This essay on the work of 19th-Century German physician, physicist and philosopher Hermann von Helmholtz is the culmination of a compressed yet nevertheless wide-ranging exploration of the man and his work which began as a search for understanding of Helmholtzian thermodynamics and evolved instead into an analysis of the scientist's work in acoustical research, and his early forays into the psychophysics of human perception. The intent of this essay is two-fold: to both trace the trajectory of Helmholtz's life and the scientific pursuits which lead him into early psychophysical sensory research, and to demonstrate an at least basic, passing knowledge of the physical theorems and processes that formed the basis of his work. It should be noted that, while Helmholtz did psychophysical experimentation in both vision and sound, the analysis here will be confined to an examination of the latter for reasons of clarity and space. Comprising the basis of this examination are the four texts of this month's reading, anchored by the hernia-inducing

Description
About the Editor DESCRIPTION (back to top) Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894) was a polymath of dazzling intellectual range and energy. Renowned for his co-discovery of the second law of thermodynamics and his invention of the ophthalmoscope, Helmholtz also made many other contributions to physiology, physical theory, philosophy of science and mathematics, and aesthetic thought. During the late nineteenth century, Helmholtz was revered as a scientist-sagemuch like Albert Einstein in this century. David Cahan has assembled an outstanding group of European and North American historians of science and philosophy for this intellectual biography of Helmholtz, the first ever to critically assess both his published and unpublished writings. It represents a significant contribution not only to Helmholtz scholarship but also to the history of nineteenth-century science and philosophy in general. ABOUT THE EDITOR (back to top)

The Collection Exhibits Learn and Teach ... The Academy Education Fund The Ophthalmoscope and Hermann von Helmholtz
Hermann von Helmholtz was born in 1821 in Pottsdam, Germany. He was one of the great scientific minds of the 19th century whose accomplishments were in both medicine and science. In 1850 Helmholtz prepared an experiment for his physiology students to demonstrate the law of conservation of energy. For the experiment Helmholtz constructed a crude instrument made of cardboard, glue and microscope glass plates. This device was the predecessor of the ophthalmoscope used today.
Helmholtz had many great accomplishments other than the ophthalmoscope, including his mastery and definition of physiological optics, theory of heat and energy, theories of hearing and the phenomenon of color and accommodation. Helmholtz earned many significant awards for his work, including being awarded the addition of the suffix "von" to his name. This honor, which he received from Kaiser Wilhem I, is similar to that of being knighted and one that can be inherited by descendants.

Hermann von Helmholtz graduated from the Medical Institute in Berlin in 1843 and was assigned to a military regiment at Potsdam, but spent all his spare time doing research. In 1858 he became professor of anatomy and physiology at Bonn, then in 1871, professor of physics at Berlin. His most important work was in mathematical physics and acoustics where his major study of 1863 was interested in musical theory and the perception of sound. In mathematical appendices he advocated the use of Fourier series. He published an important paper on the first law of thermodynamics in 1842. Helmholtz investigated the properties of non-Euclidean space and showed that these could be worked with as easily as the geometry of three dimensions. Helmholtz, Hermann von (1821-1894)
The leading German physicist of his day and an early advocate of the idea of panspermia . In a public lecture delivered in 1871 he said: Who can say whether the comets and meteors ... may not scatter germs of life wherever a new world has reached the stage in which it is a suitable dwelling place for organic beings? We might, perhaps, consider such life to be allied to ours, at least in germ, however different the form it might assume in adapting to its new dwelling place. Criticizing this hypothesis, which was put forward independently in the same year by William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), Frederick Zöllner argued that meteorites reach such high temperature on falling through the Earth's atmosphere that any organisms contained within them would be incinerated. In reply, Helmholtz pointed out that the interior of a meteorite would remain cool during its passage through the air and, in any case, organisms on the surface might be thrown free before the temperature became intolerable.
