Institute For Advanced Study This inscribed stone tablet dating from 357 B.C. records a decree of Amphipolis (Thrace), an Athenian colony founded in 437 but lost in 424. It banishes Philon and Stratocles, adversaries of King Philip II (the father of Alexander the Great), from the city for the rest of their lives. It was issued after Philip had conquered the city and disregarded his earlier promise to hand it over to the Athenians in exchange for the city of Pydna. Stratocles is also known from Demosthenes (or. 1, 8) as one of the ambassadors who had in vain requested Athenian military aid against Philip. A squeeze (paper impression) of the decree is one of thousands in the Institute's collection. The stele is preserved in the Epigraphical Museum of Athens (EM 11542).
Stone inscriptions such as the above provide direct access to the life, social structure, thought, and values of the ancient world, notes Christian Habicht, Professor Emeritus of Ancient History in the School of Historical Studies. Information provided by inscriptions on ancient stones, papyri, coins, and other artifacts invigorate the field of classical studies, in which unknown works by ancient authors rarely come to light. Discoveries of previously unknown inscriptions in Greek or Latin, however, are frequent and provide the historian a rich supply of new information ranging from the historically mundane to the historically important.

Mathematics and philosophy have always been twins. The attraction of the "Queen of Sciences" for philosophers is fairly obvious. From Pythagoras to Leibnitz and Descartes to Russell the two disciplines are frequently, and for good reason, exemplified in the same individual.
Arthur Young was a mathematician and an engineer, a practical man who knew how, in the Yankee tradition of know-how, and as such was the most significant single figure in the development of the Bell helicopter. He was also a top-flight astrologer, a delver into myths and dreams, a long-term investigator of PSI phenomena but, more importantly, the elaborator of what may be the first unified field theory of consciousness and of existence itself: the Theory of Process, described in his two volume work, The Reflexive Universe and The Geometry of Meaning
Shortly before Arthur Young was born, Charles Saunders Peirce, whom Russell called "one of the most original minds of the later nineteenth century, and certainly the greatest American thinker ever, had published a scathing attack on his contemporaries. The business of metaphysics, Peirce said, "is to study the most general features of reality and real objects. But in its present condition it is...a puny, rickety, and scrofulous science. It is only too plain that those who pretend to cultivate it carry not the hearts of true men of science within their breasts."
The year of Peirce's diatribe, the year too of Einstein's first paper on relativity, Charles and Eliza Young were in Paris, early expatriates in what was to become an American tradition.

MUSIC (Guitar):
Andres Segovia [1893-1987], from Spain, was the most famous guitarist of all time. He brought the classical guitar from its folk- and dance-related image to the symphonies and concert halls of the most established musical prominence. He developed an approach to plucking the guitar strings with the fingernails of the right hand, which became the dominat school of guitar, displacing the gentler and more lyrical Neapolitan school which used the fingertips. Christopher Parkening is arguably the greatest American performer of Classical Guitar. After a year of intensive Classical Guitar at Brookdale Community College, under Christopher Parkening's master student Barry Eisner, I was able to play a few baroque pieces and original compositions at community college concerts, and then retired to the occasional original song at Woodstock, various parties and resorts, and while hitchiking across America, singing for my supper. See also Donald Justice and Carl Ruggles in the "Poetry" section, below.

  • Background note Administrative information Background note Simon Flexner and Hideo Noguchi The Flexner family happily supported the newly ambitious Simon and arranged for him to be apprenticed to a respected area druggist. It was a fortunate pairing; the druggist, while not overly ambitious, was kind and encouraging and Simon flourished under his tutelage. Part of his apprenticeship included a series of courses at the Louisville School of Pharmacy, where to his surprise and to the delight of his family, Flexner excelled. It was a proud moment when Simon presented the gold medal for scholastic achievement to his mother and dying father. In the evenings, Simon would take the store microscope home and conduct his own studies under the single gaslight shared by the entire family. Once a poor student, Flexner now devoted himself to learning. In 1882, Flexner clerked at his eldest brother Jacob's drugstore where his thirst for knowledge grew. At the pharmacy, he listened intently to the gathered physicians' shoptalk and spent his evenings poring over borrowed books to familiarize himself with rudimentary medical principles. His interest in microscopy led Flexner to study histology and then pathology, an uncharted discipline at that time especially in Louisville. Local doctors increasingly brought Simon specimens and sought his opinion. It was soon apparent that Simon had learned all that he could from borrowed books; the time had arrived to pursue formal education.
