The characteristic of words or phrases whose meaning is not determined with precision . Use of one or more vague terms typically renders it impossible to establish the truth or falsity of the sentences in which they appear. Example: "The temperature is warm today." is difficult to evaluate because there is no clear borderline between "warm" and "not warm" Note the difference between vagueness and ambiguity Recommended Reading: Timothy Williamson, Vagueness at Amazon.com Vagueness: A Reader at Amazon.com Vagueness and Contradiction at Amazon.com Vagueness: An Investigation into Natural Languages and the Sorites Paradox at Amazon.com Theories of Vagueness at Amazon.com Also see SEP FF Adam Morton , and Loretta Torrago

V enn D iagrams and B oolean O perations Historical Notes: George Boole and John Venn were 19th century mathematicians. George Boole developed what became known as Boolean algebra or Boolean logic. Boole's work became important when applied to electronic logic circuits in the late 1930s. John Venn is best known for his circle diagrams representing the relationships between sets. T here are 3 Boolean operators: AND OR , and NOT Some systems use AND NOT in place of NOT. T he Boolean operators are used to combine search terms. I n search logic, Boolean operators act on sets. In bibliographic database searching the sets are groups of records containing a particular word. C omplex search statements may include a mix of Boolean operators. This Venn diagram shows all the possible relationships for records in a dabase with respect to two sets: A - the records found exclusively in set 1.

Scrivener Notaries 95 Aldwych, London, WC2B 4JF, England. , which is one of the oldest City livery companies, traces its origins as far back as 1373. The Company sets the examinations for prospective scrivener notaries and prescribes the other qualifications for entry to the profession. It is one of the few livery companies which still governs a "living" profession. The profession is a highly specialised one and has grown out of the unique position of the City of London as an international trading centre. Nearly all the work of scrivener notaries is of an international nature, although they are competent to advise on certain domestic matters as well. Scrivener notaries are trained not only in English law, but also in relevant aspects of the law of a foreign country. They are also examined in two foreign languages. This places them in a unique position to provide a bridge between the common law system prevalent in the English speaking world, and the civil law system found in many other parts of the world, including most countries in continental Europe and the whole of Latin America. Scrivener notaries are therefore able to certify documents in many languages and also to prepare legal documents -for example powers of attorney - in the form and language of the country in which they are to be used.

JOHN VENN By Autumn John Venn was a very interesting inventor. The name of my inventor is John Venn. My inventor was born on August 4th, 1834, and died on April 4th, 1923. John Venn was born in England. John Venn was a very mathematical and logical boy. John Venn moved to London when he was young. His first school in London was called Sir Roger Cholmley's School. But now it is called Highgate School in London. John Venn went to 2 different colleges in Cambridge, London. John Venn went to Gonville and Caius Colleges in Cambridge, London. In 1854 John Venn was elected a mathematical scholar of Caius College in Cambridge, London. I think John Venn was a very educated inventor. This is when John Venn put his invention in a magazine. The Venn Diagram or Diagrams were first put out in 1880 in the magazine called Philosophical Magazine. The article John Venn put in was called "On the Diagrammatic and Mechanical Representation of Propositions and Reasonings". I think the Venn Diagram was an important invention. John Venn's most famous invention is the Venn Diagram. The Venn Diagram shows things alike and different between two different objects or ideas, like back in the olden days between 1800 and now. History and Founders
The Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery has been in continuous operation for over thirty years. Students have traveled from every continent except Antarctica, to attend. Since its founding in 1975, over 1200 students have graduated. Click here for a picture of John's doubleneck guitar. The Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery is situated on a three acre lot in the old world atmosphere of South Phoenix. A collection of buildings and sheds is the unassuming facade for the birth of finely crafted guitar art. The idea for a guitar making school grew out of an apprenticeship program that John Roberts (1921 - 1999) started back in 1969 called the Juan Roberto Guitar Works. Before this, John found himself in the jungles of Nicaragua, flying airplanes for a wood import company. Much of the rosewood and mahogany used at the school was collected with the help of the Miskito Indians and shipped to Phoenix where John began his guitar making endeavor. John Roberts passed away in the summer of 1999. We think of him daily. Robert Venn (1926 - 1991) joined with John in 1973, and brought custom electric guitar making expertise to the guitar partnership. Bob was one a handful of guitar makers in the 1950's and 60's to wind his own pickups and use wooden pickup covers aesthetically matched with the highly figured hardwoods he used in the body and neck of his instruments. Bob built or repaired for fine guitarists such as: Phil Baugh, Maurice Anderson, Tom Morrell, Bud Isaacs, Norm Hamlet, and Tiny Moore. We miss him.
