University of Wisconsin - Madison Whewell, William (b Lancaster, England, 24 May 1794; d Cambridge, England, 6 March 1866) Born the eldest son of a carpenter, William Whewell rose to become Master of Trinity College, Cambridge and a central figure in Victorian science. After attending the grammar school at Heversham in Westmorland, Whewell entered Trinity College, Cambridge and graduated Second Wrangler. He became a Fellow of the College in 1817, took his M.A. degree in 1819, and his D.D. degree in 1844. By the first quarter of the nineteenth century, French mathematicians, led by Pierre-Simon de Laplace and Joseph Lagrange, had established a supremacy over British mathematicians in applying analytical methods to Newtonian physics. Fourier on heat, Ampere on electromagnetism, and Fresnel on light represent only a few of the triumphs of French mathematical physics. In 1819, the year Whewell helped form the Cambridge Philosophical Society, he also published his first textbook, An Elementary Treatise on Mechanics . It was the first English text on applied mathematics that consistently used continental symbolism and became the standard text used by undergraduates at Cambridge. Along with his second textbook

Euclid's Fourteenth Book
When a famous mathematician has something new to say, the whole world pays attention. Euclid's Elements, which presented the state of the art in geometry around 300 B.C., has been extraordinarily influential. This massive, 13-volume compendium set the standard for precise mathematical exposition and discourse for many centuries. More than 2,000 editions have been published, and new, interactive versions now appear on the World Wide Web. But that's not all. Now there exists compelling evidence that Euclid had a fourteenth book in mind. Officials of the Foundation for Old Occidental Languages announced today that, after a year devoted to authentication and analysis, they are prepared to release the text of a manuscript that appears to be a Latin translation of research notes jotted down by Euclid in preparation for writing a fourteenth volume of Elements "This is truly an astonishing document," says Duncan D. Umber of St. Patrick's College of Medieval Studies, who examined the manuscript last month. "Euclid went much farther in his investigations than anyone had previously suspected. "People continually underestimate what the ancients were able to do," he adds. "We will need to reassess Greek mathematics in its entirety."

It is a general fact that undergraduate students do not really understand calculus until they've taken analysis. In the same way, one could make the case that students do not really understand college algebra until they've seen a general treatment of the theory of numbers, analysis, and some abstract algebra. In a college algebra course, how much understanding do we expect? For example, if we want students to know that x + y = y + x where x and y are real numbers, would we really prove it using converging sequences of rational numbers? Professor Goodman does in his book, Algebra From A to Z , Volumes 1-5. This is not an isolated example, but does give the flavor of the text. This sequence of booklets (which I'm referring to collectively as a book) reminds me of a problem that faces many parents. Suppose your 5 year old asks you, "Why is the sky blue?". We could either say, "because it is", or we could go into a lengthy discussion of the chemical composition of the sky, and perhaps throw some physics in for good measure. Of course, most people would do the former, simply because the child is (probably) not ready for the real reason. In the same way, if a college algebra student asks you why x + y = y + x, how would you respond? My problem with this book is not with its mathematics, or with its text (which is written in a conversational style), but with the book's audience- Who exactly will be reading this book? It is stated in the preface that this book is intended for a student that has some algebra, but "does not really understand what is going on". So again I would ask the author exactly what level of understanding can we reasonably expect from a novice? Sometimes I think we, as mature mathematicians, forget that it took us years of training and a love of the abstract to even begin to understand the complexities of what we took for granted in our youth (i.e., arithmetic). I would allow students at the College Algebra level to be more or less procedural (although I may be in the minority with that opinion), and let their minds evolve a little before going into abstraction and subtlety that demands a level of maturity and experience that most algebra students do not have.

This article is not about George Boolos , another mathematical logician. George Boole November 2 December 8 ) was a mathematician and philosopher As the inventor of Boolean algebra , the basis of all modern computer arithmetic, Boole is regarded as one of the founders of the field of computer science His father was a tradesman of limited means, but of studious character and active mind. Being especially interested in mathematical science , the father gave his son his first lessons; but the extraordinary mathematical powers of George Boole did not manifest themselves in early life. At first his favourite subject was classics. Not until the age of seventeen did he attack the higher mathematics, and his progress was much retarded by the want of efficient help. When about sixteen years of age he became assistant-master in a private school at Doncaster , and he maintained himself to the end of his life in one grade or other of the scholastic profession. Few distinguished men, indeed, have had a less eventful life. Almost the only changes which can be called events are his successful establishment of a school at Lincoln , its removal to Waddington, his appointment in 1849 as professor of mathematics in the Queen's College, Cork

Research Interests
I work on the theory of computation. My current obsession is with the computational complexity of higher-type operators and functionals and with the applications of this theory to problems in programming languages and in computational learning theory. (Yes, these things do connnect, although how well remains to be seeen.) I am also interested in structural computational complexity theory (particularly the structure of complete degrees and one-way functions), biological computing, and the misty borderlands between the intensional and the extensional. There is nothing as practical as a good theory. - David Hilbert

This huge dataset depicts the descent from Christopher Todd (1637-1919), being an effort to give an account, as full as possible of his descendants in America. Tod is the Scotch word for fox. In Scotland and the north of England a todhunter is a fox hunter. The name Todd is an altered form of the Scotch word tod. The shorter form of the name is therefore the original and correct one. The doubling of the final letter is a corruption. But at the present time everywhere unless in Scotland and perhaps even there too, the corrupt form is the more common one. The first to assume the word as a surname was perhaps a keen sportsman. He followed the hounds, or may have been a fox hunter. Tod is a name occurring in the writings of Wycliffe, also Todman. We have other forms of the name, Todt or Todte and Todde, also the compounds Todcastle, Todenham and Todlebru. A good story is told of a market gardener of Middlesex, who was brought before a magistrate for not having printed on his cart his name, his place of residence and the words "taxed cart." In defence, the gardener said that he had complied with the law in every particular, as the Court could judge from inspection of his cart, upon which was the following legend:
