Biography Pierre Varignon, born at Caen in 1654, and died in Paris on Dec. 22, 1722, was an intimate friend of Newton, Leibnitz and the Bernoullis, and, after l'Hospital, was the earliest and most powerful advocate in France of the use of the differential calculus. He realised the necessity of obtaining a test for examining the convergency of series, but the analytical difficulties were beyond his powers. He simplified the proofs of many of the leading propositions in mechanics, and in 1687 recast the treatment of the subject, basing it on the composition of forces. His works were published at Paris in 1725.

VARIGNON, Pierre. (including the final blank). 3 folding engraved plates, engraved device on title-page, one headpiece and 3 culs-de-lampe (2 of the latter bsigned by Mantarelli), in original cartone alla rustica, small piece missing from spine, uncut. First Italian edition of Varignon's (1654-1722) Traité du mouvement, et de la mesure des eaux coulantes et jaillissantes, first published, posthumously, in 1725. While not in the forefront of scientific thinkers of the time, and heavily criticised by Bossut and others some fifty years after his death, his Projet d'une nouvelle méchamique, published in 1687, brought about his nomination as geometer in the Académie des Sciences in 1688, as well as the first appointment to the newly created professorship of mathematics at the Collège Mazarin. 'By inaugurating a chair devoted specifically to mathematics at the Collège Mazarin, he joined the handful of men who were then teaching advanced mathematics: and it is in this context that his work was of great importance', DSB. He was also in frequent correspondence with Leibnitz and Bernoulli. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Hesketh and Ward Ltd.

    Occupation: Artisan
Varignon was the son and brother of contracting masons.
Varignon himself says that he was born poor and had no patrimony or possession beyond his own labor.
    3. Nationality
    Birth: French
    Career: French
    Death: French
    4. Education
    Schooling: Caen, M.A.
He probably studied at the Jesuit college in Caen. He received a Master's of Arts degree (from the University, I believe) in 1682. I assume a B.A.
    5. Religion
    Affiliation: Catholic
On 19 December 1676 he received the tonsure. At some unknown later date he became a priest. His ecclesiastical career enabled him to study at the University of Caen where he was undoubtedly one of the oldest students.
    6. Scientific Disciplines
    Primary: Mathematics, Mechanics
Varignon's primary contribution to the progress of science was his pedagogical activity in general statics. In 1687 he published his Projet d'une nouvelle méchanique. Like the work of Newton and Lamy, Varignon's Projet contained the principle of the compostion of forces by infinitely small movements rather than finite ones. This work, which he dedicated to the Académie des Sciences, led to his nomination to the Académie in 1688. In the same year he was appointed professor at the Collège Mazarin. He became one of a handful of men who were teaching advanced mathematics at the time. His teaching duties and his responsibilities as an academicien fully occupied his time and he had no leisure to prepare works for publication. He wrote short works that appeared in journals or as memoirs of the Académie. One memoir showed how to apply infinitesimal analysis to the science of motion and how, in specific cases, to use the relationship between force and acceleration.

    Varignon Parallelogram: What is it?
    A Mathematical Droodle
    Explanation Alexander Bogomolny
    Varignon Parallelogram
Midpoints of successive sides of a quadrilateral form a parallelogram. To see this, observe that the lines in question are parallel to the diagonals of the quadrilateral. They are therefore pairwise equal and parallel. This is known as the Varignon parallelogram The two lines that join the midpoints of the opposite sides of the quadrilateral serve as the diagonals of the Varignon parallelogram. They are divided into halves by their point of intersection. (In 3D, a similar result holds for the three lines connecting the midpoints of the opposite edges of a tetrahedron: the three are concurrent. The common point serves as the center of gravity of the four vertices. The center of gravity divides each of the three lines into two equal parts.) Coxeter and Greitzer attribute the theorem to Pierre Varignon (1654-1722). The theorem was published posthumously in 1731. Given it's simplicity, this is utterly surprising that it had to be waiting that long to be discovered. The area of Varignon's parallelogram is half that of the quadrilateral. Its perimeter is equal to the sum of the diagonals of the quadrilateral.
