HISTORY OF FRIESLAND
IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING WITH FRISIAN PROVENANCE
106 SCHOTANUS, Christiaan.
(16), "370" [= 368] pp.
First edition of a classic history of Friesland and the Frisian people, from the earliest times to c. 1500. In twenty chapters, it covers the origins of the Frisian people, the Roman, Frankish, Norman, Saxon and Burgundian eras, Friesland's special status under Charlemagne and his successors from the ninth to the twelfth centuries, customs and manners, and the history of the Church. On the reverse of the title-page is the author's six-year privilege from the States of Friesland for publication of the book, as well as his own notice transferring his rights to the printer Albertsz. in Franeker and bookseller Prigge in Leeuwarden. These are followed by his six-page dedication to Prince Willem Frederik of Nassau-Dietz and the States of Friesland, a five-page note to the reader and a three-page list of the contents of the chapters. At the end is a seven-page appendix devoted to Frisian names and their origins. Included is the name Harinxma, the family of the owner of the present copy.
Christiaan Schotanus (1603-1671), minister of the Church and professor of Greek, Church history and theology at the University of Franeker, is best known for his publications on the history of Friesland. This is the first of his three most important works.

SEVERINUS, Petrus. -
The Hague, Adriaan Vlacq, 1660. 4to. (8), 212, (2). Extremely rare first edition of this medical work and commentary on the Idea medicinae philosophicae by the Danish physician Petrus Severinus (or Peder Soerensen; 1542-1602) by the Scot William Davis(s)on (ca. 1593-ca. 1669). Petrus Severinus, a precocious student, was born and received his early education in Denmark and his doctorate in France in 1571. He was devoted to the doctrines of Paracelsus (1483-1541) whom he supports in his main book, his rare Idea , that was first published in Basle in 1571. This 1660 edition is bound together with the first edition of Davisson's commentaries. Severinus extended Paracelsus' ideas concerning invisible agents of disease in the concept of 'pathologia animata'. The work was translated recently in Danish by Hans Skov who added an extensive introduction and bibliography.

Scientists of the Christian Faith: From the Era of Galileo The Galileo Project is a hypertext source of information on the life and work of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and the science of his time. The project, whose homepage is here: http://es.rice.edu/ES/humsoc/Galileo/ , is supported by the Office of the Vice President of Computing of Rice University. The initial stages were made possible by a grant from the Council on Library Resources to Fondren Library. Contributors to the Project are noted here: http://es.rice.edu/ES/humsoc/Galileo/About/galileo_development.html Albert Van Helden, Lynette Autrey Professor of History at Rice University, is responsible for the written text in the Project (except where otherwise noted). The Project features a Catalog of the Scientific Community of the 16th and 17th Centuries at http://es.rice.edu/ES/humsoc/Galileo/Catalog/catalog.html This is a searchable database of detailed histories of over 600 individuals who made significant contributions to Western science. These histories have been compiled by Richard S. Westfall, Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University. From this I’ve compiled a list of 522 Galileo-era scientists known to be Christians, with links to biographies from the Galileo Project.
