between the pages of an old dusty volume, so dry that colors are faded and only theorem-proof narrative survives. Along with my previous books, Mathematical Coloring Book will strive to become a live account of a live area. I hope the book will present mathematics as a human endeavor: the reader should expect to find in it not only results, but also portraits of their creators; not only mathematical facts, but also open problems; not only new mathematical research, but also new historical investigations; not only mathematical aspirations, but also moral dilemmas of the times between and during the two World Wars of the twentieth century. Indeed, new facts and artifacts will be presented that are related to the history of the Chromatic Number of the Plane problem, the early history of Ramsey Theory, life of

arivero - Waerden's Dirac
Sakurai credits B. L. van der Waerden 1932 a pretty derivation of Dirac equation from two-component wave functions. First decompose E^2-p^2=m^2 as
This phi has two components, but it is a second order equation, so another two components are needed (say, the first derivative of phi) to fully specify a solution. Instead, we define
Now you see the trick. These are the usual left and right handed two-component spinors; if you define

Why have I started this thread here, instead of at the Quantum Mechanics subforum? Because it shows what is going on in the "non commutative geometry", or "discrete 5th dimension", models of elementary particles. Weyl spinors live in two parallell sheets of space-time, and the Dirac operator connects both sheets.

Now, I am intrigued by the following feature: the mass constant, m, does not to need to be the same when going from R to L that when going from L to R. Thus v. d. Waerden's equation seems to be a bit more general than Dirac's (EDITED: how general it is, has has been studied by Dvoeglazov (http://arxiv.org/abs/math-ph/0102001)). Moreover, we could want to treat us with two or three generations in the same multiplet, by generalising m to be a mass matrix M. Again, Waerden's seems to be more general than Dirac's. the history of mathematics, although I've leafed through many reviews of
his papers and books. However, right now the best I recall is a short but
juicy interview with Bartel L. van der Waerden (and his wife, Camilla)
by Yvonne Dold-Samplonius, held in Zu"rich in 1993, shortly after Bartel's

An excerpt follows:
Dold: When did you get interested in the history of mathematics?
vdW: When I was a student, when Hendrik de Vries gave a course on the history of mathematics. After that I read Euclid and some of Archimedes. Thus, my interest began very early. At Goettingen

    Thoughts on Ancient Egyptian Mathematics
    Kim R. W. Zahrt
    Communicated by: Dr. Micheal Kinyon
Department of Mathematics ABSTRACT Do the experts, Egyptomologist, know the true history of Egypt, and furthermore, are they sure of the level of Egyptian mathematical thought? This paper demonstrates two problems found on ancient papyri, and examines the words of scholars to determine the answer to the above questions. It has been said that Egyptian mathematics was only practical arithmetic and simple geometry. There are several scholars who contend Egyptians lacked formal proofs and stated rules, and therefore they lacked ``the scientific attitude of mind'' (Gillings 232). Thomas Eric Peet, a noted professor of Egyptology, refers to the table of fractions in the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus as being proof that the Egyptians did not reach a scientific understanding of mathematics (ibid). Concerning geometry, Bartel L. Van der Waerdan in Science Awakening II states ``The Egyptians of the Middle Kingdom had methods for calculating areas . . . but there is no textual evidence of a geometry with constructions and proofs. Furthermore . . . the mathematical texts were no longer copied after the Hyksos period'' (41). These and other scholars contend that the Egyptians did not have the rigor of mathematics, and the value of studying Egyptian mathematics lies only in its place as history. There are two prime sources which are considered the best examples of Egyptian mathematics. These are the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus and the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus. Several other sources exist such as the the Kahun Mathematical Fragments and the Mathematical Leather Roll at the British Museum, but these add nothing of substance to our knowledge of ancient Egyptian mathematics.
