Fall Semester 2003 Graduate Course Description Course Title: Seminar on Introductory Mathematical Biology Unique Number: M393C (57788) CAM 393C (63791) Time/Location of Lecture: TTH 11:00-12:30 pm (subject to change by student request)
RLM 9.160 or 10.176 (depending on class size) Instructor: Professor Karen Uhlenbeck Brief description
This course is for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students in math or physics.
For the third time I am offering a student seminar in introductory mathematical biology. We will look at basic applications of differential equations to population dynamics, epidemiology, enzyme kinetics, signaling in cells and other topics which happen to be of interest to the students who attend. This provides an excellent review of differential equations, linear algebra and the basics of advanced calculus in an applied setting, as well as a short introduction to chaos theory which may be of interest to students who are not specifically oriented towards biology. The format of the seminar includes student presentations and projects, lecture on specific topics by Professor Uhlenbeck, and presentations by UT students and professors who are doing research in fields related to mathematical biology. (The seminar has a number of graduates who are actively working on PhD's in the field of mathematical biology or dynamics). References Material will be taken from a number of sources including: Taubes, Modeling Differential Equations in Biology

My first love is the outdoors I enjoy mountain climbing, back-packing, hiking, canoeing, swimming, and bicycling. Many of these interests I inherited from my parents who, at age 83, are still hiking and back-packing. I am at home in nature and, when I can't be out in the wilderness, I can often be found in my garden at my home in Austin. That's the real me. My day-to-day life is something very different. As a young academic I worked by myself a lot. In fact, that was one of the attractions of mathematics. I am the eldest of four children and I always considered dealing with my siblings the hardest things I've ever done in my life. That had a great impact on my choosing a career I wanted a career where I didn't have to work with other people. I've always been competitive, but I don't like the attitudes of people who don't win (i.e. "sore losers"). So I found it attractive to work in an area where I compete only with myself and didn't have to deal with the negative aspects of competition. As my career advanced, however, I had to learn better communication skills in order to interact with graduate students. This was a very difficult stage of my career, but surprising to me, I found it very rewarding to deal with younger mathematicians, and I now truly enjoy collaborative projects.

Women In Mathematics: The Addition of Difference
by Claudia Henrion
Reviewed by Mary Shepherd
The book is divided into six chapters, each exploring a "myth" about women and mathematics. Each of the first five chapters include a profile (interview) of one or two women mathematicians. The interviews are for me what brought the book alive. Eleven women were interviewed for the book, but only nine profiles are included: Joan Birman, Lenore Blum, Fan Chung, Fern Hunt, Vivienne Malone-Myers, Marian Pour-El, Judy Roitman, Mary Ellen Rudin and Karen Uhlenbeck. There are not many quotes, if any, from the two women (Marcia Groszek and Linda Keen) who were interviewed do not have profiles in the book. I am not familiar with all of these women, but I truly enjoyed each profile. I thought my favorite would be about Joan Birman since she, like me, received her PhD at age 41. But the most compelling one for me was Vivienne Malone-Myers. I'm sure each reader will have a favorite, too. The book is very readable. Each chapter could be read alone without difficulty. I found the book a joy to read, even when I did not agree with the premise of the author. It would be a great book to give to young women to encourage them to pursue a career in mathematics. I believe it is accessible to most students, perhaps even at the high school level. More than that, I believe men in mathematics should read this book too. It contains valuable insights into how some women perceive the mathematical community, and both men and women can gain by discussing the myths presented in the book. I would certainly encourage women undergraduate students to read this book.

Search WWW Karen Uhlenbeck Karen Uhlenbeck is one of the world's foremost researchers on non-linear differential equations and their geometric properties. She is professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin and since 1988 has held the Sid W. Richardson Foundation Regents' Chair in Mathematics. She is widely acclaimed as a talented and creative mathematician, as well as someone who has made a serious commitment to young women mathematicians. Significant accomplishments in this area are her roles as a founder of the Park City Mathematics Institute and as organizer of the Women's Program, a mentoring program for women associated with the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, Professor Uhlenbeck continued her studies at the Courant Institute in New York. She then entered Brandeis University and was awarded an M.A. and a Ph.D. in 1966 and 1968, respectively. Before going to the University of Texas, she taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; the University of Illinois, Chicago; and the University of Chicago. She also served as visiting professor at many other universities.

Schoen in 1988. We consider the problem of determining the moduli space of all such metrics. All such metrics are asymptotically periodic, and we develop the linear analysis necessary to understand the nonlinear problem. This includes a Fredholm theory and asymptotic regularity theory for the Laplacian on asymptotically periodic manifolds, which is of independent interest. The main result is that the moduli space is a locally real analytic variety of dimension . For a generic set of nearby conformal classes the moduli space is shown to be a -dimensional real analytic manifold. The structure as a real analytic variety is obtained by writing the space as an intersection of a Fredholm pair of infinite dimensional real analytic manifolds.
