    the history of mathematics, although I've leafed through many reviews of
    his papers and books. However, right now the best I recall is a short but
    juicy interview with Bartel L. van der Waerden (and his wife, Camilla)

    Thoughts on Ancient Egyptian Mathematics

    Department of Mathematics ABSTRACT Do the experts, Egyptomologist, know the true history of Egypt, and furthermore, are they sure of the level of Egyptian mathematical thought? This paper demonstrates two problems found on ancient papyri, and examines the words of scholars to determine the answer to the above questions. It has been said that Egyptian mathematics was only practical arithmetic and simple geometry. There are several scholars who contend Egyptians lacked formal proofs and stated rules, and therefore they lacked ``the scientific attitude of mind'' (Gillings 232). Thomas Eric Peet, a noted professor of Egyptology, refers to the table of fractions in the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus as being proof that the Egyptians did not reach a scientific understanding of mathematics (ibid). Concerning geometry, Bartel L. Van der Waerdan in Science Awakening II states ``The Egyptians of the Middle Kingdom had methods for calculating areas . . . but there is no textual evidence of a geometry with constructions and proofs. Furthermore . . . the mathematical texts were no longer copied after the Hyksos period'' (41). These and other scholars contend that the Egyptians did not have the rigor of mathematics, and the value of studying Egyptian mathematics lies only in its place as history. There are two prime sources which are considered the best examples of Egyptian mathematics. These are the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus and the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus. Several other sources exist such as the the Kahun Mathematical Fragments and the Mathematical Leather Roll at the British Museum, but these add nothing of substance to our knowledge of ancient Egyptian mathematics.

    The branch of pure mathematics known as Ramsey theory concerns the existence of highly regular patterns in sufficiently large sets of randomly selected objects, whether they are gatherings of people, piles of pebbles, stars in the night sky, or sequences of numbers generated by the throw of a die. Patterns can arise out of randomness in a variety of ways. On a clear, moonless night, we see thousands of stars scattered across the sky. With so many stars visible, it's not particularly difficult to pick out groups that appear in a certain pattern: four stars that nearly form a straight line or a square, six stars that define a cross, seven stars in the shape of a dipper. The human imagination fills in the rest, connecting the dots to create a menagerie of celestial creatures that inhabit the sky. Ramsey theory goes further by proving the existence of highly regular mathematical patterns among sets of integers and other mathematical objects. Indeed, it implies that complete disorder is impossible. Somehow, no matter how complicated, chaotic, or random something appears, deep within that morass lurks a smaller entity that has a definite structure. Striking regularities are bound to arise even in a universe without rules. Dutch mathematician Bartel L. van der Waerden (1903-1996) was for one of the first to identify such a pattern among integersone that involves arithmetic progressions (or sequences) in sets of numbers. An arithmetic progression is a sequence of numbers in which each number is bigger (or smaller) than the number before it by a constant amount. For example, the sequence of integers 3, 5, 7 is a three-term arithmetic progression in which the difference between successive terms is 2.

    Rainbow Randomness
    Ivars Peterson The branch of pure mathematics known as Ramsey theory concerns the existence of highly regular patterns in sufficiently large sets of randomly selected objects, whether they are gatherings of people, piles of pebbles, stars in the night sky, or sequences of numbers generated by the throw of a die. Patterns can arise out of randomness in a variety of ways. On a clear, moonless night, we see thousands of stars scattered across the sky. With so many stars visible, it's not particularly difficult to pick out groups that appear in a certain pattern: four stars that nearly form a straight line or a square, six stars that define a cross, seven stars in the shape of a dipper. The human imagination fills in the rest, connecting the dots to create a menagerie of celestial creatures that inhabit the sky. Ramsey theory goes further by proving the existence of highly regular mathematical patterns among sets of integers and other mathematical objects. Indeed, it implies that complete disorder is impossible. Somehow, no matter how complicated, chaotic, or random something appears, deep within that morass lurks a smaller entity that has a definite structure. Striking regularities are bound to arise even in a universe without rules.

    Tomorrow's colloquium will focus on using mathematics to predict animal behavior
    • When: Thursday, February 3 at 4:00 p.m.
      Where: VWF 104
    In tomorrow's colloquium Professor Shandelle Henson of Andrews University will not show us how animals can be used to predict the weather, but will speak on the title "Can Mathematical Equations Predict Animal Behavior?" She will show that differential equations are being used to explain and predict the behavior of marine birds and mammals at Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge, Washington. Undergraduate students are involved in every aspect of the research, from data collection to the construction and analysis of mathematical models. This talk will be interdisciplinary and accessible. Although a knowledge of calculus and differential equations is necessary to understand some details, everyone will be able to appreciate the main points. The colloquium takes place tomorrow at 4:00 in VWF 104. Don't forget that tea time is scheduled from 3:30 to 4:00 in VWF 222.
