Paul Samuilovich Urysohn February 3 August 17 ) was a Russian mathematician who is best known for his contributions in the theory of dimension , for developing Urysohn's Metrization Theorem and Urysohn's Lemma , both of which are fundamental results in topology His is also commemorated in the term Menger-Urysohn dimension. Pavel Urysohn studied in University of Moscow from to and worked there as an assistant professor from 1921 to , when he drowned while swimming off the coast of Brittany France

We can also schedule special meetings to talk about problems if that would be helpful. My Office 203A Cupples I
My Office Hours M,W 1:30-2:30, Th 2:45-3:30 (but I'm also happy to try to make appointments at some other times)

In 417, we covered most of the material in Kaplansky's book, Set Theory and Metric Spaces ; the omitted material consisted mostly of Chapter 3.
Those topics will be covered in 418. In addition, we covered some topics in much more depth and added some material about general topological spaces.
In Math 418, we will cover material about products, quotients, embedding, metrizability. This includes some of the classic theorems of general topology
such as Urysohn's Lemma, Tietze's Theorem, Urysohn's Metrization Theorem and the Tychonoff Product Theorem. There will be some additional material

1999 Chechnya war: http://www.cdi.org/issues/Europe/aug.html Clinton admits "inappropriate relationship"
Contrary to his testimony in the Paula Jones sexual-harassment case, President Bill Clinton acknowledges to prosecutors from the office of Independent Counsel Ken Starr that he had had an extramarital affair with ex-White House intern Monica Lewinsky. In four hours of closed-door testimony, conducted in the Map Room of the White House, Clinton speaks live via closed-circuit television to a grand jury in a nearby federal courthouse. He is the first sitting president to ever testify before a grand jury investigating his conduct.
That evening, President Clinton gives a four-minute televised address to the nation in which he admits he had an inappropriate relationship with Monica Lewinsky. In the brief speech, which is filled of legalisms, the word "sex" is absent and the word "regret" is only used in reference to his admission that he misled the public and his family.
In April of 1996, Lewinsky was transferred to the Pentagon. That summer, she first confided in Pentagon co-worker Linda Tripp about her sexual relationship with the president. In 1997, with that relationship ended, Tripp began to secretly record conversations with Lewinsky in which she gave details about the affair. In December, Lewinsky was subpoenaed by lawyers for Paula Jones, who was suing the president on sexual harassment charges.

Mathematicians and light bulbs ISSN 0110-0025 CENTREFOLD BOB LONG Robert Stephen Long is a very good candidate for a long-service medal for his contributions to mathematics in this country, and his career illustrates with great clarity the development of the subject in the past half-century. With the retirement of Sadler, and the arrival of Derek Lawden as HoD, the atmosphere if not the resources for research improved a great deal, and through the 1960s Bob wrote and published a series of papers, largely on one of the topics that Lawden had pioneered, that of orbital transfer. He was promoted to a readership in 1968. Throughout his time in the department, Bob took more than his share of administrative work, and of the teaching of first-year and engineering mathematics courses, and is rightly remembered for his patience and thoroughness. On his retirement at the end of the 1980s, Bob became involved in (perhaps "was inveigled into" suits the case better) the NZ International Mathematical Olympiad movement, and set up the weekly coaching sessions which are open to candidate olympians in Christchurch. He is still in charge, and the number of this country's best young mathematicians who have passed through his hands, and who owe a real debt to him for patient instruction, encouragement and inspiration, grows by the year.
