ONDERZOEK AAN DE SLINGER IN DE ZEVENTIENDE EEUW Huygens' onderzoek aan de slinger zette het werk voort dat was begonnen door de Italiaanse geleerde Galileo Galilei (1564-1642). Huygens zag kans om de theorie van de slinger een stevige wiskundige basis te geven en slaagde erin een praktische toepassing voor de slinger voor het verbeteren van de nauwkeurigheid van mechanische uurwerken. Les faits et les conséquences du verdict prononcé par le Saint-Office sont très instructifs lorsqu'on cherche à comprendre quelle est la position de l'Eglise face au monde de la science. Si de nos jours l’Eglise tend la main aux hommes de science, il n’en fut pas toujours ainsi. Pendant près de deux mille ans, si les Ecritures ne sanctionnaient pas les écrits philosophiques et préscientifiques, pour le clergé leurs interprétations ne souffraient aucune exception : les véritables découvertes scientifiques étaient l’oeuvre du Créateur. Le dogme chrétien, enraciné dans les écrits de l’Ancien Testament avait la conviction que l’Univers avait été créé par Dieu. Le Credo, symbole de la foi chrétienne, inventé lors du Concile de Nicée de 325 rappelait en effet que “Dieu avait créé le ciel et la terre” mais il ne disait pas que l’Univers avait été “engendré”, action qu’il réservait au Christ.
