For evidence, he referred to an article in Bartel L. van der Waerden's Sources of Quantum Mechanics (Dover, New York, 1967). I thank Galles for his correction. But allow me to add that the photograph and its caption were supplied not by me but by Physics Today staff (a staff that I have always found to be helpful to authors, and that rarely, except perhaps at the last minute of production, would make even a small glitch). I also congratulate Galles for reminding readers of the useful book by van der Waerden. Introducción Entre el lunes 29 de junio y el sábado 4 de julio de 1931 tuvo lugar en Londres el II Congreso Internacional de Historia de la Ciencia y Tecnología (el primer congreso había tenido lugar en 1929 en París). A este congreso asistió una nutrida delegación de profesores de la Unión Soviética encabezada por N. Bujarin . De entre todos aquellos delegados soviéticos, brilló con luz propia el trabajo presentado por Boris Mijailovich Hessen, «Las raíces socioeconómicas de los Principia de Newton». En este artículo pretendemos recuperar la memoria de este extraordinario trabajo y restaurar su verdadero contexto filosófico contra las equívocas interpretaciones que sufrió en virtud de las cuales fue relegado a un olvido que no nos podemos permitir. Cuando los estudios sobre Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad adquieren casi la forma de una disciplina exenta, Hessen vuelve a aparecer en el horizonte como una alternativa filosófica sugerente, crítica y comprometida contra las tendencias relativistas, y en el fondo, reaccionarias, que invaden dichos estudios. En este sentido su recuerdo deja de ser una labor de anticuario.

His doctorate, supervised by Hendrik de Vries, was awarded by Amsterdam for a thesis on the foundations of algebraic geometry . In 1928 he received his habilitation The year 1928 was a busy one for van der Waerden. He received a position at the University of Rostock but was appointed to a lectureship at Groningen in the same year. In 1931 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Leipzig where he became a colleague of Heisenberg Before and after World War II van der Waerden had problems as a foreigner from the Nazis. Although working in Germany he refused to give up his Dutch citizenship and his life was made difficult. After the War van der Waerden worked for Shell in Amsterdam in applied mathematics. In 1947 he visited the USA going to Johns Hopkins University. He returned in 1948 to a chair of mathematics at Amsterdam where he remained until 1951. In 1950 Karl Fueter died and van der Waerden was appointed to fill the vacant chair in Zurich in 1951.

Van der WAERDEN Bartel Leendert, hollandais, 1903-1996 Esprit brillant, Bartel van der Waerden entreprit ses études de mathématiques à l'âge de 16 ans. Diplômé des universités d'Amsterdam et de Göttingen , spécialiste d'algèbre et de géométrie algébrique, il enseigna principalement à Leipzig (Allemagne), Amsterdam et Zürich (Suisse). Van der Waerden fut aussi un historien des sciences.
