by Hermann von Helmholtz
Introduction to a series of lectures
delivered at Carlsruhe
in the Winter of 1862-1863 On this exact conformity with law depends also the certainty with which we know how to tame the impetuous force of steam, and to make it the obedient servant of our wants. On this conformity depends, moreover, the intellectual fascination which chains the physicist to his subjects. It is an interest of quite a different kind to that which mental and moral sciences afford. In the latter it is man in the various phases of his intellectual activity who chains us. Every great deed of which history tells us, every mighty passion which art can represent, every picture of manners, of civic arrangements, of the culture of peoples of distant lands or of remote times, seizes and interests us, even if there is no exact scientific connection among them. We continually find points of contact and comparison in our conceptions and feelings; we get to know the hidden capacities and desires of the mind, which in the ordinary peaceful course of civilised life remain unawakened. The last decades of scientific development have led us to the recognition of a new universal law of all natural phenomena, which, from its extraordinarily extended range, and from the connection which it constitutes between natural phenomena of all kinds, even of the remotest times and the most distant places, is especially fitted to give us an idea of what I have described as the character of the natural sciences, which I have chosen as the subject of this lecture.

Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz: On the Sensations of Tone (1870; English 1875)
The earliest systematic applications of experimental laboratory procedure to problems of sensation and perception appeared in the first half of the 19th century. In 1825, Jan Evangelista Purkyne published groundbreaking explorations of the effect on visual experience of experimental manipulations that included application to the eyeball of pressure and electric current, alter-ation in point of light exposure relative to the fovea, degree of eye movement, and variation in the intensity of light. Nine years later, in 1834, Ernst Heinrich Weber completed an extensive investigation of the sensory phenomenology of tactile experience that laid the groundwork for Fechner’s eventual development of psychophysics. By the 1860s, research on sensation and perception had come into its own as concepts and techniques from a number of different disciplines were brought together to create the first systematic science of sensory physiology and psychology. Of all those who contributed to this development, none was more important than Hermann Helmholtz 55 and no work more broadly influential than his O n the Sensation of Tone as a Physiological Basis for a Theory of Music The characteristic feature of Helmholtz’s approach to the study of sensory processes was his exceptional ability to unite elements from different intellectual disciplines into an integrated, consistent, and innovative structure that served to explain and relate numerous previously unexplained or poorly explained phenomena. The Hébertists pressured the Revolutionary government into taking its most extrreme measures. His pseudonym was Père Duchesne Born into a bourgeois family, Hébert moved to Paris where he lived in poverty from 1780 until the outbreak of the Revolution in 1789, after which he began his career as a journalist, writing colurful, sacrilegious political satires. His newspaper, Le Père Duchesne , appeared in November 1790 and soon became the most widely read newspaper of the French Revolution, attacking the church and the aristocracy. As a representative to the Revolutionary Commune he helped plan the popular insurrection that overthrew the monarchy on Aug. 10, 1792. He had the Cathedral of Notre-Dame and some 2,000 other churches converted to Temples of Reason. In December Hébert was elected assistant procurator-general of the Commune, which had become the governing body of Paris. As a Jacobin deputy to the National Convention, he waged a fierce campaign against the Girondists, using Le Père Duchesne as a mouthpiece for the sansculottes, demanding the death sentence for the king and the establishment of a revolutionary government.

The Helmholtz centres do basic and preventive research as well as technical development for industry in natural science/technical as well as biological/medical fields. The Helmholtz centres have partnerships with universities for both research and for training. The centres are publicly funded, but scientifically independent and pursue the state's long-term research goals. Their research emphasizes - Structure of matter - Earth and environment - Transport and Space - Health - Energy - Key Technologies The organization promotes the exchange of experience and information among its members and coordinates their research and development work. The research centres focus on complex scientific/technological tasks and develop systems solutions. The association also operates major scientific instruments and installations.

Born: 31 Aug 1821 in Potsdam, Germany Died: 8 Sept 1894 in Berlin, Germany by: J.J O'Connor and E. F. Robertson Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz
Hermann von Helmholtz's father was August Ferdinand Julius Helmholtz while his mother was Caroline Penn. Hermann was the eldest of his parents four children. His childhood had a strong influence on both his character and his later career. In particular the views on philosophy held by his father restricted Helmholtz's own views.
Ferdinand Helmholtz had served in the Prussian army in the fight against Napoleon. Despite having a good university education in philology and philosophy, he became a teacher at Potsdam Gymnasium. It was a poorly paid job and Hermann was brought up in financially difficult circumstances. Ferdinand was an artistic man and his influence meant that Hermann grew up to have a strong love of music and painting. Caroline Helmholtz was the daughter of an artillery officer. From her Hermann inherited [1]:-
