He was an outspoken and uncompromising opponent of the Aristotelean Francis I interposed by appointing a committee to listen to a disputation between Ramus and his principal opponent, Anthony of Govea. The majority of the committee decided against Ramus, and condemned him as "rash, arrogant and impudent". This decision was confirmed by the king. In 1547, after the accession of Henry II, and owing to the protection of the Cardinal of Lorraine, Ramus was accorded greater liberty, and succeeded in obtaining a position as teacher, or "royal lecturer", at the College of Navarre. In 1562, he renounced Catholicism and became a Calvinist . In the massacre of St. Bartholomew, in 1572, he was singled out by his enemies and put to death with every circumstance of cruelty and brutality. Ramus was a writer of more than ordinary brilliancy and effectiveness. He sought out the weak points in the method of teaching logic then in vogue, and directed his attack against them with the ability, and indeed, very much in the manner, of the celebrated Italian Humanist, Vives. He objected especially to what he called the sterility of the logic then currently taught, and pleaded for a reform of the science along lines of broader human interest. In his positive teaching, that is to say, in the logic which he wished to substitute for the Aristotelean , he was not very successful. In a general way, he may be said to have advocated a closer union between rhetoric and logic, between the art of exposition and the art of argumentation. Among his following, the "Ramists", as they were called, were the Englishman, William Temple, and the Germans, Sturm, Freige, and Fabricius. In the official academic world he met with opposition not only at the University of Paris but also at Wittenberg, Helmstadt, and elsewhere. His opponents were called Anti-Ramists. He entered the navy as a midshipman, 4 March, 1823, became a passed midshipman, 23 March, 1829, and was commissioned lieutenant, 21 June, 1832. During the Mexican war he was present at the fall of Vera Cruz, and participated in the boat expedition at Tuspan and the second expedition at Tabasco, where he served with credit. He commanded the store-ship "Southampton" in the Pacific squadron in 1851-'2. He was placed on the reserved list in 1855, and was on waiting orders until 1861, when he was commissioned commander on 1 July, and was governor of the naval asylum at Philadelphia during the civil war. This second volume brings a bit more story into the series, dropping a second (but obviously much slower) space craft from Krypton into Gotham City bay. Inside is a teenage girl, talking fluent Kryptonian, able to fly and generally over-flowing with super powers. Superman leaps to the obvious conclusion, guided by an inscription on the side of the ship: she's Superman's cousin. Batman, being more suspicious in nature, fears that she may not be a force for good and a fairly long-winded "is she, isn't she" plot develops. Enter Darkseid, the god-like villain of Jack Kirby's New Gods , trying to turn Supergirl evil, while Wonder Woman pops up on the scene to help try and teach Supergirl some less testosterone-fuelled life lessons. And you've got yourself a conflict that Loeb essentially uses the rest of the book to resolve. It's an entertaining enough superhero romp, though the main characters' key personality traits are played for all their worth, with Superman always seeing the good in people and Batman pessimistically wary throughout. Loeb has drawn little sophistication into the characters but then this seems to be what Superman/Batman is all about. Like it or lump it.

Changing families, challenging futures 6th Australian Institute of Family Studies Conference Melbourne 25-27 November 1998 WORKING WITH MALE SOLE PARENTS Sharon Turner, Peter Monk and Bala Mudaly Springvale Community Health Service ABSTRACT As the incidence of male sole parents increase it is not uncommon for professionals to be faced with requests for counselling and parenting support for men who are sole parents. Issues and challenges that face single fathers are many and varied, including cultural aspects, gender issues, age, and personal factors such as the capacity as a father to be there for the child. Children may also present with special needs. Many issues which need to be addressed when working with male sole parents are not dissimilar to those experienced by single mothers. However, there are salient issues which appear far more unique to the sole father population. These are the lack of support for male sole parents and the father's self concept. This also has relevance to the current interest generated in men's health, and changes in gender roles. Using case examples, these and other pertinent issues and outcomes for supporting men who are sole parents will be illustrated. INTRODUCTION Today I would like to discuss some of the clinical work with male sole parents that has been done within a community health setting.
