Born: 1474, Hackforth, Yorkshire, England Died: 18 Nov 1559, Lambeth Palace, London, Middlesex, England Father: Thomas TUNSTALL of Thurland Castle Mother: Eleanor CONYERS Bishop of London, later of Durham. Brother of Brian Tunstall (killed 1513 at the battle of Flodden Field and immortalized at the " shining knight " in Canto 6 of Sir Walter Scott's " Marmion "). He studied both at Oxford and Cambridge, finally graduating LL.D. at Padua. Tunstall was a learned man, a language scholar of some ability himself, and he had declared his affection for some of Erasmus ’s reform oriented ideas. Being an accomplished scholar both in theology and law, as well as in Greek and Hebrew, he soon won the friendship of Archbishop Warham , who on 25 Aug 1511, made him his chancellor, and shortly after rector of Harrow-on-the-Hill. He became successively a canon of Lincoln (1514) and archdeacon of Chester (1515). He began his diplomatic career as Ambassador at Brussels, in conjunction with Sir Thomas More , and there he lodged with Erasmus , becoming the intimate friend of both of them. Further preferments and embassies fell to his lot, till in 1522 he was appointed Bishop of London by papal provision. On 25 May 1523, he became keeper of the privy seal; but neither the work this entailed nor fresh embassies prevented him from making a visitation of his diocese. A visit to Worms (1520-1) had opened his eyes to the dangers of the Lutheran movement and the evils arising from heretical literature. In the divorce question

Catholic World Report, November 2000 more direct.) Cuthbert Tunstall found that argument compelling. He decided not to oppose the king, and he lived to a ripe old age. As it happens, this story has a happier ending. Later in life Bishop Tunstall regained his courage, and he did dare to oppose Queen Elizabeth I. He might well have become a martyr on the second go-round, but he died of natural causes before Elizabeth caught up with him.
What I do not understand is the comparative ease with which American political leaders today convince Catholic bishops to mute their public criticism of immoral public policies. Many years have passed since a British bishop faced an executioner, and the American hierarchy has never had to cope with that sort of unpleasantness. Yet our shepherds knuckle under to political pressure with an alacrity that would make the young Cuthbert Tunstall blush. Now let me offer another example. Recently that indispensable newspaper

Annual report of the Library Committee for 2002
    Accessions of printed books:
De arte supputandi , Cuthbert Tunstall
A laconic entry in the Lambeth parish register dated 29th November 1559 records that ‘Cutbert Tunstall a popish byshop was buryed’. Cuthbert Tunstall had died a short step away at Lambeth Palace, where he had begun his career as Chancellor to Archbishop Warham, and where he spent his last months in confinement in the custody of Archbishop Parker.
At the sale of the library of Elizabeth Armstrong at Bonham’s in April the Friends purchased an early work by Tunstall, De arte supputandi (Paris: Robert Estienne, 1529). Its subject is arithmetic, or the art of reckoning. It was originally published in London in 1522, and was the first book wholly on arithmetic to be published in England. However it had greater impact abroad. In France Rabelais chose Tunstall as the standard by which to measure Gargantua’s wonderful proficiency in arithmetic. Our copy is the rare first continental edition, elegantly produced by the Estienne press. In a dedication to his close friend Thomas More, Tunstall explained that he had been led to master the art of ready reckoning for his public duties. More, who was then responsible for examining accounts in the King’s treasury, would find the book useful, and he could pass it on to his children for their education. The De arte supputandi was polished for the press following Tunstall’s nomination to the see of London, a deliberate clearing of the decks before turning to religious duties. Written in stylish classical Latin it had an immediate appeal to the humanist circles in which he moved. His friend Erasmus, in presenting a copy to the Secretary of the King of Poland, wrote, ‘I send you … a book … by Cuthbert Tunstall, Bishop of London …, a man of most blameless life, steeped in both literatures, not ignorant of any honest learning. For I know you will rejoice when you shall see that sort of bishop becoming day by day more numerous’. Our copy has the ownership inscription of Thomas Hylles (also latinized as Thomas Colles), and is replete with his neat marginalia in Latin and English. His notes display an extensive knowledge of the mathematical literature of the day, and he may possibly be identified as the author Thomas Hill (fl. 1590), whose writings included

    Sir Thomas More
One of William Tyndale’s bitterest opponents, and one of the best-known men in 16th-century England for his power, his intellect and his religious convictions. His was the central character in the prize-winning play and movie, A Man for All Seasons Thomas More was born in London, 6 February 1478, the son of a judge. He was sent to Oxford for two years, then studied law and was called to the Bar in 1501. He spent four years at the London Charterhouse (monastery of the Carthusian monks), hoping to become a priest or monk or friar. Leaving the Charterhouse, he entered Parliament. His friends included Desiderius Erasmus and John Colet, and other scholars who desired moderate reforms in the Church but were set against any break with the Papacy. Henry VIII, who became king in 1509, recognized More's learning and integrity, enjoyed his intelligent and cheerful conversation and ready wit, became his friend, and appointed him to numerous public offices, including finally that of Lord Chancellor of England. More was commissioned by the king and the church to refute William Tyndale’s arguments and to discredit his character. He wrote nine books against Tyndale, filling more than 1,000 pages with arguments and invective against the reformer, and always defending the ultimate authority of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. More undertook to show that Tyndale's translation of the Scriptures was so full of errors that it deserved to be suppressed. More and Tyndale exchanged several broadsides. Tyndale's denunciations of the doctrines taught by Rome would have fallen on deaf ears if they had not in fact described doctrines that many men believed they had heard from the pulpit, and had found utterly unacceptable.
