The essays are arranged alphabetically by the women's best-known professional names. A better arrangement would have been by the periods within which the women worked; an approximation to that can be achieved by using the list in Appendix A of the included women ordered by birthdate. With its many appendices and its two good indexes, the bibliographic structure of this book is excellent. This together with its reviews of the work of many less-known women mathematicians makes it a valuable contribution to the history of mathematics.

Richard von Mises 19 April 14 July ) was a scientist who worked on fluid mechanics aerodynamics aeronautics statistics and probability theory He was born in Lemberg in Austria-Hungary (now Lviv Ukraine ), a younger brother of economist Ludwig von Mises . He studied at the Technical High School in Vienna, being awarded a doctorate in . During World War I he was an Austrian pilot and designed aircraft. In he was appointed to the new Institute of Applied Mathematics at the University of Berlin. He founded the journal Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik and became editor. Von Mises developed the Distortion energy theory of stress , which is one of the most important concepts used by engineers in material strength calculations. With the rise of the Nazi party to power in 1933, von Mises (who was a Roman Catholic but categorised as "non-Aryan" because of his Jewish ancestry) moved to Turkey , and then in to the United States , where he became a professor at Harvard University . Terror and Exile and a Letter About it by Michael Golomb
Michael Golomb
A report from Volume 4, #1 , of TopCom
On June 23 I had my weekly luncheon date with Leonard Lipschitz, first meeting him in my office. As usual, I had picked up my mail from my mailbox and I had just begun to look through it, when Leonard entered my office. Among the daily pieces of junk mail, solicitations from political and charity organizations, there was a large sheet with the word Telex in large boll letters in the center of it. I had never before seen a piece of telex and I was ready to drop it in the wastepaper basket, thinking it was another ad from a computer company, when Leonard stopped me and pointed to the top line on the sheet. I read "Der Regierende Buergermeister Von Berlin". I was puzzled, why would I receive mail from the office of the mayor of Berlin, but I was not curious enough to pursue this matter right now. But Leonard urged me to read on, it was important news. To my astonishment I read the following letter on the attached sheet: Sehr geehrter Herr Professor

Zmar³a : 22 marzec 1973, Santa Barbara, California, USA Ojciec Hildy Geiringer, Ludwig Geiringer urodzi³ siê na Wêgrzech. Jej matka, Martha Wertheimer pochodzi³a z Wiednia. Hilda urodzi³a siê 28 wrze¶nia 1893 roku w Wiedniu. W Gimnazjum Hilda wykazywa³a zdolno¶ci matematyczne i rodzice wsparli j± finansowo, aby mog³a studiowaæ matematykê na Uniwersytecie w Wiedniu. Po otrzymaniu pierwszego stopnia naukowego, Geiringer kontynuowa³a badanie matematyki w Wiedniu.
