Statistician John W. Tukey dies
PRINCETON, N.J. John Wilder Tukey, an emeritus Princeton professor considered to be one of the most important contributors to modern statistics, died Wednesday. He was 85. Tukey developed many important tools of modern statistics and introduced concepts that were central to the creation of today's telecommunications technologies. In addition to his formidable research achievements, Tukey was known for his penchant for coining terms that reflected new ideas and techniques in the sciences and is credited with introducing the computer science terms "bit" (short for binary digit) and "software." "He probably made more original contributions to statistics than anyone else since World War II," said Frederick Mosteller, retired professor of mathematical statistics at Harvard University. "I believe that the whole country scientifically, industrially, financially is better off because of him and bears evidence of his influence," said retired Princeton Professor John A. Wheeler, who is a major figure in the history of physics and the development of the atomic bomb.

¨ nato il 16 giugno 1915 a New Bedford, Massachusetts
e mor¬ il 26 luglio 2000 a New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Math Makes Points: John Tukey
John W. Tukey John Tukey is a pioneer in exploratory data analysis. Whenever we take samples of a product or of public opinion, we amass a collection of data points. If there are only two numbers that describe each observation, like the height and weight of students in a class, then that information can be plotted on a graph and we can see if the points "cluster" to reveal some relationship between the two quantities. But in the census data for a large city there may be many different numbers that describe each observation, three or four or more. John Tukey and his colleagues studied the "point clouds" that arise in such situations and manipulated them on a computer screen until patterns emerged that indicated relationships among different variables. To this day, one of the most significant uses of scientific visualization is in the analysis of such patterns in statistical data. Software for rotating point clouds has been developed by Data Description Inc. A site on Exploratory Data Analysis covers many aspects of the topic, as does the

BIOGRAPHY 15.1 John W. Tukey
John Wilder Tukey was born in New Bedford, a fishing town on the southern coast of Massachusetts. His father was a high school Latin teacher. His mother was trained as a teacher as well, but was denied employment because her spouse was already employed. So she started a private tutoring business and made John her prize pupil instead of sending him to public school where, she thought, "he would only get lazy." Eventually, John graduated from nearby Brown University with a degree in chemistry, followed by a graduate degree in mathematics from Princeton. Indeed, he spent most of his life at Princeton, where he founded the university's Statistics Department and taught for decades. John Tukey soon became one of the most influential statisticians of the late 20th century. Much of his work involved robust analysis , which allows researchers to reach credible conclusions even when their data are flawed. He also introduced new ways of presenting data clearly, including the
