John Wilder Tukey
was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, 16 June 1915, the only son of the two top 1898 graduates of Bates College. He obtained the B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemistry from Brown University and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Princeton University. In 1939 he began a teaching career at Princeton which has continued to this day. Beginning as an instructor in Mathematics, he became Professor of Mathematics, Chairman of the Department of Statistics, and is now Professor of Statistics and Donner Professor of Science. Throughout World War II, Tukey participated in projects assigned to Princeton's Fire Control Research Office. This was the beginning of an intense career of public service in fields as diverse as disarmament, the environment, education, health, information retrieval, and statistics. He was a member of Brown University's Board of Fellows. He joined the technical staff at Bell Laboratories in 1945 and is now the Associate Executive Director, Information Sciences Division.

JOHN TUKEY
John Wilder Tukey was born on 16 June 1915 in Massachusetts, U.S.A. He attended Brown University until 1937 and then obtained a PhD in mathematics at Princeton University. During World War II he worked on statistical problems associated with weapons development (such as the accuracy of range finders on bombers). After the was he researched at Princeton and with Bell Labs, concentrating on the study of complex data. He is largely responsible for the development of Exploratory Data Analysis, although his contributions are found in many areas of statistics. Examples of his collected papers include: The Collected Works of John W. Tukey : Multiple Comparisons 1948-1983 by John W. Tukey, Henry I. Braun (Editor). Configural Polysampling : A Route to Practical Robustness (Wiley Series in Probability and Mathematical Statistics. Probability in Mathematical Stati) by Stephan Morgenthaler, John W. Tukey (Editor). Obituary: John Wilder Tukey John Wilder Tukey, one of the most influential statisticians of the last 50 years, died on July 26. He was 85. Well known to Statisticians, Tukey's specific contributions include the Box-and-Whisker Plot, the Stem-and-Leaf Diagram, and Tukey's Paired Comparisons. He also coined the terms "bit" and "software". In a 1958 article in American mathematical monthly, Tukey saw that "software", as he called it, was gaining prominence. "Today", he wrote at the time, it is "at least as important as the 'hardware' of tubes, transistors, wires, tapes and the like." Tukey was also the recipient of many awards in his field. These include the National Academy of Sciences in 1961, the National Medal of Science from President Nixon in 1973, and the Medal of Honor from IEEE in 1982.

John Tukey 's parents, Ralph H Tukey and Adah M Tukey, recognised that John had great potential while he was still only a child, so they arranged for him to be educated at home rather than in school. This was possible since his parents were themselves secondary school teachers who were trained in classics. In fact it was John's mother Adah who undertook most of the teaching of her son since, as a married woman, she was prohibited from working as a full-time teacher in Massachusetts at that time. It was an education which greatly influenced John throughout his life [17]:- Their educational method was to respond to John's queries by providing clues and asking further questions rather than giving a direct answer, a characteristic that John inherited and used throughout his career. John also had the benefit of an excellent public library in New Bedford which even possessed journals such as the Journal of the American Chemical Society and the Transactions of the American Mathematical Society.

"An appropriate answer to the right problem is worth a good deal more than an exact answer to an approximate problem." John Tukey
As a chemist-turned-topologist-turned statistician, John Wilder Tukey played a key role in the development and study of statistics in the mid 1900's. The field of statistics has benefited tremendously from his contributions. J. W. Tukey was born on July 16, 1915, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was the only child of Ralph H. and Adah M. (Tasker) Tukey. His parents recognized the great potential in their son at a very early age and decided to school him at home. Home schooling was convenient for Tukey since both of his parents were teachers. Tukey's formal education did not begin until he entered Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, to study mathematics and chemistry. Tukey complete his studies at Brown University when he graduated with a Master's degree in chemistry. He then went on to study for a doctorate in mathematics at Princeton University in 1937. Tukey received his doctorate in 1939 for the dissertation Denumerability in topology . This impressive thesis was then published in 1940 as Convergence and Uniformity in topology . It was the second book in the Annals of Mathematics Studies of the Princeton University Press. However, this was not Tukey's first publication. Even prior to obtaining his doctorate, he wrote three papers that had been published.

John Tukey , 85, Statistician; Coined the Word 'Software'
By DAVID LEONHARDT John Wilder Tukey , one of the most influential statisticians of the last 50 years and a wide-ranging thinker credited with inventing the word ''software,'' died on Wednesday in New Brunswick, N.J. He was 85. The cause was a heart attack after a short illness, said Phyllis Anscombe, his sister-in-law.
Mr. Tukey But Mr. Tukey frequently ventured outside of the academy as well, working as a consultant to the government and corporations and taking part in social debates. In the 1950's, he criticized Alfred C. Kinsey's research on sexual behavior. In the 1970's, he was chairman of a research committee that warned that aerosol spray cans damaged the ozone layer. More recently, he recommended that the 1990 Census be adjusted by using statistical formulas in order to count poor urban residents whom he believed it had missed. ''The best thing about being a statistician,'' Mr. Tukey once told a colleague, ''is that you get to play in everyone's backyard.'' An intense man who liked to argue and was fond of helping other researchers, Mr.
