    Sieve Methods in Combinatorics

Coauthors: Yu-Ru Liu We will present a combinatorial analogue of a sieve method originating in a 1934 paper of Paul Turan which we call the Turan sieve. The advantage of the Turan sieve is that it is "Mobius function free". Thus, in a combinatorial setting, this sieve method has wider applications and we explore some of these, such as getting good estimates for the number of proper colorings of the vertices of a graph. A mathematician is a device for turning coffee into theorems. Paul Erdos Reportedly, this led a rival mathematician to remark "If so, we can deduce that Erdos drinks exceptionally weak coffee." Update A reader writes: The quote "A mathematician is a device for turning coffee into theorems" is usually mis-attributed to Erdos, and should be attributed to Alfred Renyi instead. And the follow-up I've always heard, attributed to the mathematician Paul Turan, is that "Weak coffee is fit only for lemmas." Second update Another reader points out that a programmer is a device for turning pizza into code. News to me; I'd always heard that Orange Crush was the precursor chemical for code. Most E-mailed An emotional farewell to Mexico's Roy Rogers A warning sent but left unheeded Marvel to make movies based on comic books By Kenneth Turan, Times Staff Writer Literally and metaphorically, "Collateral" peers deeply and persuasively into darkness. Skillfully directed by Michael Mann and featuring strong work by Jamie Foxx as a night-shift cabdriver and Tom Cruise as his all-night passenger, this sharp and exciting thriller examines the vast disconnected physical blackness that is Los Angeles at night as well as the murkier aspects of its characters' souls. Mann's first theatrical feature, 1981's "Thief," was a crime story, and though the director has gone on to work in a wide spectrum ("The Insider," "Ali," "The Last of the Mohicans"), he's retained an affinity for the genre. In films like "Heat," "Manhunter" and now "Collateral," he's been especially good at depicting driven outsiders who are swallowed whole by their professions, case-hardened types on both sides of the law who take pride in what they do and demand to be respected for it.

Welcome to Bank TuranAlem Bank TuranAlem is one of the fastest growing full financial service companies in Kazakhstan and is expanding its operations to neighboring countries. The BTA Corporate Family consists of the second largest commercial bank in Kazakhstan, an outstanding brokerage firm in TuranAlem Securities, three leading insurance companies, two sound pension fund companies, an asset management company, an industry leading company in the asset leasing business, a rapidly growing mortgage company and a number of other entities providing support services. The Bank has a proud history dating back to 1925 when Turan Bank was founded as the Kazakh branch of Promstroibank (the industrial sector bank of the former Soviet Union). Turan provided financing and banking services to a large part of Kazakhstan's industrial sector and its customers represented many of Kazakhstan's leading industrial enterprises. Major projects financed included the Turkestan-Siberia railway, the Balkhash copper smelting complex and the Pavlodar oil refinery. Following independence, Alem Bank was founded in 1991 and acted as the agent of the Government in raising international financing under sovereign guarantees. It replaced the Kazakh branch of the Vnesheconombank of the Soviet Union. Alem Bank was considered one of the leading financial institutions in Kazakhstan and was one of the first banks in the country to undertake international transactions. Alem Bank was the first bank to participate in interbank payment system such as Swift and the first to join both the VISA and MasterCard networks.

In 1934, Paul Turan gave an elementary proof of the famous theorem of Hardy and Ramanujan. From this proof, a method was developed to assist in the analysis of the normal order of sequences. A consequence of this method is the Turan Sieve. In this talk, I will introduce you to elementary sieve theory, and two different developments of the Turan Sieve, and demonstrate some examples of its usefulness, as well as some its disadvantages.
Familiarity with elementary analytic number theory will be useful, but is not required.
