From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Urbain Le Verrier. Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier March 11 September 23 ) was a French mathematician who specialized in celestial mechanics . He worked at the Paris Observatory for most of his life. He was born in Saint-L´ , France. His most famous achievement is the discovery of Neptune , using only mathematics and astronomical observations. Encouraged by Arago , he performed calculations to explain discrepancies between Uranus 's observed orbit and that predicted from the laws of Kepler and Newton . At the same time, but unknown to each other, the same calculations were made by Adams . Le Verrier assisted Galle in locating the planet (September ); which was found within 1° of its predicted location at a point in Aquarius . (There was, and to some extent still is, some controversy over the apportionment of credit for the discovery; see Discovery of Neptune Perhaps galvanized by his discovery, Le Verrier proceeded to interpret the orbit of

Urbain Le Verrier
Cool! Le Verrier theorized that there was a second asteroid belt in our solar system. He believed the second belt was between the Sun and Mercury. We now know that this second belt does not exist. In 1854, Le Verrier became director of the Observatory of Paris. At the time, this observatory was in decay. Le Verrier reestablished the observatory as a place where good science was taking place. He often used very tough measures at the observatory. As a consequence, a storm of protest led to his removal as director in 1870. He was reinstated as director in 1873. Urbain Le Verrier died in Paris in 1877.

B. C. to the year 100,000 A. D. With all his erudition Le Verrier was a zealous adherent and true son of the Catholic Church; even as deputy of the Assembly he openly acknowledged and defended his Catholic faith before all the world. He was also a ready speaker, one in no way discomposed by the attacks of opponents, for he knew how by profound and logical statements to convince his hearers quickly. When dying he said in the words of the aged Simeon: "Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, in pace". Those who spoke at the funeral of this remarkable man could truthfully assert that the study of the star-worlds stimulated in him the living belief of the Christian FIGUIER, , XXI (Paris, 1877); DENZA, Commemorazione di alcuni uomini illustri nella scienza (Turin, 1877); HEUZEAU, Vade-mecum de l'astronomie (Brussels, 1882); Annuaire (for 1890) published by the Bureau des Longitudes; KNELLER, Das Christentum und die Vertreter der Naturwissenschaft (2nd ed., Freiburg im Br., 1904).
